NVMe-oF vs. Local NVMe: Which Storage Setup Fits Your Needs?

NVMe over Fabrics carries NVMe commands between hosts and remote storage over Fibre Channel, RDMA, or TCP. Here’s how it works and differs from local NVMe.

NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) lets a host send NVMe storage commands to remote NVMe storage over a network fabric. It extends the NVMe command model beyond a local PCI Express connection, so storage can sit in a shared, centrally managed system rather than inside or directly attached to each host.

What is NVMe over Fabrics?

NVMe over Fabrics is a standards-based way to carry NVMe commands and data between a host and a remote NVMe storage target across a fabric. The host still uses the NVMe command model; a transport specification defines how that protocol operates over a particular fabric.

NVMe was originally designed for communication between host software and non-volatile memory over PCI Express (PCIe). NVMe-oF extends that operation across a network, allowing an NVMe-enabled host to access storage located elsewhere.

How is NVMe-oF different from local NVMe?

Aspect Local NVMe NVMe-oF
Storage location Attached to the host, typically over PCIe Located in a remote storage target or subsystem
Connection path Host-to-device connection Host-to-fabric-to-storage connection
What is needed A compatible host and local NVMe device A compatible host and target, plus a supported transport and fabric

Both can use NVMe, but they are not interchangeable deployment setups. A consumer NVMe SSD, generic network interface card, or cable alone does not provide an NVMe-oF connection.

Which transports can carry NVMe-oF?

The transport options identified by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) include Fibre Channel, RDMA, and TCP. RDMA implementations include InfiniBand, RoCE, and iWARP. These are distinct approaches, not synonyms for NVMe-oF itself.

Transport family Examples or description What to consider
Fibre Channel NVMe commands carried over a Fibre Channel fabric Fit with compatible host, target, and existing storage fabric
RDMA InfiniBand, RoCE, or iWARP Fit with the selected RDMA implementation and network topology
TCP NVMe commands carried over TCP Compatibility, operating requirements, and performance needs in the deployed network

SNIA notes that transports have different performance, availability, and scalability characteristics, making each suitable for different environments and topologies. There is no universally best option established here. Selection depends on compatibility, latency and performance requirements, resilience, scale, topology, and operational fit. Any claim that one transport is faster or easier should be tied to a specific implementation, configuration, and benchmark.

Why use NVMe over Fabrics?

NVMe-oF allows hosts to access storage that is centrally located and can make storage resources available to groups of hosts. That can help organizations manage capacity across systems instead of leaving it stranded in individual machines. The architecture is aimed at high-performance, low-latency storage access, but actual results depend on the transport and deployment; a universal performance figure does not apply.

How is NVMe-oF specified today?

NVMe-oF 1.0 was released in June 2016, and version 1.1 followed in 2019. NVM Express now integrates generic NVMe-oF operation into the NVMe Base specification. It identifies the former standalone NVMe-oF specification as a historical reference and says no further development of that standalone specification is planned; transport-specific specifications remain part of the NVMe specification family.

What a particular implementation can—and cannot—tell you

For example, NVIDIA’s MLNX_OFED v23.04-1.1.3.0 documentation describes NVMe-oF over Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and InfiniBand, and discusses tunneling through an RDMA fabric for high throughput and low latency. That is a vendor-specific implementation description, not a general benchmark or guarantee. Its stated NVMe-oF target offload support applies to ConnectX-5 adapter cards and above; this product boundary is not a protocol requirement.

How to choose a transport

  • Check that the host, target, and fabric support the same transport.
  • Match the choice to the required performance, latency, availability, and resilience.
  • Account for the topology and the scale of the storage environment.
  • Consider the skills, management practices, and network infrastructure already in place.
  • Use workload-specific benchmarks to compare actual implementations rather than assuming a transport is universally fastest.
