What a Local IP Address Means—and How It Differs by Network

A local IP address identifies a device within a limited network context, but the phrase can refer to several address types with different scopes.

A local IP address identifies a device or network interface within a limited network context. In everyday home-network use, it usually means a private IPv4 address assigned for communication on a local network. But “local IP address” is informal: it can also refer to link-local IPv4 or IPv6, or an IPv6 Unique Local Address. These types have different scopes, so the address range matters.

What “local IP address” means

“Local IP address” is not the name of one standardized address range. It is a general phrase for an address used within a limited network context. The most common home-network meaning is a private IPv4 address, such as one beginning with 192.168, assigned for communication within a home or business network.

Standards also define other local-use addresses. IPv4 link-local addresses support communication on the same physical or logical link when ordinary address configuration is unavailable. IPv6 has both link-local addresses and Unique Local Addresses (ULAs). The distinction is about scope and purpose, not just whether an address looks unfamiliar or is being used locally.

Local-use address types and their scopes

Type Prefix Intended scope
Private IPv4 (RFC 1918) 10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255 (10/8); 172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255 (172.16/12); 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255 (192.168/16) Private networks; the ranges can be reused on separate networks. RFC 1918
IPv4 link-local 169.254.0.0–169.254.255.255 (169.254/16) Communication on the same physical or logical link, commonly when regular address configuration is unavailable. RFC 3927
IPv6 link-local fe80::/10 Link-only scope. RFC 4291
IPv6 Unique Local Address (ULA) FC00::/7 Local communications; not expected to be routable on the global Internet. RFC 4193

Is a local IP address the same as a private IP address?

Not necessarily. In ordinary home-network conversation, people often use “local IP” to mean a private IPv4 address. Technically, however, a private IPv4 address is only one category of local-use address. An address in 169.254/16 is IPv4 link-local, not an RFC 1918 private address; IPv6 link-local and ULA addresses are separate categories as well.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

RFC 1918 reserves its three IPv4 ranges for private internets and allows them to be reused across separate networks. As a result, an address such as 192.168.1.10 is not globally unique: it may identify different devices on networks that are not connected to one another.

What does an address beginning with 169.254 mean?

An IPv4 address in 169.254/16 is a link-local address. RFC 3927 defines this range for same-link communication when regular address configuration is unavailable. It is not intended for communication with devices beyond the same physical or logical link. The RFC advises administrators who configure their own local addresses to use RFC 1918 space rather than 169.254/16.

Does a local IP address prevent Internet access?

No. A private IPv4 address does not, by itself, determine whether the device can access Internet services. RFC 1918 describes private hosts reaching external services through mediating gateways. A device can use a local private address on its network while its traffic reaches the Internet through a gateway; the address seen by an external service can be associated with that gateway or another part of the network arrangement.

Can a device have more than one IP address?

Yes. A device or service may have multiple addresses with different types and scopes. A residential-network service, for example, may have a global address alongside a ULA, a link-local address, or a private IPv4 address. Seeing a local-use address therefore does not establish that it is the device’s only address or its public-facing address. RFC 9526 describes these address types in residential-network contexts.
