How to Reduce Wind Noise and Improve Call Quality with Open-Ear Earbuds

Wind can affect what you hear and what your caller hears in different ways. Use these model-aware checks to troubleshoot open-ear earbud calls.

Wind can affect an open-ear earbud call in two different ways: you may hear it around your ears, and it may hit the earbuds’ microphones so the person on the other end hears it. Start by checking fit and microphone openings, then look for a model-specific wind-reduction control. If wind still spoils an important call, move somewhere sheltered.

First, identify whose audio has the wind problem

If you hear wind but your caller does not, the issue is mainly what reaches your ears. Open-ear designs do not seal the ear canal, so some surrounding sound can remain audible. A noise-control mode may also affect how prominent that sound seems.

If your caller hears rushing, muffled speech, or interruptions, wind may be reaching the microphones. That is separate from what you hear: a setting that changes listening noise does not necessarily clean up the microphone signal sent to the other person.

ANC and call noise cancellation do different jobs

Active noise cancellation (ANC) and ambient-awareness modes affect the sound you hear. Call noise cancellation processes sound picked up on your side to help the other person hear your voice. Huawei explains this distinction in its earbud wind-noise guidance. A change to ANC may help your listening experience, but it is not a guaranteed fix for what your caller hears.

Work through these checks in order

  1. Reposition the earbuds as directed for your model. Check the fit instructions in the maker’s app or support guide. Huawei says that, for applicable models, a snug fit can affect wind pickup and noise-control performance. Open-ear earbuds are not meant to create a fully airtight ear-canal seal, so some wind may still be audible.
  2. Check the microphones and sound openings. Look for dust or debris around microphone openings, mesh grilles, and vents. Clean them gently and only as the manufacturer’s care instructions allow. Bose notes that wind entering a microphone capsule can make other audio unintelligible, and advises checking microphone openings and mesh grilles in its microphone troubleshooting guide.
  3. Look for a dedicated wind-reduction control. Check the companion app and the product’s call or noise-control settings. Soundcore says its Wind Noise Cancellation setting reduces front-microphone gain when wind is detected, including during calls; whether the setting exists and how it behaves depends on the model. See Soundcore’s wind-noise instructions.
  4. Try switching off ANC or ambient-awareness processing. If wind is especially noticeable to you, turn off the active noise-control mode and compare. Huawei and Sony describe situations where microphones used for these modes can pick up wind; Sony recommends trying available wind-reduction settings or turning the modes off if needed. The change may affect what you hear and is not a universal remedy for the caller’s audio. Sony’s wind-noise guidance is written for the listed Sony products, so check your own model’s instructions.
  5. Move out of the wind for a critical call. Step indoors or behind a solid windbreak. Reducing the airflow at the microphone is a direct way to address wind pickup; Bose includes a sheltered location among its microphone troubleshooting recommendations.
  6. Check for updates and model-specific guidance. If the problem continues in different settings, consult the manufacturer’s support page and check whether the earbuds have a firmware update. Persistent wind pickup alone does not establish that the hardware is defective.

Open-ear examples with manufacturer-described wind handling

Some open-ear models are marketed with microphone features intended to help in windy conditions. Those descriptions explain what the manufacturers claim, not which product performs best in a comparable independent call test.

Model Manufacturer-described call or wind feature What the claim establishes
Nothing Ear (open) Nothing says its two microphones use Clear Voice Technology to help keep calls clear from wind and traffic. The company says the technology was trained on over 28 million real-world scenarios. This is a Nothing product claim, not an independently verified performance result. Nothing’s product page
JBL Sense Pro JBL’s product sheet describes a wind-resistant design intended to reduce airflow disturbance around the microphone pickup area during calls. This is a JBL product-sheet claim, not comparative testing. JBL Sense Pro product sheet

These descriptions do not provide a shared test method or comparable call samples, so they are not enough to rank the two models. When evaluating any open-ear earbuds for calls, compare their wearing style and fit, where the microphones sit and how they are protected, whether wind reduction is adjustable, and whether a control changes listening ANC or microphone processing.

When a boom microphone may be a better fit

If reliable voice pickup in noisy or windy surroundings matters more than an open-ear design, consider a headset with a boom microphone. Jabra notes that true-wireless microphones sit in the ears rather than close to the mouth and may have more difficulty with voice pickup or noise filtering in some situations than a boom arm or cord microphone. Its explanation of how its true-wireless earbuds reduce ambient noise provides that comparison.
