Write Gherkin scenarios around business rules and outcomes—not buttons, selectors, or timing—and have the people responsible for those rules review them. In a Playwright workflow, Gherkin describes the behavior; step definitions connect that language to automation, and Playwright performs the browser actions and checks. These are separate layers, so using Playwright does not by itself mean you need Gherkin or Cucumber.
What BDD means—and what it does not
Behavior-driven development (BDD) is a team practice for discovering and agreeing on desired software behavior through concrete examples. Gherkin gives those examples a structured form that can be read by people and connected to automated checks. It is not simply a test-writing format or a test runner: the collaboration and discussion that establish what an example means are central to BDD. Cucumber describes BDD as discovery, collaboration, and examples.

A feature file can make an agreed example visible and repeatable, but readable syntax alone does not create shared understanding. If the product owner or business representative does not recognize the scenario as a faithful statement of a rule, the team has an automation artifact—not a useful shared specification.

Gherkin’s keywords each have a job: Given establishes relevant context, When names the action or event, and Then states the expected outcome. Keep the wording in the language people use to discuss the business behavior. Cucumber’s Gherkin reference advises avoiding assumptions about technology or the user interface.

Feature: Account access
Scenario: A registered customer signs in successfully
Given a registered customer has an active account
When the customer signs in with valid credentials
Then the customer sees their account overview
This example describes a customer and an observable result. It does not specify which field to click, what selector to find, or how long to wait. Those details belong in the automation implementation, not in the scenario’s business meaning.
Given: include only context the rule needs
Describe the starting condition that matters to the example, such as an active account. Avoid turning setup into a list of database operations, fixture names, or implementation states. If the business rule does not depend on a detail, the scenario usually does not need to expose it.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
When: name the meaningful action or event
State what the customer or system does in domain language. “The customer signs in with valid credentials” communicates the event. “Click the blue button” describes a particular interface and may become misleading when the interface changes while the rule remains the same.
Then: assert something a person could observe
State the expected result in terms that matter to the user or business, such as seeing an account overview. Avoid a hidden internal condition that a reader cannot interpret as an outcome. Cucumber’s guidance is to make a Then assertion about observable output.

Keep interface details in the automation layer
A useful separation is: feature text describes behavior; step definitions translate a step into executable work; Playwright drives the browser and checks what it displays. A step definition can contain navigation, locators, test data setup, and assertions without making those implementation choices part of the business-facing scenario.
For example, a step definition for “the customer signs in with valid credentials” can locate and fill the relevant fields and submit the form. The feature file need not mention a CSS selector such as #login-submit or a fixed delay such as “wait 500 milliseconds.” Such details couple a scenario to one interface implementation and make it harder for business readers to focus on the rule.

Not every technical detail must be hidden at all costs: the important test is whether it helps a reader understand the behavior being agreed. If a scenario’s purpose is specifically to verify an accessibility or browser-compatibility requirement, that requirement may need to be explicit. Otherwise, keep the scenario at the level of the behavior and put execution mechanics in code.

When a team is establishing its Gherkin vocabulary and style, collaborate on scenarios rather than handing them off as a technical writing task. Cucumber recommends working on the language together, and says a drafting pair can include someone responsible for automation and someone responsible for quality, with active review by a product owner or business representative. Cucumber’s collaboration guidance explains this shared approach.

- Ask a business representative to confirm that the example captures the intended rule and outcome.
- Have quality and automation contributors check that the scenario is specific enough to implement and verify.
- Use the review to clarify domain terms and edge cases before automating the example.
Review is not a final proofreading step: it is how the team catches different interpretations of words such as “active,” “eligible,” or “successful” before they become executable assumptions.

Playwright’s JavaScript and TypeScript package includes the Playwright Test runner, with browser fixtures and assertions for browser automation. Its official documentation describes that runner and its workflows for debugging, UI mode, and reporting. Playwright’s introduction covers the runner and browser testing; its configuration guide covers test configuration.
In a Gherkin setup, an additional step-definition layer connects feature text to automation code. Playwright then handles browser interactions and checks. The official documentation cited here establishes the roles of Gherkin and Playwright separately; it does not establish a particular official Playwright-Cucumber integration. Do not assume Playwright natively runs .feature files or treat an adapter as part of the Playwright runner.

Playwright also supports readable test names and steps in its native runner, so Gherkin is optional. A team can describe behavior directly in Playwright tests without maintaining separate feature files and step definitions. The relevant question is whether feature files will be used as shared specifications and actively reviewed—not whether the browser tests can be automated without them.
Choose Gherkin or Playwright’s native runner by team need
| Consideration | Gherkin with Playwright | Playwright’s native runner |
|---|---|---|
| Business stakeholder participation | Useful when nontechnical stakeholders will read and review feature files. | Can still use readable test names and steps, but does not require a separate Gherkin specification layer. |
| Scenario emphasis | Encourages examples phrased around domain rules when the team keeps interface mechanics in step definitions. | Can express behavior directly in tests; the team must still choose business-readable wording. |
| Automation structure | Requires step definitions to connect Gherkin phrases to browser actions and checks. | Uses Playwright Test’s own runner, fixtures, assertions, and test structure. |
| Maintenance and workflow | Adds a Gherkin integration layer to maintain; the reviewed sources do not establish a quantified cost or a specific current adapter recommendation. | Uses Playwright’s documented runner and debugging/reporting workflows without a separate Gherkin layer. |
There is no universal winner established by these differences. Choose Gherkin when its shared-specification role is real and business representatives will stay involved. Prefer the native runner when the team primarily needs browser automation and readable tests, without a separate audience or process for feature files.
Quick Recap
Common scenario-writing mistakes
- Writing a click script instead of a behavior: replace control-by-control narration with the user’s meaningful action and the business result.
- Putting selectors or timing in the feature: move locators, navigation, waits, and test setup into step definitions or supporting automation code.
- Making the outcome unobservable: state what a user or external system can see, rather than an unexplained internal implementation state.
- Assuming keywords do the collaboration: use the scenario to support discussion and review; the Given/When/Then format alone does not establish agreement.
- Adding Gherkin without an audience: if no business stakeholder reads or reviews feature files, assess whether the extra integration layer serves the team.
A practical review checklist
- Does the scenario describe a business example rather than a sequence of UI controls?
- Does each Given establish only context relevant to the rule?
- Does When name the meaningful action or event?
- Does Then state a result that can be observed and understood?
- Are selectors, waits, browser navigation, and implementation details kept out of the business-facing wording?
- Has a product owner or business representative reviewed the example’s meaning?
- Is there a clear reason to maintain Gherkin feature files in addition to Playwright tests?
