Short answer: On Steam, the Risk of Rain 2 base game is required, but one player owning Seekers of the Storm enables the expansion for the whole lobby. Does Seekers of the Storm require Risk of Rain 2?
Yes. Seekers of the Storm is downloadable content, not a standalone game. The Steam listing says you need the Risk of Rain 2 base game to use it. Steam lists the expansion’s release date as August 27, 2024. Steam store listing.

Does everyone in a multiplayer lobby need the DLC?
No, according to the Steam listing: one lobby member needs to own the DLC to enable it for the whole lobby. That does not give nonowners every owner privilege. The listing says nonowners cannot select the new survivors or permanently unlock the new items, logbooks, and other expansion content. This entitlement rule is specific to the Steam listing; check the relevant store or platform for its own multiplayer rules.
What survivors does Seekers of the Storm add?

Seeker
Seeker’s described play style combines damage against nearby monsters with healing for teammates. The Steam listing also says she can revive fallen allies after reaching a sufficiently tranquil state. It does not specify a numerical threshold, so the description alone should not be treated as a precise gameplay rule.
CHEF and False Son
CHEF and False Son are the other two expansion survivors. The cited official pages identify them but do not provide enough detail to describe their full abilities or current balance reliably.

What changed after launch?
In an announcement dated May 5, 2025, the Risk of Rain 2 team said it had improved and rebalanced Seeker, False Son, and CHEF, giving each two additional alternate skills. That is a dated update snapshot, not confirmation that their balance has remained unchanged in later builds. Risk of Rain 2 team announcement.

The Steam listing confirms that the expansion includes new items and logbooks, but the official sources cited here do not establish a complete current item catalogue or verified effects for each item. The developer’s May 2025 roadmap announcement also placed an overhaul of DLC items in an earlier phase, so item details need to be matched to the game version they describe. For a reliable item guide, use update notes that match your build and confirm the effects in that version of the game; a launch-era list may not reflect later changes.

What are the new areas and the Path of the Colossus?
The expansion opens stages in Petrichor V’s lost regions and adds a progression route called the Path of the Colossus that leads to the False Son. The Steam listing names three new stages: Helminth Hatchery, Reformed Altar, and Treeborn Colony. Steam store listing.

- You do not own the base game: The expansion is not standalone; Steam requires the base game.
- Your group wants to try the new survivors or route: The expansion adds three survivors, new stages, and the Path of the Colossus.
- Only one person in your Steam lobby owns it: Steam says that is enough to enable the DLC for the lobby, but nonowners cannot select its survivors or permanently unlock its content.
- You play on another platform: The Steam entitlement statement does not establish how ownership sharing works on other platforms, so check that platform’s listing or support information.
