SpaceX has the broader publicly documented launch-service portfolio, while Blue Origin’s New Glenn is a heavy-lift competitor with a larger fairing. Which is the better fit depends on the destination, payload and launch configuration. Public information does not support a like-for-like comparison of current per-launch prices or realized operating costs.
Which launch vehicles do SpaceX and Blue Origin offer?
Comparing the companies means comparing specific vehicles and services, not treating each provider as a single rocket. NASA lists Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy and Starship services for SpaceX, and New Glenn for Blue Origin. That establishes access to NASA procurement pathways; it does not mean every listed vehicle or planned mission is operationally available in the same way.

SpaceX: Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy and Starship
NASA describes Falcon 9 as a reusable, two-stage rocket for carrying people and payloads into Earth orbit and beyond. Falcon Heavy combines three Falcon 9 cores; NASA says it can lift nearly 64 metric tons to orbit. NASA added Starship to SpaceX’s Launch Services II offerings in 2025 and describes Starship/Super Heavy as a fully reusable transportation system designed for crew and cargo missions to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Those are design and contract-availability descriptions, not proof that every planned Starship mission is available today. See NASA’s Launch Services Program and its Starship contract announcement.

Blue Origin: New Glenn
NASA classifies New Glenn as a heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle. Its description specifies seven BE-4 first-stage engines and a first stage designed for a minimum of 25 flights; that is a design target, not a record of completed reuses. Blue Origin describes the vehicle as having a reusable first stage, two restartable BE-3U second-stage engines and a seven-meter fairing. The fairing is a useful payload-envelope distinction: Blue Origin says it has twice the volume of smaller five-meter-class fairings. A larger fairing can accommodate some large or multi-payload spacecraft, but does not by itself establish a lower mission price. NASA’s vehicle listing is on its Launch Services Program; Blue Origin’s return-to-flight update is here.

How do payload capacity and fairings compare?
Payload capacity depends on destination and vehicle configuration. A maximum figure for low Earth orbit (LEO) is not interchangeable with a figure for geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), and neither tells you whether a specific payload fits inside the fairing.
| Service or vehicle | Published capacity or feature | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Falcon 9 | 22,000 kg to LEO; 8,300 kg to GTO; 4,020 kg to Mars | SpaceX’s capability sheet says these are maximum-performance figures for a fully expendable vehicle. SpaceX capability sheet. |
| Falcon Heavy | Nearly 64 metric tons to orbit | NASA’s Launch Services Program figure; it is not a direct comparison to a destination-specific figure in another row. NASA. |
| New Glenn | 45 metric tons to LEO; more than 13 metric tons to GTO | NASA’s published capacities. The seven-meter fairing is a separate envelope consideration. NASA. |
For a real mission, compare the target orbit, payload mass and dimensions, required configuration, and mission-specific constraints. A headline lift number alone cannot determine which rocket can carry a particular spacecraft or what that launch would cost.
What is publicly known about launch prices?
SpaceX publishes a qualified Falcon 9 price reference; the reviewed official Blue Origin material does not provide a directly comparable public New Glenn list price. That makes it impossible to conclude from these figures that one provider is definitively cheaper.

| Service | Public price information | What the figure does—and does not—mean |
|---|---|---|
| Falcon 9 | $74 million standard payment plan through 2026 for up to 5.5 metric tons to standard GTO | SpaceX’s published figure is tied to that destination, payload limit and payment plan; it does not price every mission or configuration. The capability sheet says its performance figures represent a fully expendable vehicle. SpaceX capability sheet. |
| New Glenn | Not stated in the reviewed official material | No like-for-like public New Glenn per-launch price is established by the cited sources. |
Even a published launch price is not necessarily the total cost for a buyer’s mission. The sources do not provide common, comparable figures for mission-specific integration, refurbishment, reuse cadence or realized cost per launch, so a cost-per-kilogram or lifecycle-cost ranking would be unsupported.
How do the companies sell launch services to government customers?
NASA’s Launch Services II framework
NASA’s multi-award Launch Services II (NLS II) contract lets eligible providers compete for future missions and allows additional services to be added. NASA says the ordering period runs through June 2030 and the overall performance period through December 2032. These dates describe the contract framework, not a promise of a particular launch award.
On September 29, 2026, NASA added New Glenn 9×4 to NLS II for potential future NASA missions. NASA’s announcement says the service will be available for its Launch Services Program to use; it does not report a completed flight, demonstrate a separate performance figure for that service, or announce a mission award. U.S. national-security launches
The U.S. Space Force’s April 2025 NSSL Phase 3 Lane 2 announcement lists anticipated contract values of $5,923,580,297 for SpaceX and $2,386,234,812 for Blue Origin. These are anticipated values for firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery requirements contracts covering tasking over a contract period—not single-launch prices, guaranteed sales, profit, or evidence that one provider is more cost-efficient. The announcement does not establish which future tasking will result in launches for either provider. Space Systems Command’s award announcement.
What does rocket reuse tell buyers about the business model?
Both providers describe reusable hardware as part of their vehicle designs: Falcon 9 is described by NASA as reusable, and Blue Origin describes New Glenn’s first stage as reusable. Reuse can be relevant to a provider’s service model, but design intent alone does not establish how often a stage has flown, how much refurbishment it requires, or how much money reuse saves.
Neither the public price reference nor the contract announcements provide comparable operating data for reuse frequency, refurbishment expense, launch cadence or margins. Those gaps mean public evidence can support a comparison of procurement access, vehicle features and stated prices, but not a reliable comparison of realized launch economics.

Is New Glenn ready to compete for launches now?
Readiness is a time-sensitive part of a launch-service decision. Blue Origin reported a significant New Glenn integrated-vehicle hotfire anomaly at Launch Complex 36 on May 28, 2026. In its subsequent update, the company said the lightning tower, transporter-erector and hydraulic cylinders were lost; it described cleanup as complete and major repairs and operational planning as in progress.
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp said the company intended to return to flight “by the end of this year.” That was the company’s stated target in its 2026 update, not confirmation that the target was met. As of October 7, 2026, the cited update establishes the target and recovery work, not the outcome of any later return-to-flight attempt. Blue Origin’s New Glenn Return to Flight update.

How should a launch buyer compare the two providers?
Start with the mission requirement rather than the company name. These checks help avoid treating a payload maximum, fairing size, contract award or reuse goal as a complete answer:
- Destination: Identify the target orbit or trajectory, then compare capacity for that destination rather than relying on LEO figures alone.
- Payload envelope: Check both mass and spacecraft dimensions; fairing volume can matter even when a rocket has sufficient lift capacity.
- Vehicle and configuration: Specify Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Starship, New Glenn or New Glenn 9×4. Do not assume values for one configuration apply to another.
- Readiness and assurance: Check the vehicle and site status relevant to the required launch window. Contract eligibility is not the same as a confirmed mission slot.
- Commercial terms: Request a mission-specific proposal. The available public price reference is not a universal quote, and government contract totals are not per-launch prices.
- Reuse economics: Ask for evidence relevant to the proposed mission, such as the stage’s flight history and refurbishment plan, rather than inferring savings from a reusable design.
Which is the better choice?
There is no evidence-based universal winner. SpaceX has more vehicle types documented in NASA’s current launch-services portfolio and a public, though narrowly qualified, Falcon 9 price reference. New Glenn offers a stated 45-metric-ton LEO capacity and seven-meter fairing, and NASA has made its 9×4 service available through NLS II. The right comparison is the mission-specific combination of destination, payload envelope, configuration, readiness and contract terms—not a company-wide price or reliability ranking that public evidence does not establish.
