SpaceX is not simply a rocket-launch company: its June 2026 prospectus describes launch and development, Starlink connectivity and equipment, and AI. Publicly traded space companies such as Rocket Lab, Spire Global, Planet Labs, and Virgin Galactic pursue different businesses, from spacecraft manufacturing and satellite data to Earth imagery and human spaceflight. That means their risks—and the measures that help compare them—differ too.

This is a comparison of business models and company-disclosed risks, not a stock ranking. SpaceX’s prospectus discusses an offering, but the information available here does not establish its exchange listing or trading status.

What does each company sell?

The most useful starting point is what a company asks customers to pay for. A launch mission, a satellite-data subscription, and broadband service may all depend on spacecraft, but their customers, revenue drivers, and operating costs are not interchangeable.

Company Disclosed business model What to compare
SpaceX Launch and development; Starlink connectivity and equipment; and AI, as described in its June 2026 prospectus. Launch execution, connectivity and hardware economics, development spending, and risks tied to its offering and corporate structure.
Rocket Lab Launch services plus spacecraft design, components, manufacturing, optical systems, and on-orbit solutions. Launch cadence and vehicle development, space-systems mix, profitability, customer and contract concentration, and capital needs.
Spire Global Satellite-derived radio-frequency data, analytics, and space services. Its annual filing also reports the sale of its maritime business and elimination of debt. Demand for data and services, customer retention, constellation operations, and changes to the business portfolio.
Planet Labs Earth-observation imagery and analytics through a cloud platform, alongside satellite services and mission support. Demand for data and analytics, satellite operations, customer contracts, and infrastructure requirements.
Virgin Galactic Human spaceflight and research flights; its filing describes next-generation vehicles under development and commercial operations as paused. Vehicle development, flight cadence, consumer and research demand, capital intensity, and the ability to restart service.

SpaceX: launch, connectivity, and equipment

SpaceX’s prospectus groups its activities into Space, Connectivity, and AI segments. That scope makes it a broader comparison than a launch-only provider: it includes launch and development alongside an internet service business and its equipment. SpaceX says Starlink uses company-designed user terminals, and its prospectus includes Starlink Kit sales in Connectivity revenue. A kit is the equipment needed to connect to the network, typically a terminal and accessories; compatibility with a specific service plan or region should not be assumed.

As of March 31, 2026, SpaceX reported about 9,600 Starlink broadband and mobile satellites in low Earth orbit and about 10.3 million subscribers across 164 countries, territories, and other markets. These are issuer-reported prospectus figures with that specific as-of date, not independently verified counts.

Rocket Lab: launch plus space systems

Rocket Lab’s 2025 annual report describes a business that extends beyond launch services into spacecraft design and manufacturing, components, optical systems, and on-orbit solutions. Its results therefore should not be assessed as though all of its activity depended on selling launches alone. Investors comparing it with a launch-focused business need to distinguish revenue and costs by activity where the company reports them.

Spire and Planet Labs: selling data and analysis

Spire sells satellite-derived radio-frequency data, analytics, and related services. Planet Labs sells Earth-observation imagery and analytics delivered through a cloud platform, as well as satellite services and mission support. Both depend on functioning space infrastructure, but their customer proposition is data or analysis rather than simply access to a launch vehicle. Their exposure consequently includes demand for those products and the ability to operate and maintain the satellites and supporting systems that produce them.

Virgin Galactic: human spaceflight

Virgin Galactic’s disclosed focus is human spaceflight and research flights. Its filing describes next-generation vehicles in development and commercial operations as paused. Its business outlook therefore turns on developing vehicles and restarting service, as well as attracting consumer and research demand—not on selling satellite connectivity or Earth imagery.

What do the available figures show—and not show?

Company figures are most useful when the metric, period, and business scope match. The cited disclosures do not provide a like-for-like financial comparison across these companies, so the figures below illustrate selected operating scale and financial condition rather than a ranking.

  • Starlink scale: SpaceX reported about 10.3 million subscribers across 164 countries, territories, and other markets as of March 31, 2026. The prospectus also reported about 9,600 broadband and mobile satellites in low Earth orbit on that date.
  • Launch activity: SpaceX said it launched 11 of 12 National Security Space Launch medium- and heavy-lift missions in 2025 and all five U.S. crew and cargo missions to the International Space Station for NASA. These are company-selected activity measures in its June 2026 prospectus, not a comparable measure of all launch work or profitability.
  • Rocket Lab losses: Rocket Lab Corporation reported net losses of $198.2 million in 2025, $190.2 million in 2024, and $182.6 million in 2023 in its 2025 Form 10-K. The filing said it expected losses to continue for at least the next 12 months. These figures apply to Rocket Lab, not to the other companies in this comparison.

Revenue, subscriber counts, launches, and net income answer different questions. Before comparing financial results, check the reporting period, segment definitions, and what each figure measures. A company combining connectivity subscriptions and equipment sales has different revenue drivers and costs from one selling launch missions, imagery, or data services.

How do the companies’ risks differ?

Space businesses share exposure to technical failures and the harsh conditions of operating in space, but a common industry label does not make the risks identical. Each company’s filings emphasize risks relevant to its own model.

SpaceX: development, operations, and offering-related risks

SpaceX’s prospectus organizes risk discussion around its Space, Connectivity, and AI segments, as well as regulation, operations and industry conditions, corporate structure, and the offering. For the Space business, development and launch execution matter; for Connectivity, the risks also attach to operating the network and selling service and equipment. The prospectus states, “We expect Starship to commence payload delivery to orbit in the second half of 2026.” That is SpaceX’s expectation in its June 5, 2026 prospectus, not confirmation that the milestone occurred; the company said additional flight tests were still required.

Rocket Lab: execution, contracts, and profitability

Rocket Lab identifies challenges involving launch cadence and vehicle development, spacecraft and component reliability, growth and profitability, customers and government policies, regulation, capital, and space hazards such as debris and space weather. Its 2025 Form 10-K cautions: “We may never achieve or sustain profitability and may continue to incur significant losses going forward.” That warning is specific to Rocket Lab’s disclosed outlook.

Spire: demand, constellation operations, and infrastructure

Spire’s filing points to risks including market acceptance and demand, losing customers, satellite production and launch, reliance on third-party infrastructure, capital requirements, and continued technology development. For a data business, a working constellation is necessary but not sufficient: customers also need to keep buying the resulting data and services.

Planet Labs: satellite operations and demand for imagery

Planet Labs’ model exposes it to satellite operations, demand for data and analytics, customer contracts, and infrastructure needs. These are not the same risks as those faced by a launch provider: an imagery business must produce and deliver useful data and sustain customer demand, rather than primarily selling vehicle launches.

Virgin Galactic: vehicle development and restarting service

Virgin Galactic’s filing describes losses, vehicle development, a planned service restart and flight cadence, and uncertainty in forecasting commercial spaceflight operations. Its ability to resume flights and sustain operations is central to the business case, while the timing and pace of that activity remain uncertain in the filing.

How should readers compare the businesses?

Choose a comparison based on the exposure you want to understand, then examine disclosures from the same reporting period and at the same level of detail.

  1. Separate the revenue engines. Identify whether the company sells launches, connectivity and equipment, spacecraft systems, data and analytics, or human spaceflight. For a diversified business, note which activities are reported as separate segments.
  2. Match the operating measure to the business. Launch cadence can inform a launch business; subscribers and equipment sales relate to connectivity; demand and contracts matter for data companies; vehicle development and flight cadence are central to Virgin Galactic. No single activity metric captures financial performance across all five.
  3. Read the risk disclosures alongside the business description. Look for development and reliability risks, customer or government dependence, capital needs, regulation, and hazards of operating satellites or spacecraft. Which risks matter most depends on how the company earns revenue.
  4. Keep issuer expectations separate from completed results. Treat projected milestones as forecasts attributed to the company, and use an explicit as-of date for operating statistics. Do not present company-selected comparisons as independently verified outcomes.
  5. Check the period and definition before comparing financial figures. Annual results, segment figures, and differently defined metrics cannot be put side by side responsibly without explaining their scope and reporting periods.

What does this comparison mean for a potential investor?

“Space company” is too broad to function as an investment thesis by itself. SpaceX’s prospectus combines launch and development with Starlink connectivity and equipment and an AI segment; the public-company examples here range from launch and spacecraft systems to satellite data, imagery, and human spaceflight. The central question is which business—and which combination of technical, customer, financial, and regulatory risks—you are evaluating. This comparison describes company disclosures and is not an investment recommendation.
