Nginx RTMP YouTube Stream Dropping Frames on a Low-Cost VPS: How to Diagnose and Fix It

A YouTube stream-health warning does not identify the failing component. Trace the stream from encoder to VPS relay to YouTube, then tune the measured bottleneck.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by finding where the stream first falls behind: the encoder, the VPS relay, the VPS’s outbound network, or YouTube ingestion. A YouTube “not receiving enough video” warning points to an ingestion problem, but it does not identify which hop caused it. Check FFmpeg output, VPS measurements and YouTube’s stream-health timeline together before changing settings or upgrading the server.

First, establish where the stream is falling behind

A common path is encoder → NGINX RTMP on a VPS → YouTube Live. The encoder might run on your own computer or on the VPS. That distinction changes the diagnosis: CPU pressure on the VPS is a plausible encoding bottleneck only if it is encoding or transcoding there. If it is forwarding an already encoded stream, measure relay and network behavior before blaming encoding load.

Record these details for the same period in which the problem occurs:

  • Input and output resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and target bitrate.
  • Where encoding happens, and whether FFmpeg is transcoding or copying/remuxing the incoming stream.
  • FFmpeg’s full log and progress output, VPS CPU use, load, memory pressure and actual outbound throughput.
  • The time and exact wording of messages in YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health panel.

These observations let you compare what reaches the VPS, what leaves it and what YouTube reports. A “not receiving enough video” warning is a symptom, not proof that NGINX, the VPS plan or YouTube itself is the cause. YouTube Help advises choosing a bitrate suitable for a reliable connection and testing with audio and movement representative of the real stream.

Work through the diagnosis in order

1. Check the encoder before changing the relay

If FFmpeg encodes or transcodes on the VPS, inspect its complete log and periodic progress output while the stream is dropping frames. Check whether it is keeping pace and whether its output reports duplicated or dropped frames. Read those messages in context: their meaning can depend on the FFmpeg build and command. An isolated -r option is not a universal dropped-frame detector or fix.

If encoding happens on another machine, inspect that encoder’s output too. A smooth source entering the VPS but a struggling encoder output points to a different problem than an encoder that is keeping pace while YouTube reports an unhealthy incoming stream.

2. Measure the VPS during a representative stream

Observe CPU use, system load, memory pressure and actual outbound throughput while the problem is happening—not only when the server is idle. VPS allocations and network conditions vary by provider, plan and region; a low-cost VPS is not automatically underpowered, and a plan label alone does not establish available capacity under your workload.

  • If FFmpeg is CPU-bound while encoding: test a lower resolution or frame rate, or a faster, less CPU-intensive encode preset. If that still does not leave enough headroom, consider moving encoding upstream.
  • If FFmpeg only forwards or copies the stream: do not start by changing an encoding preset. Compare inbound and outbound delivery and investigate host or network constraints instead.
  • If outbound capacity is unstable or insufficient: lower the video bitrate; if necessary, also reduce resolution or frame rate until the connection can sustain the stream.

These are diagnosis branches, not a finding about your particular server. No host metrics, provider allocation or reproduction test are available to identify a single cause or predict which change will work.

3. Separate NGINX handling from the network path

Compare the stream arriving at the VPS with the stream leaving it, then line up any change with FFmpeg output and YouTube’s health timeline. Check NGINX configuration syntax with nginx -t and review relevant application and host logs. NGINX’s general stream-session documentation can help explain session processing, but it does not establish a universal NGINX RTMP setting that fixes dropped frames. The RTMP module and its version also matter; do not assume a directive or counter exists without checking the installed module’s documentation.

RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP. That security recommendation does not show that using RTMP caused frame drops, or that switching protocols will resolve them.

4. Match the remedy to the first failing hop

What the measurements show Where to focus Next step
FFmpeg encoding on the VPS falls behind as CPU load rises Encoding capacity or complexity Try a faster preset or lower output resolution/frame rate; consider encoding upstream if the host still cannot keep pace.
FFmpeg keeps pace, but outbound throughput is unstable or inadequate VPS-to-YouTube network path Reduce bitrate and, if needed, resolution or frame rate; compare the resulting output with YouTube’s health timeline.
The source reaches the VPS smoothly, but the outgoing relay path does not Relay, host or network handling Check NGINX syntax and relevant logs, then compare inbound and outbound behavior during the same interval.
YouTube reports a configuration warning Encoder output settings Check codec, bitrate, CBR and keyframe cadence against YouTube’s current guidance.
YouTube reports insufficient incoming video, but local output appears healthy The complete path to YouTube ingestion Correlate the health timeline with outbound capacity and the stream’s actual bitrate; the warning alone does not identify the failing component.

Do not increase buffers or pay for a larger VPS as a first move unless measurements point to that limitation. A changed setting that is not tied to an observed bottleneck can obscure the original problem without fixing it.

Check the YouTube encoder settings against the stream

YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Bitrate guidance varies with codec, resolution and frame rate; the H.264 examples below are not universal targets for other codecs or formats.

H.264 output YouTube Help recommended bitrate YouTube Help minimum setting
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s listed H.264 settings, not a guarantee of stable ingest. Choose a bitrate your actual connection can sustain; YouTube Help recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. For audio, the page lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and, in its advanced settings, recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 Kbps. Consult YouTube’s current encoder page for its complete codec- and format-specific values, since platform guidance can change.

Do not change to RTMPS expecting a frame-rate fix: YouTube recommends it for secure ingestion, but that alone does not establish a cause or remedy for dropped frames.

Preflight with the real stream, not an idle server

  1. Run a test using audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help says to test before starting a live stream.
  2. Watch FFmpeg’s output and VPS measurements throughout the test, especially during the intervals when YouTube reports a health problem.
  3. Monitor YouTube stream health and review its messages while the test runs.
  4. Record the final bitrate, resolution, frame rate, encoder output, host measurements and YouTube health status. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell whether the observed bottleneck changed.

A video with little movement may not reveal the same issues as a motion-heavy stream. Use conditions that approximate the real event rather than treating an idle or unusually easy test as proof that the delivery path is reliable.

Copyright and looping-content checks

Frame delivery and content rights are separate concerns. Before sending a live stream, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio you plan to use, including music and other people’s material. A technically stable stream does not resolve a copyright issue. If you loop prerecorded material, review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies rather than assuming that a successful connection makes the content eligible for monetization. YouTube’s rules can change; check the policies that apply to your channel and content.
