For a playlist encoder sending a continuous stream to YouTube, choose RTMPS by default if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Use YouTube’s HLS ingest path only when you specifically need its supported codec or quality path and can meet its stricter playlist, segment, and HTTPS requirements.
First, distinguish sending a stream to YouTube from using SRS to generate HLS for viewers. Those are different workflows, and an HLS playlist produced by SRS for playback is not automatically a valid YouTube ingest feed.

Are you sending video to YouTube or serving it to viewers?
In this comparison, ingest means your encoder sends audio and video to YouTube. In YouTube’s ordinary encoder workflow, you copy a server URL and stream key into the encoder, then send the stream to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS for that connection; this is a recommendation, not a claim that plain RTMP is impossible. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the setup.

That SRS output workflow is not the same as YouTube HLS ingest. YouTube’s HLS ingest guide requires the encoder to upload its own compliant playlist and segments over HTTPS. Do not assume an SRS-generated viewer-facing .m3u8 can be sent directly to YouTube. SRS’s HLS documentation and YouTube’s HLS ingestion specification describe the separate paths.

RTMPS/RTMP vs. HLS ingest
| Decision point | RTMPS/RTMP ingest | HLS ingest |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Default for a continuous encoder-to-YouTube feed when supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS. | Use when an HLS-specific supported codec or quality path justifies the extra setup. |
| Latency | SRS identifies RTMP as a common ingest/production protocol. The supplied documentation does not establish a universal end-to-end latency figure for a particular playlist setup. | YouTube says HLS ingest usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingest because it is segment-based. |
| Connection and setup | Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder; prefer RTMPS. | Upload a media playlist and M2TS media segments over HTTPS, observing sequence and outstanding-segment rules. |
| Format | YouTube’s encoder recommendations include H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. | Requires muxed M2TS audio/video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and a rolling media playlist. YouTube’s HLS guide supports up to 60 fps. |
| Main operational trade-off | The familiar encoder path still needs stream-health monitoring and reconnection planning. | Short segments may lower latency, but can increase rebuffering risk and reduce encoding efficiency; playlist and HTTPS compliance add operational work. |
These are protocol and product-documentation distinctions, not results from a comparative stream test. YouTube’s current encoder settings guide and HLS ingestion guide provide the cited requirements and recommendations.
What YouTube HLS ingest requires
HLS ingest is not simply a matter of providing YouTube with an SRS playback URL. The encoder must upload a compliant rolling media playlist and media segments. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide specifies:

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
- Transport and segments: Upload over HTTPS. Media segments should last one to four seconds and must not exceed five seconds.
- Segment format: Use muxed M2TS audio and video, with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio.
- GOP and playlist: Use a closed GOP and a rolling media playlist. A playlist may contain no more than five outstanding segments.
- Frame rate: The guide supports up to 60 fps.
- Latency trade-off: YouTube says HLS ingest usually has higher latency than RTMP- or WebRTC-based ingest because it is segment-based. Shorter segments can reduce latency but may increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency.
These requirements differ from SRS’s HLS output configuration. SRS documents settings such as hls_fragment and hls_window, and newer SRS releases also document fMP4 support. Its documented HLS path describes H.264 with AAC/MP3, while YouTube’s HLS ingest specification calls for M2TS segments and AAC audio. SRS’s example tuning uses two-second fragments and a ten-second window; its guidance describes roughly six to eight seconds as achievable in its HLS tuning context and warns that too little buffering can cause playback failures. Those figures are SRS guidance for its HLS delivery context—not a guarantee for YouTube ingest or end-to-end viewer latency. SRS also says its documented page does not currently support HLS adaptive-bitrate generation. YouTube transcodes for viewer resolutions, so its HLS ingest guide says to send one encoded stream at the highest desired resolution rather than a master playlist of variants.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfigure a 24/7 playlist encoder for YouTube
For most playlist-based continuous streams, use the regular YouTube encoder workflow and RTMPS when available. The exact control names vary by encoder; the protocol choice does not remove the need to configure the source, keep the process running, or monitor the feed.

- Prepare the playlist. Confirm that you have the rights to stream every recording, and make the playlist’s video and audio formats and timestamps consistent. A playlist loop does not itself resolve copyright or YouTube monetization eligibility.
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to obtain the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Set the encoder’s ingest destination. Paste in the YouTube server URL and stream key, selecting RTMPS if the encoder offers it. Do not substitute an SRS viewer-facing HLS URL for YouTube’s ingest destination.
- Set the output format and rate control. YouTube’s encoder recommendations include H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). Select a resolution and bitrate appropriate to the source and the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings guide; the evidence here does not establish one bitrate that suits every resolution or connection.
- Set keyframes. Use a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube’s recommendation, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Test before relying on the loop. YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the live content. Check the preview and Live Control Room flow where applicable, and watch stream health and warning messages while the encoder is sending.
- Plan for process and connection failures. A long-running playlist needs an operational plan for restarting the encoder or reconnecting after an interruption. Supervision and reconnection behavior depend on the encoder and host; the documentation cited here does not establish that a particular playlist setup is guaranteed to run without interruption.
What “24/7” means for YouTube archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance does not guarantee that one live event can remain uninterrupted for 24 hours or longer, nor does it establish an uptime guarantee. If you need a continuous channel, distinguish the ongoing broadcast from the archive behavior and verify your channel’s live setup and stream health rather than assuming an archive statement proves 24/7 continuity. YouTube’s encoder guide documents the under-12-hour archive statement.
Can SRS host the encoder?
SRS is not required just because the source is a playlist. Its project documentation shows an FFmpeg publishing workflow and lists Linux and macOS support, so a suitable existing machine can host software for a do-it-yourself setup. An always-on mini PC is optional local hardware, not an established requirement. A VPS or dedicated server is another category-level option if you do not want to leave a computer at home running; the sources cited here do not establish a particular provider as best. See the SRS project README for its documented workflow.

If you choose SRS for an HLS workflow, configure and validate it for the role you actually need. SRS HLS output to viewers and YouTube HLS ingest are not interchangeable: YouTube ingest requires its own HTTPS upload behavior and M2TS, playlist, segment, and codec rules.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the encoder uses the server URL and current stream key from YouTube Studio, and that the selected ingest mode matches the encoder. Keep the key private.
- The encoder is sending HLS, but YouTube does not accept it: Confirm that this is a YouTube HLS ingest implementation—not merely an SRS-generated HLS playback URL—and check HTTPS uploads, M2TS segments, codecs, closed GOP, rolling playlist, segment lengths, and the outstanding-segment limit against YouTube’s specification.
- HLS playback buffers or fails after tuning: Review fragment and window settings in their intended SRS delivery context. SRS warns that reducing buffering too far can cause playback failures; its tuning figures are not a promise of YouTube ingest or viewer latency.
- The stream stops when a home computer or connection fails: A local encoder depends on that host and connection staying available. Use process supervision and reconnection where appropriate, or choose a cloud-hosted approach if keeping local equipment on is the problem.
- The playlist runs, but the archive or continuity expectation is wrong: Under-12-hour automatic archiving is not a guarantee of a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. Plan the live operation separately from archive expectations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an SRS-generated .m3u8 work as YouTube HLS ingest?
Not by assumption. SRS viewer-facing HLS output and YouTube’s HTTPS-upload HLS ingest are different workflows with different requirements.
Does using RTMPS guarantee a 24/7 stream?
No. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ingest connection, not an uptime guarantee; the encoder, host, network, and monitoring plan still matter.
Can I use HLS for a 60 fps YouTube ingest?
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide supports up to 60 fps, subject to its other format and playlist requirements.
