For a regular ChatGPT account, OpenAI does not document an account lookup or setting that confirms whether your text is watermarked. Its current guidance says text watermarking is being implemented for ChatGPT users in the EU, but coverage can vary by product, model, output, export path and when the content was created. API customers have separate opt-in controls; those do not apply to ChatGPT consumer accounts.
For the latest rollout details, consult OpenAI’s provenance guidance. It describes the rollout, but does not offer an individual ChatGPT account checker.

Can you check whether your ChatGPT account is covered?
Not through a documented ChatGPT consumer setting or eligibility checker. OpenAI says it is implementing text watermarking for ChatGPT users in the EU, but that does not establish that every EU account, model or answer is covered. Availability may depend on the product and model, the output or export path, and when the text was created.

#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
ChatGPT accounts and API accounts have different controls
| Account type | What OpenAI documents | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT consumer account | Text watermarking is being implemented for ChatGPT users in the EU. No consumer-facing account checker or watermark toggle is documented. Coverage varies; see OpenAI’s provenance guidance. | Check the live guidance for rollout information. You cannot confirm coverage for your particular account from a ChatGPT setting. |
| OpenAI API project | API customers can opt in for supported models through project settings. The available model list is shown there. | Use Project Settings → Text provenance, enable “Allow text watermarking,” select available model(s), then save. |
| OpenAI API organization | Organization-wide defaults can be configured in organization settings. | Use Organization settings → Data controls → Text provenance, enable “Allow text watermarking,” select available model(s), then save. |
The API controls are for API use, not regular ChatGPT conversations. Watermarking is opt-in for API customers, and enabling it does not automatically grant access to OpenAI’s detector.
Can you test a piece of text yourself?
OpenAI’s detector is not generally available for anyone to paste text into and check. Organizations with qualifying uses, such as academic or research work on provenance and detection reliability, may apply for access; applications are reviewed case by case.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
When available, the detector checks whether a passage follows a secret pattern more often than chance would predict. A detected signal suggests an OpenAI model likely generated or processed the text, but it is a provenance signal—not a definitive authorship verdict. It cannot identify who used the model, establish ownership or accuracy, determine legal responsibility, or measure how much a person contributed.
Why a detector may miss a watermark
- The passage is short: it may not contain enough evidence for reliable detection.
- It is code or tightly constrained text: code has fewer plausible next-token choices, and factual or exact-reproduction tasks also constrain wording. OpenAI says the EU AI Act Code of Practice does not require watermarking in outputs under 200 tokens—about 150 words in English—or in code snippets. This rule does not mean that all longer prose will be watermarked or detectable.
- The language affects detection: results vary across languages. In OpenAI’s 2026 evaluation, which used 500 synthetic English prompts translated into the other 23 official EU languages, detection rates at a 1% false-positive rate ranged from 42.2% for Romanian to 69.0% for Spanish. OpenAI says it adjusted watermark strength for languages below 60%; those adjustments are reflected in the chart’s light-blue portions. These are results for that evaluation setup, not a guarantee for a particular text.
- The text has changed: rewriting, paraphrasing or translation can weaken the signal. Keeping the original wording may preserve it, but does not guarantee detection.
- The product, model or export path is not covered: OpenAI lists unsupported products or models, missing signals and degraded signals among possible reasons detection may be absent.
For those reasons, a result of “not detected” does not prove that a person wrote the text or that it did not come from OpenAI.

Why asking ChatGPT is not a reliable check
Asking ChatGPT whether it wrote a passage does not verify its origin. OpenAI says ChatGPT has no knowledge of what content could be AI-generated or what it generated. A self-report is not a substitute for a provenance detector.
OpenAI also cautions that provenance signals do not guarantee content is “accurate, unedited, legally owned, or presented in the correct context.” Read a detector result narrowly: it may provide information about origin, but it does not settle authorship or the text’s reliability.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
What to check in practice
- If you use ChatGPT: consult the current OpenAI provenance article for rollout information relevant to your region and product. It cannot confirm coverage of a particular consumer account or response.
- If you use the API: open the project or organization text provenance settings and check which models are currently listed as available before enabling the option.
- If you need detector access: review OpenAI’s eligibility information and application process for qualifying organizations. API watermarking settings alone do not provide detector access.
- If you have a text result: consider its length, language, subject and editing history, and treat detection as a signal rather than proof. A negative result does not establish human authorship.
