Its current planned release window is Q2 2027, but that is not a guaranteed date. It is presented as a single-player space campaign combining ship combat, on-foot action, and exploration. You do not need to own Star Citizen to understand the campaign’s premise, but future download access is tied to an RSI account and a pledge that includes Squadron 42. Check the current terms and system requirements before buying or upgrading a PC.
Can you play Squadron 42 now?
No. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) said in a February 4, 2026 support update that eligible accounts can download Squadron 42 after development is complete, the game has been tested, and it is released. RSI’s April 2026 getting-started page also says the campaign is still in development and unavailable. RSI’s download FAQ and getting-started guide describe future access, not a way to start the campaign today.

When is Squadron 42 expected to release?
Steam currently lists a planned release window of Q2 2027. That is a target, not a confirmed launch date. In August 2026, game director Chris Roberts said the team had reviewed early-2027 release windows and chosen Q2, saying it “provides a better time for Squadron 42 to release.” PC Gamer reported his comments on August 27, 2026. Check the Steam listing and RSI announcements for changes as development continues.

Steam describes it as a single-player space adventure in which a rookie joins the UEE Navy. The listing describes piloting combat ships, fighting on foot, and exploring capital ships, stations, and frontier outposts with a crew. It also warns of strong language, intense violence, blood, and gore. These are the store’s current descriptions; they do not establish the campaign’s final structure, length, or performance.

RSI’s 2012 project FAQ framed Star Citizen as encompassing both a persistent world and an offline single-player campaign, with Wing Commander and Privateer named as inspirations. That is historical, project-level context, not proof of how the final Squadron 42 campaign will work. Although Steam labels the game single-player, the current listing does not confirm whether it can be played offline. RSI’s 2012 FAQ should not be treated as a current technical specification.
Do you need Star Citizen to play Squadron 42?
The current RSI materials describe Squadron 42 access through an RSI account with a pledge that includes Squadron 42; eligible accounts can download it after release. RSI says packages generally bundle a ship and other items, except for the standalone Squadron 42 pledge. Steam’s listing also says an RSI third-party account is required. These details concern future access and may change before launch, so verify the current pledge terms directly with RSI before purchasing. The available information does not establish that owning Star Citizen itself is a requirement.
