Spotify said it submitted a U.S. iPhone app update to Apple on May 1, 2025, after the April 30, 2025 ruling in Epic Games v. Apple. The proposed changes let users see subscription prices and promotions, follow links to subscribe or change plans, and use payment options on Spotify’s website. Spotify said Apple approved the update on May 2. A later May 19 update added U.S. audiobook prices, individual audiobook purchases, and extra listening hours.
What Spotify submitted on May 1, 2025
Spotify’s announcement described a U.S.-specific app update submitted to Apple after the April 30 ruling. According to Spotify, the update would make three subscription-related actions possible inside the iPhone app:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- View subscription prices and promotions.
- Follow links to subscribe or change a plan.
- See payment options available through Spotify’s website.
This was a digital purchase-flow change, not a new iPhone or other hardware announcement. Spotify’s statement describes the intended functionality; it does not independently establish the exact interface or whether every account currently sees the same screens.

Spotify updated its announcement on May 2, 2025, to say Apple had approved the app update. The submission date and approval date are separate: Spotify reported submitting on May 1 and approval on May 2.

What changed for audiobooks on May 19
Spotify’s later May 19 update said users in the United States could see audiobook pricing, buy individual audiobooks, and purchase additional “Top Up” listening hours. Spotify wrote that Premium included 15 audiobook listening hours per month at that time. That 15-hour figure is a statement from Spotify’s 2025 update, not a verified current allowance; check the current terms for the account and plan in question.
Can you buy Premium or audiobooks in the iPhone app?
Spotify said U.S. users could use the updated app to view subscription information and reach Spotify’s website for payment, rather than completing that subscription payment through Apple’s in-app purchase flow. Spotify also said U.S. users could buy individual audiobooks and extra listening hours. Geography and timing matter: these statements apply to the reported 2025 U.S. rollout, and the cited announcements do not confirm present-day availability for every user.

How to check for the Spotify update on iPhone
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your Apple ID image or profile icon.
- Find Spotify in the available updates list.
- Tap UPDATE.
Spotify’s support instructions also describe enabling automatic app updates in iPhone settings. If Spotify does not appear in the updates area, Spotify says the app is already on the latest version. Updating the app alone is not confirmation that a particular account has received every feature described in the 2025 announcement.
How the U.S. ruling differs from the EEA context
Spotify attributed this rollout to the U.S. ruling in Epic Games v. Apple. Separately, a European Commission decision addressed Apple’s anti-steering provisions and restrictions affecting music-streaming services’ ability to inform iOS users about alternative subscription choices in the European Economic Area. Those are different proceedings in different jurisdictions; the EEA decision should not be treated as the legal basis or identical equivalent of the U.S. ruling.
