A YouTube livestream is not automatically stopped just because it reaches 12 hours. YouTube’s documented 12-hour warnings concern whether the stream is archived and whether viewers can rewind—not a universal cutoff. If a MediaMTX-forwarded stream actually ends, check YouTube Live Control Room’s status and error details alongside MediaMTX’s logs before setting up a restart.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance actually means
YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. It also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Neither warning says every livestream is automatically terminated at that point. YouTube’s archive guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.”

These are separate concerns: the live broadcast may continue while the archive or rewind experience is affected. If your broadcast ended, its actual status and error details—not the duration alone—are the starting point for diagnosis.

Find out why the stream ended before automating a restart
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm whether the event is still live, ended, or showing a stream-health error. Note the error and the time it appeared. YouTube surfaces stream health and specific error messages there; its metrics page also shows duration and post-stream data. See YouTube’s live stream metrics guidance.
- Match the time against MediaMTX logs and configuration. Check what happened around the same time and confirm the intended path is being forwarded. Verify that the RTMPS destination and stream key are current values from the channel’s YouTube Studio. MediaMTX documents the forwarding format, but use YouTube Studio for your own current server URL and key. See MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding guide and YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
- Check that the stream has both audio and video. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams.
- Protect the stream key. Do not expose it in screenshots, public configuration examples, or logs shared publicly. If it has been exposed, replace it through your YouTube account’s stream settings.
- Check the event after it ends. YouTube Studio’s Live tab shows current and past streams. Check there and in analytics rather than assuming a particular archive or monetization outcome because the broadcast crossed—or restarted near—the 12-hour mark.
Choose what a restart should accomplish
Before wiring up automation, decide whether you want to resume the same scheduled event or start a fresh event. The correct approach depends on your YouTube stream-key and event workflow and on how MediaMTX is deployed. The documented guidance does not provide a universal command that safely rotates every YouTube session at 12 hours.

MediaMTX path hooks can run commands on stream lifecycle events, including availability or online/offline state. Some hooks have restart settings if a command exits. Those capabilities are building blocks, not proof that restarting a hook will create a new YouTube event, rotate a session correctly, or preserve your chosen event setup. Configure and verify the behavior for your own workflow before relying on it unattended. See MediaMTX’s configuration reference and its hooks documentation.
- Same event or fresh event: Decide which outcome you need; do not assume an encoder or hook restart makes that choice for you.
- Automatic or manual recovery: A hook can respond to a lifecycle event, but you still need to verify what happens in YouTube Studio when that event occurs. Manual monitoring avoids unverified automation but requires someone to respond.
- Continuous viewing or segmented records: A restart may interrupt viewing or produce a different event/archive arrangement. The cited documentation does not prescribe one choice for every channel.
Keep a local recording if the full archive matters
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup because a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind is a separate viewer feature and may also be limited or unavailable on longer streams. If a complete recording matters to your channel, do not rely on YouTube’s archive alone.
