SQL Server on Azure Local Is Generally Available for Connected and Disconnected Deployments

Microsoft announced SQL Server on Azure Local GA on September 28, 2026, for connected and disconnected operations. Here's what the deployment model means for management, licensing, and workload planning.

SQL Server on Azure Local reached general availability on September 28, 2026, for both connected and disconnected operations. It lets organizations run SQL Server in Windows Server or Linux virtual machines on Azure Local infrastructure in their own environment; it is not a hosted Azure database service.

What SQL Server on Azure Local is

SQL Server on Azure Local is a deployment model for running SQL Server workloads on customer-owned Azure Local infrastructure. SQL Server runs inside Windows Server or Linux virtual machines, while the infrastructure and management experience are designed to be consistent with Azure. The arrangement gives organizations control over where workloads run while retaining options for Azure-based management where connectivity permits.

Microsoft announced general availability (GA) for both operating modes on September 28, 2026. Microsoft’s SQL Server announcement describes the release; Microsoft Learn’s overview explains the deployment model.

How connected and disconnected deployments differ

The main choice is whether the environment can rely on external connectivity and Azure-based management. Microsoft calls the disconnected option Azure Local disconnected operations (ALDO).

Consideration Connected Disconnected operations (ALDO)
External connectivity Uses connectivity to Azure for Azure Arc management. Designed for restricted, intermittent, or unavailable external connectivity; operations continue locally.
Azure Arc management Azure Arc can manage SQL Server resources through Azure. Do not assume Azure-based management features are available while disconnected.
Licensing routes named by Microsoft Eligible existing SQL Server licenses or Azure Arc pay-as-you-go licensing. Eligible existing SQL Server licenses through Azure Hybrid Benefit.
Placement and processing SQL Server runs locally on Azure Local. SQL Server runs locally on Azure Local.

Microsoft’s descriptions establish the broad operating distinction, not a guarantee that every management feature works offline or that every existing license qualifies. The connected and disconnected summaries are also reflected in Microsoft’s Azure SQL Dev Corner.

Who might consider it

Microsoft positions local SQL Server deployment for organizations with sovereignty, regulatory, latency, operational-continuity, or edge-computing requirements. It cites public sector, defense, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and energy as possible sectors. These are intended use cases, not proof that the platform by itself satisfies a particular organization’s legal, security, or performance obligations.

  • Local data and processing placement: Useful when workloads need to run in an organization’s own environment.
  • Connectivity constraints: ALDO is intended for environments where external access is limited or unavailable.
  • Azure-connected management: Connected deployments can use Azure Arc to manage SQL Server resources through Azure.

Licensing is separate from Azure Local

Microsoft states that SQL Server is licensed separately from the Azure Local infrastructure platform. For connected deployments, the announcement names eligible existing SQL Server licenses—including licenses with Software Assurance or qualifying subscriptions—and Azure Arc pay-as-you-go as licensing routes. Fully disconnected deployments use eligible existing SQL Server licenses through Azure Hybrid Benefit.

These are high-level descriptions, not a determination that a particular contract or license qualifies. Before budgeting or deployment, verify entitlement, edition, core counts, subscription status, and agreement terms against current Microsoft licensing documentation and the organization’s contracts. The announcement does not provide customer-specific cost calculations.

Plan operations for the workload

GA status does not remove the need to design and validate the environment. Microsoft Learn advises planning availability, backup, and disaster recovery around workload requirements. Microsoft’s materials also cover hardware selection, installation, monitoring, performance tuning, high availability, and related hybrid services.

  • Confirm hardware suitability and deployment prerequisites for the intended configuration.
  • Plan backup, availability, and disaster recovery against the workload’s recovery needs.
  • Determine which monitoring and management capabilities are available in the chosen connectivity mode.
  • Validate performance and high-availability design for the workload rather than assuming they are automatic.

The announcement does not establish that these capabilities are automatic or included at no additional cost. Use the detailed Microsoft Learn guidance for architecture and implementation planning.

Foundry Local remains in preview

The GA announcement also discusses Foundry Local on Azure Local, an AI inference capability designed to keep processing on-premises. Microsoft labels Foundry Local as a preview, so its availability and features may change. The SQL Server GA announcement does not make Foundry Local generally available.
