SpaceX Stock vs. Rocket Lab: Key Differences for Investors in 2026

SpaceX and Rocket Lab are both public, but their business mixes, operating milestones, financial disclosures and investor risks differ substantially.

SpaceX and Rocket Lab are both publicly traded as of October 7, 2026, but they offer exposure to different businesses and risks. SpaceX (SPCX) combines launch operations with satellite connectivity and other growth initiatives. Rocket Lab (RKLB) reports two operating segments—space systems and launch services—and is developing its medium-lift Neutron rocket. Investors comparing them should look beyond the “space stock” label to business mix, operating maturity, financial periods, capital needs and voting rights.

Are SpaceX and Rocket Lab publicly traded?

Yes. SpaceX completed its initial public offering in June 2026, and its Class A shares began trading under the ticker SPCX. Rocket Lab is listed under RKLB. Older articles describing SpaceX as private are out of date.

SpaceX’s IPO involved 638.9 million Class A shares offered at $135 each, with net proceeds of $85.675 billion, according to its SEC filing. Those are historical IPO details, not a current share price or a measure of what the company is worth today. SpaceX’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 describes the share structure and company risks.

How to buy SpaceX stock or Rocket Lab stock

Because both are listed equities, investors can look for SPCX or RKLB through a brokerage that offers access to the relevant exchange and share class. Availability, fees, account requirements and order types depend on the brokerage and the investor’s location. Check the ticker and security details in the account before placing an order; this article does not recommend a broker or a particular investment.

What businesses do the two companies operate?

Comparison SpaceX (SPCX) Rocket Lab (RKLB)
Business mix Launch and satellite connectivity, alongside other growth initiatives described in its SEC filing. Two reported operating segments: space systems and launch services.
Established activity highlighted in the filings Launch and connectivity activities; planned or developing initiatives should not be treated as established revenue. Electron launch services and existing spacecraft and space-systems activity.
Major vehicle development point The filing describes growth initiatives and capital spending across segments; it does not make every ambitious plan an operating business. Neutron, a medium-lift rocket still under development.

SpaceX is not simply a launch company: connectivity is part of its business mix, and its filing discusses additional growth efforts. That breadth can create more than one source of activity, but plans and investment do not automatically translate into proven revenue or returns.

Rocket Lab should not be treated as launch-only either. Its 2025 Form 10-K reported $402.8 million in space systems revenue and $199.0 million in launch services revenue, out of $602 million total revenue for 2025. Space systems was the larger segment that year. Rocket Lab completed 21 launch missions in 2025, compared with 16 in 2024; launch services revenue rose 59% year over year. These are full-year 2025 results, not current-quarter figures. SpaceX’s June 2026 Form 10-Q and Rocket Lab’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 describe the companies’ businesses; Rocket Lab’s 2025 Form 10-K provides the annual segment and launch figures.

How do their reported financial figures compare?

Use like periods and like measures. Annual revenue, quarterly revenue, backlog, IPO proceeds and net loss answer different questions; they cannot be substituted for one another or used alone to compare company value.

Rocket Lab’s $2.36 billion backlog at Q2 2026 is a measure of contracted work, not cash already received or revenue guaranteed on a fixed schedule. The company also reported more than $437 million in new launch contracts across Electron, HASTE and Neutron during Q2 and after quarter-end, and a launch backlog of more than 90 missions. These are company-reported contract and backlog figures; timing and conversion into revenue depend on performance and delivery. See Rocket Lab’s Q2 2026 earnings release filed with the SEC.

What are the main execution and capital risks?

Rocket Lab: Neutron schedule and development

Neutron may broaden Rocket Lab’s launch offering if it reaches operation, but it remains a development program rather than an established operating product. In its Q2 2026 filing, Rocket Lab said it was targeting delivery of the first-stage tank to the launch pad in Q4 2026. The company also said the launch window was narrowing and that qualification and other critical tests could affect timing. Treat Q4 2026 as management’s target, not a confirmed launch date. The filing cautions: “Risk and uncertainty remains in the complex development cycle of a new launch vehicle which could impact our current best estimate of a targeted timeline for first launch.” Rocket Lab’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q discusses the schedule; its 2025 Form 10-K describes how vehicle development and production can affect results.

SpaceX: growth spending and reported losses

SpaceX’s SEC filing describes substantial growth initiatives and the possibility of adjusting capital spending across segments. For investors, that means evaluating not only the breadth of the business but also how much capital its plans require and how execution affects results. The reported 2025 and Q1 2026 losses provide period-specific context, but do not establish what later results will be.

Risks common to both

  • Contracts and backlog require delivery and may convert into revenue on a schedule that differs from expectations.
  • Complex launch and spacecraft programs can face technical, testing, production and timing challenges.
  • Heavy investment can put pressure on cash needs and financial results before a program reaches scale.
  • A capable company can still be an unattractive investment if its share price is too high relative to its prospects.

How do ownership and voting rights differ?

SpaceX’s filing describes multiple share classes with different voting rights. Owning publicly traded Class A shares does not necessarily confer voting power proportional to the number of shares held, and public ownership should not be confused with voting control. Review the company’s current filings for the rights attached to each class. SpaceX’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q is the primary source for its disclosed share structure.

Which stock fits an investor’s thesis?

There is no evidence here that either stock is automatically the better investment. The comparison depends on the kind of exposure an investor wants and the price paid for it.

  • Consider the business mix: SpaceX combines launch and connectivity activity with other growth initiatives; Rocket Lab has disclosed revenue from both space systems and launch services.
  • Separate current operations from future milestones: Rocket Lab’s Electron and space-systems activity are distinct from Neutron’s development risk. Likewise, SpaceX initiatives should not be valued as established economics solely because they are planned.
  • Compare financials on matching dates: Put annual figures beside annual figures and quarterly figures beside quarterly figures. Do not treat Rocket Lab backlog as revenue or SpaceX IPO proceeds as operating performance.
  • Assess risk and governance: Consider Rocket Lab’s vehicle qualification and schedule exposure, SpaceX’s capital-intensive growth and reported losses, and SpaceX’s differing share-class voting rights.
  • Use current valuation data before deciding: A valuation comparison needs fresh share prices, share counts and financial periods. IPO proceeds, backlog and one year of revenue do not establish fair value.

This is a company comparison, not personalized investment advice. Whether either security suits an investor depends on that person’s goals, risk tolerance, time horizon and valuation analysis.
