If you’re having problems connecting to a VPN in Windows, first confirm that you selected the intended VPN profile. Similar connection names can make entries easy to confuse, but the name is only a label—not proof that two profiles use the same server, VPN type, or sign-in method. If the VPN is managed by your organization, also verify its assignment and the device’s sync status before diagnosing the connection itself.
Identify the entry Windows is trying to use
Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN, or open the taskbar network or VPN list. Find the entry that your employer, school, or VPN provider told you to use. Microsoft explains that the connection name is the name you look for when connecting; it is a recognizable label, not the server address. See Microsoft’s Windows VPN connection instructions.

If several entries have similar names, don’t choose based on the label alone. A selected profile may have a different destination or configuration from another profile with a nearly identical name.

Check the selected entry’s details against the connection information supplied by the organization or service that provided it. Compare the fields that determine where and how the VPN connects:

- Connection name: The label displayed in Windows.
- Server name or address: The VPN destination; it is not necessarily the same as the connection name.
- VPN type: The protocol or type configured for the profile.
- Sign-in method: The credentials or authentication method the profile expects.
Windows VPN profiles can also include routing, name-resolution, proxy, and automatic-connection settings. Microsoft documents these options in its Windows VPN profile options reference. Matching names alone therefore cannot establish that two entries behave alike.
For an organization-managed VPN, verify deployment
If your organization deploys the VPN through Microsoft Intune, a profile appearing on a device does not by itself confirm that the intended profile is assigned to the right user or device. An administrator should check the profile’s assignment group and confirm that the device has synced or checked in. If the VPN relies on Trusted Root or SCEP certificate profiles, verify that those dependencies were deployed to the device as well.

Microsoft’s Intune VPN profile troubleshooting guidance covers assignment, device sync, certificate dependencies, and connection failures. A local Windows profile listing and the cloud-side assignment are separate checks: one does not prove the other.

If the problem is automatic connection
When a profile connects manually but does not start automatically, inspect its automatic-connection settings rather than assuming the similarly named entry is equivalent. Relevant behavior can include Always On, app or name-based triggers, and trusted-network detection. Windows may preserve a user’s disabled Always On preference by profile name, and trusted-network detection can suppress an automatic trigger in documented circumstances. Inspect profiles with PowerShell, if needed
An administrator or technically comfortable user can use Windows PowerShell to list VPN connections or inspect a specific profile by name:
Get-VpnConnection
Get-VpnConnection -Name "Profile Name"Replace Profile Name with the connection name shown in Windows. Microsoft documents these commands in its Windows VPN and EAP profile guidance. This helps inspect locally configured profiles; it does not verify an Intune assignment, so check the management service separately when the VPN is organization-deployed.

Move on to connection troubleshooting
Once you have confirmed the intended profile and, where applicable, its deployment, investigate the connection failure. Depending on the error, the next checks may include authentication, server reachability, DNS resolution, and certificates. Intune’s troubleshooting guidance includes domain-name resolution failures as one possible issue; that example does not establish that look-alike profiles caused the failure.
