Speaker wire carries an amplifier’s output to passive speakers. Choose it by checking the one-way cable-run length, speaker impedance, equipment terminals, and installation location; then connect positive to positive and negative to negative at both ends. There is no single gauge recommendation that applies to every system, so use the speaker and amplifier manuals alongside any sizing chart.
What speaker wire does
Speaker wire is generally a two-conductor cable that carries the amplified signal from a receiver or amplifier to passive speakers. Each conductor connects to a matching terminal: positive (+) and negative (−). A stripe, ridge, color, or other marking on one conductor helps you identify it consistently at both ends.

Speaker wire is not interchangeable with a powered speaker’s mains cord or with every other audio cable. Check whether the speaker is passive and what connection its manual specifies before choosing a cable.

Gauge selection depends principally on the one-way run length and the speaker’s impedance. American Wire Gauge (AWG) numbers work in reverse: a lower number means a thicker conductor. For the same material and length, a thicker conductor has lower resistance. Longer runs and lower-impedance loads make cable resistance more consequential, which is why the same gauge can have different recommendations for different systems.

Use the following charts as examples of manufacturer guidance, not universal limits. Their recommendations differ because they are made in specific contexts and may use different assumptions. Confirm your equipment’s own requirements before buying.

| Klipsch speaker-wire chart | Maximum 48 ft with an 8-ohm speaker; maximum 24 ft with a 4-ohm speaker | 16 AWG | Klipsch recommendation; publication date not stated. Its chart highlights the 8-ohm column because it says essentially all its speakers have 8-ohm nominal impedance. Source. |

Southwire likewise says gauge choice depends on system impedance, cable length, and power requirements. Its technical reference describes stranded wire as offering flexibility and larger surface area; for most home installations, the practical distinction is that stranded conductors bend more easily and can be simpler to route and fit into terminals. A practical way to decide
- Measure the route from amplifier to speaker, allowing enough length to follow the intended path without pulling the cable taut. Use the one-way run length when comparing it with a chart.
- Check the speaker’s nominal impedance and the amplifier or receiver manual for wiring and load guidance.
- Find a manufacturer’s gauge recommendation that covers both the length and impedance. If charts conflict, follow the equipment maker’s instructions or choose a thicker conductor within the terminals’ limits.
- Confirm the cable’s installation rating and that its conductor size works with the terminals or connectors you plan to use.
Does premium or oxygen-free copper wire sound better?
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that oxygen-free copper (OFC) or a premium-priced cable produces an audible improvement over other suitable copper speaker wire. Paradigm recommends shielded 12 AWG OFC for its systems and says not to use wire below 16 AWG; that is product-specific advice, not a requirement for every speaker system. Paradigm’s FAQ.
Compare cables on stated, practical specifications: gauge, length, conductor material, installation rating, and terminal compatibility. A sound-quality promise by itself does not tell you whether a cable is correctly sized or suitable for its route.

How to connect speaker wire safely
Bare wire is a straightforward option when the amplifier and speaker terminals accept it. Terminal designs vary, so use the manuals for the exact equipment. Klipsch’s procedure calls for powering off the receiver, stripping approximately 3/8 inch of insulation, twisting the exposed strands, and inserting them into the matching red and black terminals. Klipsch’s connection instructions.
- Turn off the amplifier or receiver before making connections.
- Cut the cable to length and separate the two conductors for a short distance at each end.
- Strip only enough insulation for the terminal, following the equipment instructions. Twist stranded copper neatly so no loose strands stick out.
- Connect the marked conductor to the positive (+) terminal at both the amplifier and speaker. Connect the other conductor to negative (−) at both ends. Red and black terminals commonly indicate positive and negative, but check the labels on your equipment.
- Tighten or secure each terminal as directed. Check that no bare strand can touch the neighboring terminal or chassis, then repeat the inspection at the other end.
Focal advises matching the amplifier’s positive output to the speaker’s positive terminal and the negative output to the negative terminal. Reversed polarity can impair stereo imaging and the perception of bass. Focal’s support guidance.

Audioengine’s P4 setup guide recommends at least 16 AWG for those speakers and equal cable lengths from amplifier to each speaker. These are recommendations for that product guide, not universal requirements for every setup. Audioengine P4 setup guide.

Where the cable will be installed
Indoor, exposed runs
For a typical indoor route, choose a cable with clearly stated conductor size and a jacket suitable for the way it will be routed. Keep it away from places where it could be crushed, cut, or pulled loose, and leave the polarity marking identifiable at both ends.
Outdoor or buried runs
Outdoor cable needs protection suited to exposure and the route. TIC recommends burial-grade speaker cable for outdoor installations or conduit to protect standard cable. TIC’s speaker-wire guidance. Belden lists speaker-cable options for commercial and professional installations, including direct-burial configurations. Belden speaker cable. Check the specific cable’s rating rather than assuming an indoor cable is suitable outdoors or underground.
In-wall runs
Before concealing cable in a wall, confirm that its stated rating is appropriate for the installation and check the requirements that apply in your location. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction and installation; a general product listing alone does not establish what is permitted where you live.
Final checks before powering up
- Each cable is connected to the intended speaker and amplifier output.
- Positive and negative polarity match at both ends.
- No loose copper strands can bridge adjacent terminals.
- The cable gauge, terminal fit, and installation rating suit the run and equipment.
- Connections are secure and the cable is not pinched or under tension.
Klipsch describes a polarity check using a 9-volt battery with the speaker disconnected from the amplifier or receiver; it says the woofer moves forward when polarity is correct. If you are unfamiliar with this method, use a commercially available polarity tester or consult the equipment documentation rather than improvising a battery connection. Klipsch’s polarity-check instructions.
