Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart by joining an existing infantry squad, choose rifleman, and use a headset if you have one. Squad is designed around shared objectives, short voice reports, and coordinated movement rather than solo kills. On PS5, use the deployment screen or PlayStation’s friend, Game Base, invitation, and join-request tools to enter a group with an open slot. Stay near the squad marker, follow the current objective, and report what you see, where it is, and what you are doing.
The PS5 version is announced for PlayStation 5, but availability can depend on your region and the release state of the console build. The console onboarding is intended to simplify controls and menus without removing the communication, teamwork, coordination, and tactical decisions that define Squad.

What a first-time PS5 player needs to understand
Squad is not structured like a conventional run-and-gun shooter. Your useful actions are usually connected to a fireteam, squad objective, spawn plan, or information another player can act on. The official Squad manual puts the design principle plainly: “Many game mechanics in Squad rely on more than one player.” It also says, “Team play and communication go hand in hand.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat means a quiet, cautious rifleman who follows the plan can contribute more than a lone player with a high kill count. The console announcement says the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S work focuses on controls, UI, and onboarding while preserving “communication, teamwork, coordination, and tactical decision-making.” Expect to learn the game by listening, moving with your unit, and making useful reports.

Do not select squad leader for your first match. Leadership involves setting objectives, coordinating people, managing the squad’s communication, and making decisions that affect everyone’s movement and spawns. Learn the ordinary infantry loop first.
How to join a squad on PS5
Join an existing infantry squad before creating one. A formed squad already has a leader, an objective, and a communication rhythm that lets you learn by following. Creating a squad makes you responsible for organizing players before you understand the systems yourself.
Join from the deployment or server screen
- Install and launch the PS5 version when it is available in your region.
- Enter a match and open the deployment or server screen.
- Look for an existing infantry squad with an available place. Prefer a squad whose name or leader indicates a normal infantry role rather than a specialist-only group.
- Select the squad’s join option and wait for the game to place you in it. If the squad is full, choose another instead of repeatedly requesting the same one.
- Choose rifleman or another uncomplicated infantry kit, then tell the leader, “New to PS5 Squad—happy to follow orders.”
If the game shows no suitable group, refresh the list or enter another server. A squad that is technically open may still be disorganized; listen for a minute after spawning and move if nobody is giving or acknowledging instructions.

Use Game Base and join requests
Press the PS button and open Game Base. Depending on the group’s privacy setting, you may see a joinable party or a control to request to join. An open party allows eligible friends to enter directly; a closed party requires an invitation or approval. These party controls are separate from the in-game infantry squad, so confirm that you are in the same match and squad after joining the PlayStation group.

Which role should you play first?
Choose a role that lets you learn movement, shooting, objectives, and squad discipline without owning a specialized system. Rifleman is the safest starting point. After you can stay with the unit, understand the objective, and communicate clearly, move to a role that adds responsibility.
| Role | Responsibility | Mechanical complexity | Communication demand | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rifleman | General infantry work and objective play | Low | Low to moderate | First match and early practice |
| Medic | Move with the squad and handle revives and medical supplies | Moderate | Moderate to high | After you can read the fight and stay close to teammates |
| Support or engineer | Provide a requested capability and help with team systems | Moderate to high | High when the squad needs the role | When the leader asks for it and you know the basic loop |
| Anti-tank and other specialist kits | Answer specific threats or tactical requirements | High | High; timing and target information matter | After learning positioning and confirming the squad’s need |
| Squad leader | Coordinate players, objectives, movement, and squad decisions | High | Very high | Not a first role |
Rifleman: the recommended first kit
Rifleman keeps your attention on the fundamentals. Follow the squad marker, watch the objective, learn how the team moves between spawn points and positions, and practice making concise reports. You can observe how experienced players use specialist equipment without being responsible for it yourself.
Medic: useful after you know the rhythm
Medic is valuable, but selecting it immediately can create pressure you are not ready for. You need to recognize when a teammate is safely recoverable, remain close enough to help, and communicate before exposing yourself. Try it after a few matches in which you reliably stay with the squad and understand the local fight.
Support, engineer, anti-tank, and other specialists
Specialist kits are strongest when the squad has a clear requirement. Ask, or listen for, requests such as support for a planned action, an engineer for a task, or anti-tank capability against an identified vehicle threat. Do not take a limited specialist slot merely to experiment while the squad is asking for something else.

Why squad leader should wait
The manual describes leadership as foundational to team play and ties it directly to communication and coordination. A new leader must make plans, explain them, adjust when the situation changes, and keep players informed. Learn those decisions from the other side of the command channel before taking responsibility for them.
Your first-match routine
- Spawn with the squad. Use the squad’s selected spawn or rally plan instead of choosing an isolated location for convenience.
- Find the marker. Move toward the squad marker and identify the current objective before engaging distant targets.
- Stay close enough to help. You do not need to stand shoulder to shoulder, but remain within practical support distance and avoid wandering into a separate fight.
- Listen before transmitting. Let urgent contact reports and leader instructions through. Speak when you have information or need assistance.
- Confirm instructions. A short “copy” or “on it” tells the leader that the message was received.
- Report changes. If you are moving to a marker, taking a position, downed, or unable to complete an order, say so.
Useful beginner reports include: “Contact, east, 100 meters”; “Enemy infantry, north of the wall, 80 meters”; “Squad, I’m moving to the observe marker”; and “I’m down, can someone revive?” These statements give the squad something actionable without filling the channel with narration.
How voice chat works
The quick-start material documents three in-game voice channels. Use each for the people who can act on the information.
| Channel | Audience | Best use | Beginner rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local voice | Players nearby | Immediate movement, room or building information, and close-range coordination | Keep it brief; nearby players may not be in your squad |
| Squad voice | Your infantry squad | Enemy contacts, movement, support requests, and objective updates | Use this for most reports and acknowledge the leader here |
| Command voice | Leaders and the command network | Coordination between squad leaders | Do not use it as a new player; it is for leadership traffic |
The four-part callout
A dependable callout answers four questions: what did you see, where is it, which direction or distance matters, and what are you doing about it?
- What: infantry, vehicle, gunfire, supply problem, or a downed teammate.
- Where: a recognizable wall, road, building, marker, or compass direction.
- Direction or distance: add north, east, left of the marker, or an approximate distance when known.
- Action: say whether you are moving, holding, observing, reviving, or requesting help.
For example: “Enemy infantry, north of the wall, 80 meters; I’m holding this side.” Or: “Contact east, near the road; I’m moving back to the squad marker.” If you are uncertain, say that you are uncertain rather than presenting a guess as a confirmed target.

Microphone discipline
- Mute background noise and avoid narrating every shot, reload, or movement.
- Transmit once, clearly, instead of repeating a long explanation.
- Leave a pause after urgent information so the leader can respond.
- Say “copy” or “on it” when an instruction is clear; ask for repetition when it is not.
- Report when you are down or need a medic so teammates can make an informed decision.
PS5 parties, in-game voice, and Discord
Use the communication method that keeps the right people together. An external party can be convenient for friends, but it can also hide in-game squad traffic if players forget to monitor both channels.
| Method | Latency and clarity | Privacy | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-game local or squad voice | Directly tied to the match and its players | Only the relevant in-game audience hears each channel | Public matches and coordination with unfamiliar squadmates |
| PS5 Open Party | Convenient for friends already on PlayStation | Friends or eligible players can join according to party settings | A social group that wants a simple shared channel |
| PS5 Closed Party | Same console voice system with tighter access | Invitation or approval required | Private groups that do not want drop-in listeners |
| Discord voice on PS5 | Useful for an established Discord group after account linking | Controlled by the Discord server and channel permissions | Regular communities that already organize matches there |
On PS5, press the PS button and open Game Base to start or join an Open Party or Closed Party, view a joinable party, or send a request to join. PlayStation also supports Discord voice chat after you link your Discord and PlayStation accounts. Whichever method you use, keep the in-game squad channel available for players who are not in your private group.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Optional gear: a PS5 gaming headset
A PS5-compatible gaming headset with a microphone is the one accessory that directly improves this beginner experience. Prioritize a clear microphone, comfortable fit for long matches, a connection that PS5 supports, and an easy mute control. Wired and wireless designs can both work; choose based on your comfort, cable tolerance, and setup. No particular model is required for the role or communication habits described here.
How to find a squad that communicates
You cannot control every public squad, but you can identify a workable group quickly.
- Join an existing infantry squad rather than a squad that is already marked for a narrow specialist task.
- Listen for a short period after spawning. Leaders who state an objective and players who acknowledge it are good signs.
- Stay with the first movement order instead of immediately splitting off to chase distant enemies.
- Use a calm introduction such as, “New to PS5 Squad—happy to follow orders.” This sets expectations without demanding a tutorial.
- Ask one specific question at a time, for example, “Which marker should I hold?”
- If the group is silent, abusive, or openly hostile to new players, leave and join another squad. A different group is usually a better lesson than trying to repair a noncommunicating one.
The official console announcement points players toward the official Squad Discord to find other squaddies and discuss the game. A community group can be useful when you want scheduled practice or a consistent communication standard, but you still need to learn the in-game channels used by the squad you join.

Troubleshooting when nobody can hear you
Check the obvious mute and channel settings
- Confirm the headset is connected to the PS5 and that its microphone mute switch is off.
- Check the active game or party voice channel. Being in a PlayStation party does not automatically mean every squadmate is hearing your in-game transmission.
- Speak once and ask, “Can you hear me?” Avoid holding the transmit control continuously while troubleshooting.
- Ask a squadmate to confirm whether the problem affects everyone or only your microphone.
Separate a quiet squad from a broken microphone
If other players are communicating with one another but do not respond to you, recheck your microphone, transmit control, and channel. If nobody is speaking, the group may simply be silent. Give the squad one clear report and listen for a response before deciding.
Move to another group
When the squad remains silent or hostile, leave and join another one. Use the deployment screen to select a different infantry squad, or use Game Base’s joinable-party and request-to-join controls for a friend’s group. Do not stay in a dysfunctional squad merely because you joined it first.
When to expand beyond rifleman
Change roles after you can do four things consistently: identify the squad’s current objective, reach it without wandering away, make a location-based report, and follow a spawn or rally instruction. Then try medic if you want a support responsibility, or ask the leader which specialist capability the squad lacks.
Keep the same communication habits as your role changes. A medic should report when a revive is unsafe or complete; an anti-tank player should communicate target information before firing when possible; an engineer or support player should confirm the task and location. The role changes the decisions you make, not the need to stay connected to the squad.
Quick Recap
Common first-match mistakes
- Creating a squad immediately: join one first and learn how leaders organize movement.
- Taking a specialist kit for novelty: let the squad’s requirement determine the kit.
- Wandering after spawning: use the squad’s marker and spawn plan as your default route.
- Using the wrong voice audience: a local message may not reach the squad, and command voice is not a general chat channel.
- Overloading the microphone: short, location-based reports are more useful than continuous commentary.
- Staying in a silent group: switch squads when a clear report receives no response and the group shows no sign of coordination.
