Splunk Search Results in Your App: REST API, JavaScript SDK, or Dashboard Tokens?

Retrieve Splunk search-job output with the REST API or JavaScript SDK, then map its rows and fields to your app’s grid. Dashboard Studio tokens serve a different purpose.

To put Splunk search results in a data grid in your own application, retrieve a search job’s output through Splunk’s search-job REST API or its official JavaScript SDK, then map the returned fields and rows to the grid’s data model. Dashboard Studio tokens are for content inside Splunk dashboards; they are not a general replacement for an external app’s API integration.

Choose the right route for your app

Route What it does Best fit
Search-job REST API Provides endpoints for retrieving job events, results, or preview results; Splunk also documents a one-shot search endpoint. Splunk REST search endpoint reference An app making HTTP requests directly and managing its own job and result retrieval flow.
Official JavaScript SDK Provides a JavaScript client surface for dispatching a saved search and requesting a job’s results. Its results example includes an offset parameter. Splunk JavaScript SDK reference A JavaScript app where using the SDK is preferable to building those requests directly.
Dashboard Studio tokens Expose search result fields and job metadata to dashboard content. Dashboard Studio token reference Visualizations and related content in a Splunk dashboard, not an independently built app grid.

The documentation describes these capabilities, but does not establish that one external integration route is universally faster or better. Choose based on whether your app already uses JavaScript, whether you want a client library, and how your app will obtain the search job and retrieve its results.

How to move a search into a grid

  1. Dispatch or identify the search job. Use the API or SDK flow appropriate to your app. The JavaScript SDK reference describes dispatching a saved search to create a job.
  2. Request the appropriate output. Use the job’s results endpoint for tabular search results. The REST reference also lists endpoints for events and preview results; select the output type that matches what the grid needs.
  3. Retrieve the needed subset. The SDK’s results request demonstrates an offset parameter. Decide how your app will request additional results when needed; the cited documentation does not prescribe a universal grid pagination strategy.
  4. Map fields and rows to your grid. Convert the returned result rows and fields into the row-and-column structure required by the grid component you chose. This mapping is specific to your app; Splunk’s cited material does not require or provide an adapter for a particular grid library.

Keep dashboard tokens separate from app integration

In Dashboard Studio, a token can refer to a search result field with syntax such as $search name:result.<field>$. A different token, $search name:job.resultCount$, refers to job metadata. The token reference also lists job properties such as status and completion. These tokens are intended for dashboard visualizations and content; an external application should retrieve search-job output through the REST API or SDK instead.

Plan security and deployment for your environment

The cited API and SDK references establish result-retrieval routes, but they do not specify the authentication configuration, cross-origin policy, credential-handling design, or framework setup for your particular app. Those depend on your deployment and architecture. Treat credential exposure and network access as design requirements to resolve for your environment; do not assume that placing Splunk credentials in browser code is an appropriate integration pattern.
