This is a specialist modification—not a setting you enable in Alexa—and the installation erases the Spot.
What EchoPortal does
EchoPortal is a two-part project: a Kotlin dashboard shell that runs on the Echo Spot and a small Windows tray agent that sends information to it over the local network. The interface uses a ring launcher and swipeable faces, according to the EchoPortal README.

The creator’s Reddit post describes displays for PC and GPU telemetry, stock and cryptocurrency prices, weather-linked clock faces and generated weather art, plus progress monitoring for ComfyUI image generation and Claude Code tasks. A voice-to-text face can transcribe speech locally and type it into the currently focused PC window. These features are creator-described; the available sources do not establish independent testing of their performance.
Optional integrations
The README identifies NVIDIA hardware as optional for the voice face and ComfyUI as optional for the ComfyUI and Sky faces. Other faces can work without those components. The documented PC-agent target is Windows 10 or 11; the project does not say that a separate PC purchase is required.

Which Echo Spot is supported
The README specifies the 2017 first-generation Echo Spot, model VN94DQ, codename rook. It does not claim compatibility with later Echo Show devices or other Echo Spot generations. Do not assume that a newer Amazon display can run this build.
The documented setup pairs that Spot with LineageOS 18.1 and a Windows 10 or 11 computer running the agent. The repository is published under the MIT license and says the project is not affiliated with Amazon.

What installing it involves
EchoPortal’s quick-start outline calls for unlocking the Spot’s bootloader with amonet, installing TWRP, flashing LineageOS, then installing the Windows agent and Android shell and connecting the Spot to the agent. The project documentation warns that this process erases the device and voids any warranty.
That makes the decision consequential: keep the Spot’s Amazon software and ordinary Alexa role, or accept a device-erasing custom firmware installation to repurpose it as a dedicated dashboard. The sources do not provide a tested comparison or establish which choice is best for every owner.

Security and demo limitations
The EchoPortal README warns that the Windows agent listens on the local network without authentication and recommends running it only on a trusted network. The voice face can type into the focused window, so dictation may enter text wherever the PC’s focus happens to be. Consider both behaviors before connecting the device or using dictation around sensitive work.
The creator disclosed that the demonstration video is a composite made from a native Android screen capture and an image, while saying the app and interface are real. It should not be treated as unedited footage proving that every feature was operating on a physical Spot. The project repository gives a more concrete account of its architecture and requirements, but its existence is not independent confirmation of feature performance.

Is it worth trying?
EchoPortal is most relevant to someone who already has the specified first-generation Spot, wants a compact always-visible dashboard, and is comfortable with bootloader unlocking, custom firmware and the security trade-offs of a LAN agent. If preserving Alexa functions, avoiding device erasure, or keeping the setup simple matters more, retaining Amazon’s software is the lower-risk option. The creator’s reported $4 thrift-store purchase is an anecdote about one unit, not a typical price or evidence of current availability.
