To stay relevant in martech, build a balanced skill set: use AI with judgment, turn reliable data into business decisions, understand how marketing systems and channels connect, and protect customer trust. Pair that technical foundation with adaptability, strategic thinking, communication, and evidence of work you have done. No checklist guarantees job security; the aim is to keep learning as tools and roles change.
What martech skills matter most now?
The American Marketing Association’s 2026 report identifies adaptability, comfort with ambiguity, strategic thinking, discernment and decision-making, quality control, business acumen, original thinking, influence and storytelling, and AI fluency as future-oriented capabilities. Its findings draw on 1,412 marketing practitioners surveyed in December 2025 and January 2026, with a reported margin of error of 3% at a 95% confidence level, alongside job-posting data, interviews, and secondary research. These are findings about the AMA respondent group and its analysis, not a universal forecast for every marketer or market. Read the AMA’s 2026 report summary.

The report says marketing job postings mentioning AI doubled during 2025, while marketing jobs remained 27% below pre-pandemic levels. The latter is the report’s labor-market framing; learning a new skill cannot by itself reverse employment trends. In a separate 2025 study, 43% of respondents expected generative AI to become more important over the following five years. That study analyzed more than 450 marketing job postings and received 1,279 survey responses; postings were collected from February through August 2024, and the survey was sent to 220,483 AMA subscribers in August 2024. The AMA notes that the sample skews toward North American members, so its competency-gap findings should not be generalized uncritically. 2026 report summary · 2025 report summary.
For the practical question “What marketing skills will be most important in the next five years?”, the best answer is not one tool or specialization. It is the ability to combine execution, measurement, sound judgment, and business communication.

How can you use AI without outsourcing your judgment?
AI fluency means knowing when and how to use a tool, as well as when to reject or revise its output. Gartner’s guidance points to four useful abilities:
- Identify marketing tasks where AI is likely to help.
- Choose technology suited to the task rather than using a tool simply because it is available.
- Write prompts that provide the context and constraints needed for useful results.
- Check outputs for accuracy, bias, ethics, and fit with the brand.
Make the review process concrete: record the problem, the tool’s contribution, what you checked, what you changed, and the result. Gartner notes that skills, data readiness, and workflow design can keep organizations from scaling beyond experimentation. Gartner’s guidance on marketing skills.
The AMA’s 2026 report uses a Human Agency Scale to group activities by how disrupted they may be by AI. In its framework, email marketing, SEO, paid media, performance analytics, copywriting, lead generation, market research, and graphic design fall among the most disrupted activities. Content marketing, data literacy and storytelling, customer experience, consumer behavior, and influencer marketing sit in an equal-partnership category. Strategy, brand management, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, leadership, emotional intelligence, ethical decision-making, and adaptability are placed among the least disrupted and more human-led. These are framework-based assessments, not fixed predictions for every employer or job. AMA’s 2026 report summary.

How do you turn marketing data into a decision?
Reporting is only the beginning. A useful measurement skill set moves from a number to a recommendation:
- Understand the metric. Know what it measures and what it leaves out.
- Check the data. Confirm that collection is consistent enough to support the comparison you want to make.
- Interpret performance. Analyze campaign effectiveness and relevant website, email, or other channel results.
- Connect it to the business. Explain the implications for ROI, attribution, customers, or business goals without claiming more certainty than the data supports.
- Recommend an action. Tell stakeholders what to change, continue, or test, and why.
The AMA’s competency model includes consistent data collection, campaign analysis, performance tracking, optimization recommendations, and communication of metrics, attribution, and business impact. Its 2025 report identifies digital marketing, data and analytics, proving ROI, and data privacy and compliance among the largest competency gaps in its study. What martech systems and channels should you understand?
Build transferable understanding of how marketing work flows across systems rather than tying your expertise to a single interface. The AMA’s “Channels and Technology” domain spans websites, SEO, SEM, CRM, analytics, email campaigns, social activity, and other marketing systems. You do not need to master every platform. You should be able to explain how a channel or system supports a customer journey, what information it uses, how its performance is measured, and where it connects to other work. Why do privacy and ethics belong in a technical skill set?
Marketing decisions can affect how personal data is collected, used, protected, and represented to customers. The AMA model places ethics at the center of marketing competency and includes truth in advertising, data privacy, compliance and security, and responsible AI. In the AMA’s words, “Marketing ethics are the norms and values that guide decisions about brand and marketing activities and that promote trust and transparency.”
The European Commission’s DigComp 3.0 offers a broader digital competence framework: it integrates AI-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes across all 21 competences and includes information evaluation, data literacy, personal-data protection, and privacy. It is not a martech job specification or legal guide. Applicable legal duties depend on the market and the data involved. AMA Marketing Competency Model · European Commission: DigComp framework.
How should you build a durable skill portfolio?
If you are early in your career
The AMA recommends building expertise across several areas rather than betting everything on one specialization, with depth in two or three domains. Choose areas that fit the roles you want, then practice connecting them: for example, explain how a campaign decision used data, a channel, and a clear business goal. If you use AI, be ready to describe where it helped and how you assessed the result.
Rank #4
If you lead a team
Emphasize strategy, discernment, business acumen, and storytelling with data. Teams need people who can set priorities, judge whether outputs are good enough, and persuade colleagues to act on evidence—not simply produce more material.
Make your work legible
For one project, write down the problem, the data you used, the decision you made, your contribution, and the measurable outcome. Include the process behind any AI-assisted work. A portfolio of specific work is stronger evidence of capability than a credential alone.
Where can you learn and practise?
Structured learning can help organize study, but the available sources do not establish that any one certificate causes a promotion or improves hiring outcomes more than another. Compare learning options by what you will be able to do afterward:

- Will you leave with a work sample, or only a credential?

HubSpot Academy describes its training as free and online, with topics including marketing, content, social, email, automation, inbound, and software. It can be a no-cost way to explore platform concepts and complete coursework; its certifications are vendor-specific, not platform-neutral qualifications. Neither provider’s course description, by itself, demonstrates independent learning outcomes or employment impact. HubSpot Academy.
Alongside coursework, practise on a real or self-directed project: define a goal, select a channel, decide how to measure the result, consider data and privacy requirements, and document what you learned. Check job descriptions in your target market to see which capabilities recur, because the available evidence does not establish one definitive skills ranking for every region, employer, or martech role.
