For a long-term investor choosing among these three U.S.-listed funds for S&P 500 exposure, VOO and IVV have the lower stated expense ratios: 0.03%, compared with SPY’s 0.0945% gross expense ratio in the issuer materials reviewed. SPY may be a better fit for someone who values its listed options or trades actively. All three target substantially similar large-cap U.S. stocks, but your account, trading costs and investing needs still matter.
How SPY, VOO and IVV compare
These exchange-traded funds are designed to provide exposure to the S&P 500, though their stated objectives are not worded identically. State Street says SPY seeks, before expenses, to correspond generally to the index’s price and yield performance. Vanguard’s fact sheet names the S&P 500 as VOO’s benchmark, while IVV’s SEC-filed summary prospectus says it seeks to track an index of large-capitalization U.S. equities and identifies the S&P 500 as its underlying index.

| Fund | Benchmark and stated objective | Stated fee in cited issuer material | Trading context |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPY | Seeks, before expenses, to correspond generally to the S&P 500’s price and yield performance. | 0.0945% gross expense ratio, according to State Street’s product page accessed October 4, 2026. | State Street lists options availability. It reports inception on January 22, 1993. |
| VOO | Vanguard’s fact sheet identifies the S&P 500 as its benchmark. | 0.03% expense ratio, according to Vanguard’s fact sheet dated June 30, 2026. | ETF shares trade through a stockbroker and may trade above or below net asset value (NAV); brokerage commissions may apply. |
| IVV | Seeks to track an index of large-cap U.S. equities; its underlying index is the S&P 500. | 0.03% annual fund operating expenses in the SEC summary prospectus dated July 31, 2026. | Listed on NYSE Arca, according to its SEC filing. BlackRock reported 505 holdings as of October 1, 2026. |
Holdings and portfolio details can change. State Street reported 503 SPY index holdings as of October 1, 2026; BlackRock reported 505 IVV holdings on that date. These counts are not a guarantee that the funds’ portfolios or distributions are identical.
What the expense-ratio gap means in dollars
The stated difference between SPY’s 0.0945% gross expense ratio and the 0.03% rates reported for VOO and IVV is 0.0645 percentage points. If an account held a constant $10,000 balance for a year, that difference would equal about $6.45 in annual expenses. This is arithmetic based on the stated ratios, not a projection of returns or an estimate of total ownership costs.

Fund expenses are only one part of what an investor pays. Brokerage commissions, bid-ask spreads, purchase and sale prices relative to NAV, and how often and how much you trade can also affect realized costs. The cited materials do not establish a complete same-date comparison of spreads or trading volume across all three ETFs, so they do not support a precise liquidity ranking.
When SPY may suit your needs
You use listed options or trade frequently
State Street lists options availability for SPY. That feature may matter if you have a specific options strategy or need to trade the ETF actively. Weigh it against your brokerage’s charges, spreads, trade size and frequency; options availability alone does not establish that SPY will be cheaper or more suitable for every active investor.

You have a reason to keep an existing position
If you already own SPY, the lower expense ratios of VOO and IVV do not by themselves determine whether switching is worthwhile. Selling can create transaction costs and, in a taxable account, may have tax consequences. The right comparison depends on your circumstances and account type.
When VOO or IVV may fit better
For an investor seeking straightforward S&P 500 exposure and placing weight on the stated annual expense ratio, VOO and IVV are the lower-fee choices in the issuer materials cited above. Their reported rates are the same, so the fee comparison alone does not distinguish one from the other. Consider your brokerage, account features and current fund documents when choosing between them.

ETF shares trade on an exchange, and the price you pay or receive can differ from NAV. Vanguard specifically notes that VOO may trade at a premium or discount and that brokerage commissions may apply. These trading mechanics matter for any ETF purchase or sale, not just for comparing expense ratios.
What these funds do not provide
An S&P 500 fund is U.S. large-cap equity exposure, not a complete portfolio of every U.S. stock or a globally diversified investment. IVV’s SEC-filed prospectus says that, as of March 31, 2026, the S&P 500 represented approximately 88% of the market capitalization of publicly traded U.S. equities. It also notes significant representation in consumer and technology sectors. That breadth is substantial, but it does not remove concentration or market risk.

- Losses are possible: IVV’s prospectus says investors could lose some or all of their investment; Vanguard states that ETF products can result in loss of principal.
- Tracking is not exact: IVV’s prospectus explains that expenses, cash holdings, timing, index changes, taxes and other factors can cause its returns to differ from its index.
- Tax outcomes vary: SPY’s product page says actual after-tax returns depend on an investor’s tax situation. Its displayed after-tax returns are not relevant to shares held in tax-deferred accounts such as 401(k)s or IRAs. This does not establish a universal tax-efficiency ranking among the three funds.
A practical way to choose
- Confirm your goal. Decide whether you want S&P 500 exposure specifically; none of these funds is a substitute for a globally diversified or all-market portfolio.
- Compare current fees. Check each issuer’s latest fact sheet or prospectus, since expenses can change. The figures above are tied to the dated materials identified in the comparison table.
- Check how you will trade. Review your brokerage’s commissions, available order types, fractional-share access and the price relative to NAV. If options availability matters, State Street lists it for SPY.
- Account for taxes and switching costs. Taxable and tax-advantaged accounts can have different consequences; consider those before selling an existing position.
- Read the current fund documents. Confirm the investment objective, risks and fee details for the share class and account you plan to use.
