Shut the laptop down, unplug its charger and accessories, and keep it off. Blot liquid from the outside without pushing it into ports or keys. If Coke may have reached the inside, arrange a qualified repair assessment rather than relying on drying alone.
What to do immediately
- Disconnect power and accessories. Unplug the charger and any connected devices. Apple’s guidance for a wet Mac is to “Immediately shut down your Mac and disconnect from all power sources.” If you have another laptop brand, check its manufacturer’s instructions as well. Apple’s wet-Mac guidance is specific to Apple computers.
- Shut the laptop down as soon as you can safely do so. Do not leave it running, restart it, or turn it on later just to test whether it works.
- Blot visible liquid on the exterior. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and gentle blotting. Keep the cloth away from openings and do not press liquid farther into the keyboard, ports, or seams. Apple’s cleaning guidance concerns surface cleaning, not cleaning liquid from inside a laptop.
- Keep it disconnected. Do not charge it or reconnect wet accessories or cables. Apple warns that charging with liquid in a USB-C port can corrode the pins and lead to permanent damage or connectivity problems. See its USB-C liquid-detection guidance.
What not to do
- Do not use heat or compressed air. Apple specifically advises against both for a wet USB-C port.
- Do not put the laptop in rice. Rice is not a substitute for inspection or repair.
- Do not push anything into ports. Avoid cotton swabs, paper towels, or other objects that can leave fibers or cause damage.
- Do not pour cleaner into the keyboard or openings. Exterior-cleaning instructions are not directions for treating liquid inside the laptop.
- Do not open the case based on generic advice. The correct procedure depends on the model. Apple’s safety guidance says built-in battery service should be handled by trained technicians or performed by following its repair manual; consult the equivalent guidance for your device.
When drying is not enough
Coke is a sugary drink, and exterior dryness cannot establish that internal components are dry or free of residue. The manufacturer material cited here does not provide a Coke-specific internal-cleaning method or a safe drying time for liquid inside an unspecified laptop. If the spill was more than a trace, liquid reached the keyboard or a port, or you cannot tell whether it entered the chassis, leave the laptop off and seek a qualified assessment.

Apple advises getting help from an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store as soon as possible if liquid gets inside an Apple product. A laptop from another manufacturer should be assessed under that brand’s service guidance or by a qualified repair provider. The appropriate next step is an inspection—not an assumption that waiting until the outside looks dry makes the machine safe.

Apple’s one-day advice applies to a USB-C port, not an internal Coke spill
For supported MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models that show a liquid-detection alert, Apple advises leaving the Mac disconnected and waiting at least a day before checking whether the USB-C connector is dry. If the alert returns, Apple says to leave it in a dry area with airflow for another day before checking again. This is connector-specific guidance for a detected wet port; it is not an all-clear interval for a sugary-drink spill inside a laptop. If internal exposure is plausible, arrange an assessment rather than treating that wait as proof the computer is safe.

Check repair and coverage terms before authorizing work
Apple states that liquid damage is not covered by its one-year limited warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan. AppleCare for Mac includes accidental-damage protection subject to a service fee and exclusions. Those terms apply to Apple coverage; coverage for other brands depends on the applicable warranty or protection plan. Check the terms for your device, plan, and region, including any consumer-law rights, before assuming a repair will be covered.
When contacting a repair provider, ask whether it has experience with your exact make and model, whether the assessment includes internal inspection and residue cleaning, what the diagnostic fee and total estimate are, how long service may take, whether repairs carry a warranty, and how your data will be handled. These are questions to verify with the provider; service scope and terms vary.
