Did the 2026 Mac mini get a new design?
Post-launch coverage from Tom’s Guide and MacRumors reports that the M6 Mac mini keeps the predecessor’s overall design and a footprint of about 5 by 5 inches. Those outlets, rather than Apple’s announcement, are the sources for the enclosure observation.

No reviewed source confirms a different enclosure, altered dimensions, a new port layout or a launch date for another physical redesign.

The Thunderbolt-generation difference matters if you use high-speed storage, docks or multiple professional peripherals. Check the exact port specification for the configuration you intend to buy rather than assuming that every Mac mini tier has identical connectivity.

Where the redesign rumor came from
Before the launch, MacRumors reported—attributing the information to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman—that Apple was testing Mac mini models with M5 Pro and M6 processors. The report said timing could depend on memory supply. The August announcement confirmed those chip families, but the earlier report did not establish a new chassis.
In other words, the pre-launch rumor was a roadmap report about processors, not evidence that Apple had redesigned the enclosure.

Why the previous redesign can cause confusion
Apple’s Environmental Progress Report says the company launched a carbon-neutral Mac mini in 2024 and describes power-supply and thermal work developed around Apple silicon. That material provides context for the previous generation’s engineering; it does not announce another physical redesign.

Buy now if the current shape suits your setup
Buy the M6 model if you want a current Mac mini in the established compact format and your workload does not require the M5 Pro tier. Choose M5 Pro when your applications and peripheral requirements justify the higher chip class. Since the 2026 update is already available, waiting solely for a rumored enclosure change has no confirmed payoff.

Wait if your decision depends on a specific physical change
Waiting is reasonable only when you need an unconfirmed feature such as different dimensions, a revised port arrangement or another exterior change. Apple has supplied no date or design description for such a model, so there is no reliable timetable to plan around.
Check connectivity before ordering
List the displays, storage devices, docks and other peripherals you use, then compare them with the exact M6 or M5 Pro specification. The two tiers do not use the same Thunderbolt generation, which can affect expansion plans even though the enclosure remains compact.
What remains unknown about a future redesign
- No sourced launch date has been established.
- No sourced images or dimensions for a next-generation enclosure have been established.
- No future port layout, thermal design or power-supply specification has been confirmed.
- No credible probability or percentage for a redesign has been published in the reviewed coverage.
