Nginx RTMP Alternatives for Streaming Pre-Recorded Videos to YouTube

If you want a pre-recorded video to appear as a YouTube live broadcast without operating NGINX RTMP, choose a hosted scheduled-playback service. StreamNeo is the first option to consider for a YouTube stream that should keep running: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live from the cloud. Castr, StreamYard, and Restream also document scheduled prerecorded workflows, with different limits and presentation features. If you want to keep an encoder-based setup, YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest.

Which NGINX RTMP alternative fits your workflow?

These options are not interchangeable. A hosted playback service accepts recorded video and handles scheduled playout; an encoder workflow sends a live feed to YouTube and leaves configuration and process management to you. The table compares the documented workflows, not independent reliability or overall service quality.

StreamNeo Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops from the cloud. Always-on YouTube streaming from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day free. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots.
Castr Upload an MP4, then schedule a one-time or looping broadcast to YouTube and other destinations. Its product page describes cloud playback without a local encoder; infinite looping is described for Premium and higher. Confirm current plan limits for storage, playlist size, concurrent streams, duration, destinations, and looping.
StreamYard Upload or select a recording, choose destinations and a time, and let the scheduled video start and end automatically. Automatic prerecorded mode has plan-dependent duration, upload-size, and scheduling limits. It requires MP4 with H.264 video; the help article specifies paid-plan output up to 1080p and a 10 Mbps upload bitrate ceiling. Automatic mode does not support studio overlays or showing comments on-stream, and the video is no longer automatically saved to the StreamYard library.
Restream Upload & Stream Upload or import a recording, schedule it as a live event, and use a single file or playlist. Its help article describes looping a scheduled video up to 10 times and real-time chat. Check current plan availability, file and playlist constraints, destinations, and whether its event workflow fits your use.
YouTube ingest with an encoder Send an encoder output to YouTube using a supported ingest protocol. Retains a self-managed encoder pipeline; RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection. Choose a compatible protocol and configure the encoder, endpoint, stream key, and latency expectations.

Vendor documentation describes advertised workflows, not independently measured performance. Plan limits and features can change, so verify current terms with the provider before committing.

When to use a managed prerecorded-streaming service

Choose hosted playback when the source is a finished recording and the main job is to have it start at a selected time, run without a local encoder, or repeat as a stream. Each provider has its own workflow:

StreamYard for scheduled recordings with defined presentation limits

StreamYard’s help article says a scheduled prerecorded stream starts at the selected time and ends when the video finishes. It specifies MP4 with H.264 video, paid-plan output up to 1080p, a 10 Mbps upload bitrate ceiling, and plan-dependent duration, upload-size, and simultaneous scheduling limits. Automatic prerecorded mode does not support studio overlays or showing comments on-stream, and these streams are no longer automatically saved to the StreamYard library. Restream for scheduled files and playlists

Restream Upload & Stream documents uploading a recording to Restream storage or importing it through Descript, Google Drive, or Dropbox, then scheduling it as a live event. It supports a single video or a playlist and describes looping a scheduled video up to 10 times. Confirm current plan availability, file and playlist constraints, and destination limits; the documented workflow does not establish every plan entitlement.

When to keep an encoder workflow

Use an encoder-based setup if you specifically need to produce or control the outgoing live feed yourself rather than schedule file playback in a hosted service. It preserves control over the encoder pipeline, but you remain responsible for the encoder process, its configuration, and stream-key handling. YouTube supports four third-party ingest protocols: RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH.

Choose an ingest protocol

  • RTMP: YouTube describes it as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency.
  • RTMPS: RTMP carried over an SSL connection. YouTube describes it as encrypted and suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency.
  • HLS: Supports H.264 and HEVC. YouTube describes HLS as better suited to 4K or other high-resolution use cases than ultra-low-latency delivery; segment-based delivery typically has greater latency than RTMP.
  • DASH: Supports H.264 and VP9. Like HLS, YouTube describes DASH as suited to high-resolution use cases rather than ultra-low latency, with greater typical latency from segment-based delivery.

For RTMPS, YouTube’s guidance requires an rtmps URL, a valid ingestion endpoint and application path, and port 443. Confirm the endpoint and path provided for your stream rather than substituting a guessed URL. Protocol support does not make every encoder or source file compatible; check your encoder’s protocol and codec capabilities.

Practical setup sequence

  1. Prepare the recording. Check the chosen hosted service’s accepted format, size, duration, and plan limits. For StreamYard automatic prerecorded mode, the documented format is MP4 with H.264 video. For other services, verify their current file requirements before uploading.
  2. Create the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, set up the live stream and obtain the stream key and ingest details. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or place it in a public document.
  3. For hosted playback, connect the destination. Follow that provider’s current YouTube connection flow, then select or upload the recording, set the schedule or loop behavior, and confirm the destination and event details before starting.
  4. For a self-managed encoder, configure the endpoint and protocol. Use the ingest details supplied by YouTube, select a protocol supported by both YouTube and your encoder, and enter the stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. If you select RTMPS, use the documented RTMPS endpoint and port 443.
  5. Check the event before relying on it. Confirm the correct recording, destination, schedule, and visibility settings. If the stream does not appear as expected, check YouTube’s live control room and the encoder or service status rather than repeatedly exposing or changing the stream key.

The available protocol information does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe setting for every encoder and stream. Use the current YouTube guidance and your encoder’s documented settings for the specific resolution, frame rate, codec, and latency target; do not assume one preset fits all protocols.

Protect the channel and the content

  • Check rights before scheduling. A recording’s presence on your device does not establish permission to broadcast it. Verify that you have the necessary rights for video, music, images, and other included material, including any applicable live-broadcast permissions.
  • Do not assume a prerecorded broadcast is exempt from YouTube rules. YouTube’s copyright and channel policies still apply to content streamed as live. Check current YouTube rules for copyright, reused content, and monetization before repeating or republishing material.
  • Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send content to your live event. Use the provider’s secure connection flow where available and regenerate the key through YouTube if it is exposed.
  • Check repetition and scheduling limits. A provider’s loop feature is a playout function, not a guarantee that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization. Review both the platform’s policies and the provider’s current plan limits.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The scheduled stream does not start. The event time, destination, schedule, or provider setup may be wrong. Check the event time zone and status, selected YouTube destination, stream key or account connection, and the service’s current plan limits.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. The endpoint, application path, protocol, or key may not match the event. Compare the encoder settings with the ingest details shown in YouTube Studio. For RTMPS, confirm the URL uses the required protocol and port 443.
A file will not upload or schedule. The file may not meet the provider’s format, size, duration, or plan requirements. For StreamYard automatic prerecorded mode, check MP4/H.264, its plan-dependent size and duration limits, and the 10 Mbps upload bitrate ceiling. For other providers, check their current file and plan specifications.
The stream plays, but overlays or comments are missing. StreamYard automatic prerecorded mode does not support studio overlays or displaying comments on-stream. Use a regular StreamYard studio workflow and start the broadcast yourself if those elements are required.
The stream description is not as expected after connecting with Castr. Castr’s instructions say the description must be edited in YouTube’s dashboard when connecting with the stream-key method. Update the description in YouTube Studio and verify the event details there.
A hosted service’s advertised feature is unavailable on your account. Availability may depend on plan, destination, or current product limits. Check the provider’s current plan matrix and eligibility details before rebuilding the workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an encoder with a protocol other than RTMP?

Yes. YouTube lists RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as supported third-party ingest protocols; your encoder must also support the protocol you choose.

Will every prerecorded-streaming service save a copy of my broadcast?

No. StreamYard says automatic prerecorded streams are no longer automatically saved to its library; confirm archive behavior directly with any other provider.
