Nintendo recommends alkaline batteries generally; NiMH is the only rechargeable chemistry it recommends for the Wii Remote.
Which rechargeable batteries should you use?
The Wii Remote takes two AA batteries. Nintendo recommends alkaline batteries overall and says NiMH is the only type of rechargeable battery it recommends. Follow the battery maker’s safety and use instructions, and match the positive (+) and negative (−) ends to the markings inside the compartment. Nintendo’s Wii U troubleshooting guidance also advises avoiding unlicensed rechargeable packs, lithium-ion batteries, and nickel-cadmium batteries. That article addresses Wii U troubleshooting; it does not change the standard Wii Remote sync procedure described below.

Install the batteries before syncing
- Turn off the remote. Remove its jacket if needed to reach the battery cover.
- Open the battery compartment and insert two AA NiMH cells, putting the negative (−) end in first and matching each cell’s polarity to the compartment markings.
- Close the cover and replace the jacket. When removing cells, Nintendo says to take out the positive (+) end first.
Sync the remote with a Wii console
For the standard Wii procedure, the console’s red SYNC button is inside the SD Card Slot cover on its front. The remote’s red SYNC button is in its battery compartment. The instructions below are for Wii/Wii mini and Wii Remote hardware; console button locations can differ by model, so use the instructions for your specific console if they do not match.

- Turn on the Wii and open the SD Card Slot cover on the console.
- Remove the remote’s battery cover if necessary. Press and release the red SYNC button inside the remote’s battery compartment.
- While the player LEDs on the remote are blinking, quickly press and release the red SYNC button inside the console’s SD Card compartment.
- Wait for the LEDs to stop blinking. Syncing is complete when one player LED remains lit.
Repeat the button sequence for each additional remote. Nintendo’s full Wii Remote syncing instructions describe the same standard procedure.
If the remote will not sync
Rechargeable cells do not call for a different pairing method. If syncing fails, first confirm the NiMH cells are charged and installed in the correct direction, then repeat the sequence, pressing the console button promptly while the remote LEDs are blinking. Nintendo’s Wii Remote troubleshooting guidance also suggests checking the sensor bar’s connection and placement, possible infrared or radio-frequency interference, and whether an unlicensed remote or accessory is involved.

Check the battery level
To check a remote directly, remove its battery cover and press the red SYNC button. The player LEDs indicate battery strength: four flashing lights mean full strength; one means the lowest level. For a synced remote, you can also check its level in Wii Remote Settings from the HOME Menu. See Nintendo’s battery-level instructions.

How long should the batteries last?
Nintendo says a fresh set of alkaline batteries should last 20 to 30 hours, depending on speaker volume, rumble, battery quality and age, and the game being played. That estimate applies to alkaline batteries; Nintendo does not state the same runtime for NiMH rechargeables. Details are in its battery-drain guidance.
