Download its game while online and launch it once with an internet connection. After that, Nintendo says you can start it offline as long as the game-key card is inserted. A regular physical game card is the simpler choice if you want to avoid that download-and-first-launch setup.
What’s the difference between a game card and a game-key card?
Both are physical cards, but they do not store the game in the same way. A regular physical game card is Nintendo’s standard game-card format. A game-key card does not contain the full game data: it acts as a key to download that data to the console over the internet. Nintendo Support explains the two formats and the game-key-card setup requirements.

Can you play a game-key-card game offline?
Yes, after the initial setup. Nintendo says internet is needed to download the game and to launch it for the first time. Once those steps are complete, the game can be started without internet, provided the game-key card is inserted.

That means a game-key card does not require a constant internet connection just because it is a game-key card. Nintendo’s shareholder Q&A also confirms that an internet connection is required to download game-key-card data for first use: Nintendo’s 2025 annual-meeting Q&A.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What to do before taking a game-key card offline
- Check available storage. The download needs enough free space in the console’s internal storage or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the required amount is shown on the game’s packaging and digital store page.
- Download the game while connected to the internet. An account is not required to download game-key-card data, according to Nintendo Support.
- Launch the game once online. Nintendo identifies the first launch as requiring an internet connection.
- Keep the game-key card inserted for offline play. Nintendo says the game can then be started without internet while the card is in the console.
For Nintendo’s full requirements, see its Game-Key Card Overview.
Which format is the better fit for offline play?
| Question | Regular physical game card | Game-key card |
|---|---|---|
| Does the card contain the full game data? | It is Nintendo’s regular physical game-card format. | No. It provides a key to download the full game data. |
| Internet needed before playing? | Nintendo’s game-key-card overview does not state a full-game download requirement for regular game cards. | Yes, for the download and first launch. |
| Can it be played offline later? | It is the straightforward physical option for preparing to play offline; a particular game may still have online features or update requirements. | Yes, after setup, with the card inserted. |
| Storage for a full-game download? | No full-game download requirement is stated in Nintendo’s game-key-card overview. | Enough internal or microSD Express storage is required; check the packaging or store page for the amount. |
Do not confuse game-key cards with Virtual Game Cards
A Virtual Game Card is a separate format for a digital game or add-on, not a physical game-key card. Nintendo says a digital game loaded as a Virtual Game Card can be played offline on that console. If you plan to rely on one during a trip, make sure it is loaded onto the console first. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide.

Does offline card play guarantee every feature works?
No. Nintendo’s guidance explains how the card formats work; it does not guarantee that every game’s features are available offline. A specific title may need an update or an internet connection for some features or services. Check the game’s requirements before relying on it offline, and install any needed update while you have access to the internet.
