Software-defined flash aims to make storage easier to adapt as data-center workloads change, rather than forcing operators to manage a separate mix of devices for every performance profile or protocol. The Linux Foundation webinar “Multiple Workloads And Protocols: One Software-Defined Solution”, recorded June 22, 2021 and sponsored by KIOXIA, presented an open-source, multi-protocol approach to that problem. Its benefits were goals, not quantified results: the event page reports no benchmark or cost-savings measurement.
Why multiple workloads make storage harder to manage
Data-center demand shifts: workloads can grow, shrink, or appear, and their storage requirements differ. According to the Linux Foundation event page, operators may consequently need to manage an inventory of storage devices with different performance profiles and protocols. That variety can complicate deployment and day-to-day inventory management.
The webinar’s premise was to unify flash storage through an open-source, software-defined, multi-protocol solution. In practical terms, the idea is to use software to shape how flash storage serves varied workloads, instead of treating every workload’s needs as a reason to add and manage another specialized device. The event page describes this as an approach to simpler hyperscale flash deployment, better total cost of ownership, and less inventory-management burden; it does not quantify those benefits.

What software-defined flash means in this context
Software-defined flash is not simply a software layer that makes any ordinary SSD support every protocol. In the later Software-Enabled Flash (SEF) project context, KIOXIA described an open-source API and libraries paired with purpose-built, media-centric flash hardware. Its 2022 announcement said that hardware was based on PCIe and NVMe technology and positioned SEF as a way for developers to customize flash for data-center, application, and workload requirements: KIOXIA’s SEF sample hardware announcement.
The software and hardware are therefore part of the same concept: an interface and libraries provide ways for software to work with the flash, while the purpose-built hardware supplies the underlying storage. The sources do not identify a universal protocol list or explain the implementation mechanics in the 2021 webinar. “Multi-protocol” should be read as the webinar’s stated design aim, not as a promise that one device supports every protocol.

How SEF relates to the webinar
SEF provides later official context for the software-defined flash idea. In September 2023, the Linux Foundation announced that KIOXIA had donated a command set specification to the project, which it described as a vendor-agnostic, open-source effort focused on flash cloud storage: the Linux Foundation’s command-set announcement.
That project milestone helps explain the kind of open-source work behind software-enabled flash, but it does not establish that every SEF feature or detail appeared in the 2021 webinar’s demonstration. The webinar page itself identifies no protocols, implementation details, or test results.

Capabilities described for SEF—and what they do not prove
KIOXIA’s 2023 technical overview lists several SEF capability themes: data placement, workload isolation, latency control using advanced queuing, and multi-protocol capabilities. These are vendor-described features, not independently verified performance outcomes: KIOXIA’s technical overview.
- Data placement: control over where data is placed on flash is presented as a capability.
- Workload isolation: the overview identifies separating workloads as a capability theme.
- Latency control: KIOXIA describes control using advanced queuing; no latency measurement or test conditions are reported in the cited material.
- Multi-protocol support: this is described as a capability, but the overview does not supply a protocol list in the material cited here.
Those features may be relevant when assessing whether a design fits a data-center workload, but the cited pages do not establish a specific deployment’s compatibility, operating costs, or results.

What the hardware sample announcement establishes
In October 2023, the Linux Foundation reported KIOXIA SEF module samples available for evaluation, including an E1.L sample with 32 terabytes of capacity: the hardware-samples announcement. The 32-terabyte figure is the sample’s capacity, not a performance statistic. The announcement establishes sample evaluation availability at that time, not current retail stock or general availability.
