Spatial computing is already here: it describes interfaces that place digital content in physical surroundings or immersive virtual environments, rather than limiting it to a flat screen. It is not one device category or another name for virtual reality (VR). Today’s systems span see-through augmented reality (AR), camera-passthrough mixed reality (MR), and fully immersive VR, with practical uses in work, design, training, education, and entertainment.
What spatial computing means
Spatial computing is an umbrella term for computing that understands or uses space as part of the interface. A system may map a room, anchor a digital object to a place, or let a person interact with 3D content using their hands, eyes, voice, or controllers. The degree to which the physical world remains visible varies by device and experience.

Microsoft describes mixed reality as a blend of physical and digital worlds that can involve spatial mapping, environmental understanding, human input, spatial sound, and collaboration around 3D assets. Apple’s visionOS likewise supports experiences that remain connected to a user’s surroundings, add 3D content, or shift into a fully immersive scene. These are examples of why spatial computing is best understood as an interaction approach, not a synonym for one headset or a single technology. Microsoft’s mixed-reality overview and Apple’s visionOS developer site describe those approaches.

How AR, MR, and VR fit
These labels describe different ways digital content and the physical environment can appear together. Their boundaries can vary across products, so the useful question is how a particular device presents the world and supports the task you want to do.

| Approach | What you see | Typical interaction |
|---|---|---|
| See-through AR | You look through transparent optics at the real environment, with digital objects overlaid. | Digital content can appear anchored in the surroundings; hand, eye, or voice input may be available, depending on the device. |
| Camera-passthrough MR | Cameras capture the physical environment and display it on screens inside the headset, where digital content can be integrated. | Virtual content can respond to features of the room. Meta describes Quest 3 and Quest 3S as mixed-reality-capable, with color passthrough and a dedicated depth sensor. Meta’s MR developer overview |
| Fully immersive VR | The headset blocks the direct view of the surroundings and presents a virtual scene. | Interaction takes place within the virtual environment; the experience may offer a transition back to views of the physical surroundings. |
Microsoft’s framework distinguishes see-through holographic devices from immersive devices that block the environment. Apple describes visionOS experiences that can move from a view connected to the room to a fully immersive scene. A device or platform may support more than one presentation style, so “AR,” “MR,” and “VR” do not always map neatly to separate hardware classes. Microsoft’s overview explains its distinction.
What spatial computing can do now
Arrange a virtual workspace
On Apple Vision Pro, visionOS supports movable app windows and 3D volumes in a shared space, as well as app-specific full spaces and immersive scenes. Apple describes using apps side by side at different scales, Microsoft 365, Teams meetings, collaboration, and data visualization. These are documented capabilities and examples, not independent evidence that a headset improves productivity. Apple’s workplace examples

Review designs and spatial data
Apple cites product design, retail planning, and construction modeling among Vision Pro work scenarios, and describes Porsche engineers visualizing vehicle and track data. Microsoft lists design review as a mixed-reality application. These examples show how teams can examine 3D objects or information in context; they do not establish a measured business outcome. Android XR and future hardware
In June 2026, Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon Reality Elite platform for premium spatial-computing experiences and said it would power Android XR devices, naming XREAL Project Aura as the first device. That is a vendor announcement about an ecosystem in development, not proof of broad availability or widespread adoption. Qualcomm’s announcement
How to decide whether a spatial headset suits you
Start with the task rather than the label. A headset designed around immersive games may not be the best fit for a persistent virtual workspace or guided repair, and an MR feature list alone does not show whether the relevant apps exist or work well for your needs.
- Choose the presentation style. Decide whether you need direct see-through optics, camera passthrough, or a fully immersive virtual scene. Consider how often you must see your surroundings while using the device.
- Match the device to the task. Identify whether your priority is gaming, large virtual workspaces, training, design review, education, or guided maintenance. Check that the apps and content for that task are available on the platform.
- Check input and tracking. Find out whether the experience relies on hand, eye, voice, controller, or other input, and whether its tracking features suit how you intend to work.
- Try fit and comfort in person if possible. Fit is personal, and the sources cited here do not provide an independent head-to-head comfort assessment. Pay attention to pressure, balance, visibility, and whether you can use the headset for the duration your task requires.
- Plan for power and mobility. Consider whether you will use the headset tethered, near a power source, or while moving around. Battery figures are manufacturer claims and do not substitute for a test under your own workload.
- For work, check privacy and management. Ask how the device handles room data, accounts, shared use, enterprise controls, and protected content. Confirm that the required policies and tools are supported before buying for a team.
- Verify current price and availability. They vary by region and can change. The platform sources cited here do not provide a current independent price comparison.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
For its M5 Vision Pro, Apple says the R1 chip processes input from 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones and streams new images to the displays within 12 milliseconds. Apple also claims up to 2.5 hours of general use or up to 3 hours of video playback on a charge, with actual duration varying by use. It says the M5 model’s micro-OLED displays render 10 percent more pixels than the previous generation. These are manufacturer specifications and comparisons, not independent tests of comfort, performance in every app, or user benefit. Apple Vision Pro specifications

Likewise, a new headset, a larger app catalog, or a platform announcement does not by itself establish how many people use spatial computing or whether it makes work more effective. The cited sources document capabilities and example deployments, but do not establish a market-wide adoption or effectiveness figure.
