If you want to start solving right away, try a quick crossword: its clues usually point to answers through direct definitions or synonyms, with little special technique to learn. If decoding wordplay sounds more fun than a low learning curve, start with a beginner-friendly cryptic instead of a full-difficulty puzzle. The Guardian recommends its smaller Quick Cryptic and also points beginners to gentler series such as Quiptic, Everyman and Monday cryptics.
What is the difference between a quick and a cryptic crossword?
A quick crossword clue generally leads to an answer through a direct definition or a synonymous word or phrase. CZD Crosswords says you do not need special knowledge or skills to attempt one. That makes quick crosswords a straightforward place to begin, though individual clues can still involve unfamiliar vocabulary or references.

A cryptic clue combines a definition with wordplay. The clue’s wording may instruct you to rearrange, combine, reverse, contain or otherwise manipulate letters. Common devices include anagrams, charades, containers, reversals, homophones, double definitions and hidden words. Indicator words can signal what operation to try. Ideally, the definition and wordplay independently point to the same answer, giving you a way to check your solution.

Quick crosswords have less decoding to learn, so they are usually the easier first attempt. But “quick” does not guarantee easy: difficulty varies by puzzle and setter, and a direct clue can still depend on obscure vocabulary or a reference you do not know.

Cryptics require you to learn how clues encode instructions as well as definitions. They need not be daunting, however. A smaller grid, familiar clue devices, explanations and crossing letters can make a cryptic more approachable. Difficulty depends on the particular puzzle, not just whether it is labelled quick or cryptic.
How to choose your first crossword
| What you want | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| To begin with minimal instruction | Quick crossword | Clues generally use direct definitions or synonyms rather than requiring you to decode wordplay. |
| To work out how words are constructed | Beginner cryptic | You can practise interpreting wordplay alongside the definition. |
| More guidance while learning cryptics | Quick Cryptic or Quiptic | The Guardian recommends these as gentler options; its Quick Cryptic identifies the tricks being used. |
| A gentler traditional cryptic | Everyman or a Monday cryptic | The Guardian describes these as beginner-friendlier series than jumping straight into a full-difficulty puzzle. |
The choice is about what you enjoy as much as what seems easiest. If the satisfaction of cracking a wordplay instruction is the draw, a supported beginner cryptic may be a better first puzzle than a quick crossword.

How to learn cryptic clues without getting stuck
- Look for a possible definition. It is often at one end of the clue, though you should treat that as a useful starting point rather than a rigid rule.
- Inspect the remaining words. Look for an indicator that suggests an operation such as rearranging letters, reversing them or hiding them inside other words.
- Test the wordplay. Work through the instruction and see whether it produces a plausible answer.
- Check both routes. The answer should fit the definition and the wordplay, and it should agree with the crossing letters already in the grid.
- Use help as a learning aid. A dictionary, a solver’s blog, explanations supplied with the puzzle, or another person can help you understand a device you have not seen before.
The Guardian’s Alan Connor recommends solving with someone else: “The best way is to solve with a friend or family member, in person or on the other end of a messaging thread.” You can also learn by concentrating on one device at a time rather than trying to memorise every kind of cryptic clue at once. The Guardian’s beginner’s guide discusses using crossing letters and learning with help; its current guide to solving cryptics covers beginner-friendly options and clue tricks.
