Soulslike combat usually rewards patience, careful timing, and reading an opponent before committing to an attack. Character-action combat more often emphasizes expressive offense: chaining varied moves, improvising, and keeping the fight moving. That is a useful starting point, not a strict genre rule. To compare games, look at what their combat asks you to do—not just how fast or difficult it feels.
What the labels mean
“Soulslike” is a flexible label associated with the design and reception of FromSoftware’s Souls games. It often points to deliberate combat, readable enemy patterns, and a cost for mistiming an action. It does not guarantee a particular stamina system, dodge, parry, build structure, or defensive toolkit. FromSoftware has changed mechanics across its games, as Hidetaka Miyazaki discusses in a PlayStation.Blog interview.

“Character-action” is also a broad descriptive label, not a formal specification. Devil May Cry is a familiar example; its developer interview describes combat as central to the series. A useful general distinction is what the game most encourages: Soulslikes tend to reward restraint and responding to an opponent, while character-action games tend to foreground expressive attack sequences. Neither description applies identically to every game.

How the combat approaches differ

These are comparison points, not a standardized taxonomy. Individual games mix or reshape them; differences in mobility, defense, and title-specific tools matter as much as the genre label.

Why Sekiro is a boundary case
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice shares a developer and audience history with the Souls games, but it is misleading to describe its combat as simply “Dark Souls at a different speed.” In an August 21, 2018 Game Informer interview, Miyazaki said, “Sekiro is not a continuation of the Soulsborne series, so we have created a brand-new combat system specifically for this game.”
Its creators also highlighted how its mobility and tools shape play. Producer Yasuhiro Kitao described the protagonist as more agile and mobile than characters in earlier FromSoftware titles, and pointed to prosthetic tools and Combat Arts as ways to change tactics against different enemies in a March 13, 2019 PlayStation.Blog interview. In a separate Activision interview, Kitao described the battle system, setting, story, characters, and mechanics as unique to the game. That is a statement about design intent; it does not mean Sekiro has no family resemblance to Souls.

Robert Conkey, Sekiro producer, likewise said that while the Dark Souls games were probably best categorized as Action RPGs, Sekiro felt like a different type of game in an Xbox Wire interview published March 19, 2019. Taken together, these comments make Sekiro a useful reminder that a studio can retain an audience for challenging, readable action while substantially changing movement, defense, and tools.

Instead of judging by difficulty or speed alone, ask what the combat consistently rewards:

- Action commitment: Do attacks and dodges create meaningful vulnerability or recovery, or can you readily extend a sequence?
- Defensive choices: Does success depend on reading an enemy and responding with a well-timed defense, or does offense dominate the rhythm?
- Player expression: Does the game mainly let you tailor a tactical approach through weapons, builds, and tools, or emphasize improvising with a broad set of attacks?
- Fight rhythm: Are you usually waiting for and using short openings, or sustaining action across several moves or targets?
A game can land between the tendencies or combine them. These questions describe the experience more accurately than treating either label as a checklist every title must satisfy.
