You can configure MediaMTX to start automatically with Linux and forward a published stream to YouTube over RTMPS. The setup has three parts: install MediaMTX and its configuration in stable locations, enable a systemd unit that waits for network readiness, and add YouTube’s current ingest URL and stream key to the MediaMTX path that receives your source. The basic unit starts at boot; by itself, it does not provide crash recovery or guarantee uninterrupted YouTube delivery.
What this setup does—and what it does not
MediaMTX is a live media server and proxy that can forward streams to other servers. A systemd service can launch it when Linux boots, while MediaMTX’s forwarding configuration sends an incoming stream to YouTube. Your source still needs to publish to the MediaMTX path you configure.

The documented Linux boot instructions cover systemd-based distributions such as Ubuntu and Debian, but explicitly do not apply to OpenWrt. Check your distribution’s conventions and the instructions for the MediaMTX version you install. MediaMTX describes itself as a zero-dependency live media server and proxy in its introduction.
Boot startup, network readiness ordering, process restart behavior, and successful YouTube delivery are separate concerns. The documented sample unit handles boot startup and network ordering, but contains no Restart= directive. It does not establish continuous forwarding through a crash, network interruption, or YouTube-side interruption.

Install MediaMTX in stable locations
The MediaMTX Linux instructions use /usr/local/bin/mediamtx for the executable, /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml for the configuration, and /etc/systemd/system/mediamtx.service for the service unit. Install or move the files accordingly, or adapt every path consistently if your system uses different locations. The official MediaMTX start-on-boot instructions show the baseline procedure.
Configure forwarding to YouTube
Get the current RTMPS URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
- Use the lock icon to find the RTMPS URL, then copy the stream key from the same control room. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe obtaining these values.
- Use the current URL shown for your stream instead of treating an example hostname in MediaMTX documentation as permanent. YouTube says RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; use
rtmpsfor both the URL protocol and server.
Keep the key private. Do not include a real key in a public configuration example, screenshot, repository, or log. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Add the destination under the receiving path
In /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml, configure forwarding under the path where your source publishes. The following illustrates the structure; replace the example path, ingest URL, and key with your actual values:

MediaMTX’s page includes an example ingest hostname, but says to check YouTube for the current URL. Its example certificate fingerprint is not a general-purpose value to copy; verify certificate details for the specific endpoint instead.
Make sure the outgoing stream has audio and video
The forwarded stream must contain both a video track and an audio track. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Even if the intended program is silent, ensure the outgoing stream contains an audio track.
Create and enable the systemd service
Write the unit file
Create /etc/systemd/system/mediamtx.service with the documented baseline structure:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetAfter=network-online.target orders service startup after the network-online target, while Wants=network-online.target pulls in that target. These directives express ordering and a dependency; they do not prove that a usable internet connection or YouTube ingest is available at every moment.

The MediaMTX instructions advise enabling the distribution’s wait-online service so startup waits for network initialization. They mention systemd-networkd-wait-online.service; the correct implementation depends on your network stack, and that exact service may not exist on your system. Check which network manager you use and verify the corresponding wait-online unit before enabling it.
Reload systemd, enable the service, and start it
- Reload unit definitions after creating or changing the unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable MediaMTX for boot:
sudo systemctl enable mediamtx. - Start it now:
sudo systemctl start mediamtx.
These are the commands in the project’s boot-start procedure. Enabling a service configures it to start at boot; starting it launches it in the current session.

Verify the configuration and delivery
- Check that the service is enabled and active with
systemctl status mediamtx. - Confirm the service is loading the intended configuration file and that MediaMTX reports no configuration or startup errors.
- Confirm the source publishes to the path named under
pathsin the forwarding configuration. - Check that the destination uses the current RTMPS URL and the correct, private stream key.
- Confirm YouTube receives both audio and video.
- After a reboot, check that the service starts and that the source-to-YouTube path becomes live again.
The current MediaMTX configuration reference identifies itself as version v1.21.1 and shows logDestinations: [stdout] as the default. With a systemd service, stdout is a useful place to inspect service output; exact journal behavior depends on the operating system’s systemd setup. Consult the configuration reference for the version you have installed, since the reference can change.
What is needed for more resilience than boot startup
The sample unit does not specify a restart policy, health monitoring, an uptime guarantee, or a YouTube reconnection policy. If you add systemd restart behavior or monitoring, check the relevant systemd semantics and test the result in your environment. A process restart policy can address some process exits, but it does not by itself prove that the source is publishing, that network service is available, or that YouTube is accepting the stream.
YouTube account eligibility, duration limits, and policy conditions for continuous streams are not established by the setup instructions cited here. Check YouTube’s current requirements for your account and content before relying on an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures
The service does not start at boot
- Check
systemctl is-enabled mediamtxand enable it withsudo systemctl enable mediamtxif needed. - Check
systemctl status mediamtxfor unit errors, then verify that the executable and configuration exist at the exact paths inExecStart. - After editing the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadbefore restarting the service.
MediaMTX starts, but YouTube does not go live
- Verify that the source is publishing to the same MediaMTX path configured for forwarding.
- Re-copy the current RTMPS destination and key from YouTube Live Control Room; do not rely on a documentation example hostname.
- Confirm the destination uses RTMPS and that the key has not been mistyped, replaced, or exposed.
- Check that both video and audio tracks reach MediaMTX and are included in the forwarded stream.
The service starts before the network is usable
- Confirm that the relevant network-online target is configured for your network manager.
- Verify the appropriate wait-online service exists and is enabled; the networkd-specific service is not universal.
- Remember that network ordering at boot is not a guarantee against later connectivity loss.
The stream stops after MediaMTX exits or YouTube disconnects
The documented unit has no Restart= setting and the cited instructions do not establish end-to-end reconnection behavior. Inspect the service output and determine whether the failure is a MediaMTX exit, a missing source, a network problem, or a YouTube-side disconnect before choosing a restart or monitoring approach.
