It can give incorrect information confidently and may fabricate citations, so verify every consequential deadline, requirement, aid detail, or offer with the college or government agency responsible for it.
Is ChatGPT’s college advice accurate?
It may be useful for explanations and planning, but a plausible answer is not proof that a fact is correct. OpenAI cautions that ChatGPT can be wrong even when it sounds confident and can produce fabricated citations or references. Its guidance is to check important information against reliable sources: OpenAI’s explanation of ChatGPT’s reliability.

For admissions, the right source depends on the claim. The individual college controls its admissions requirements and decisions; Federal Student Aid provides federal student-aid guidance; and state agencies set state-aid details. Ask ChatGPT for the source it used, including the page title and date, but open that page yourself and confirm that the relevant passage actually supports the answer.
How to verify a claim before acting on it
- Separate explanation from checkable facts. Mark specific claims such as a deadline, testing rule, essay prompt, eligibility condition, estimated cost, or admission prediction. These need verification; general planning suggestions do not establish a college’s policy.
- Identify who owns the rule or decision. For admissions requirements, start with the college. For federal aid, use Federal Student Aid. For state grants, use the relevant state agency. If the claim concerns a participating Common App program, check the college’s terms as well as Common App’s information.
- Open the primary source directly. Use the institution’s admissions or financial-aid website, the relevant government site, or the application platform. Do not rely only on ChatGPT’s citation, a search-result snippet, or a third-party summary.
- Check whether the page fits your situation. Confirm the entry term and application cycle, program, residency, and application round. A correct policy for another year, course of study, or applicant group may not apply to you.
- Ask the decision-maker about conflicts. If the college page, application listing, and ChatGPT answer disagree, contact the college’s admissions or financial-aid office. Federal Student Aid also directs students to the school’s financial-aid office when school deadline details are unclear. Keep the reply in writing.
- Keep a source log. Record the claim, official page, date checked, and any office confirmation. A college application planner can help track multiple schools, but it is a reminder system—not a substitute for checking official information.
How to verify college application deadlines and requirements
Deadlines
Check the college’s current admissions page and the application platform for the exact date and time zone. Make sure the deadline is for your cycle and the right application type: early action, early decision, regular decision, transfer, or scholarship. Admissions and financial-aid deadlines are not interchangeable. Federal, state, and school aid deadlines can differ, so check each applicable source; the federal guidance explains the three deadline types at Federal Student Aid’s deadline overview.

Testing, writing, recommendations, and other documents
Verify each college’s current requirements rather than assuming a policy applies across schools. Common App’s first-year application guide points applicants to college-specific information, including testing, writing, deadlines, and recommendations. Confirm that the page covers your program and entry term.
Can you trust ChatGPT to tell you your chances of getting into a college?
Do not treat a ChatGPT-generated probability or prediction as an admissions decision or a reliable estimate of your individual outcome. The cited official guidance does not establish that ChatGPT can accurately predict whether a particular applicant will be admitted. Check published eligibility requirements and ask the college about process questions, but recognize that only the institution can make and confirm its admissions decision.

How to check financial-aid and cost information
After submitting the FAFSA, use the FAFSA Submission Summary to review your answers, schools, eligibility information, and next steps. It is not a college’s final aid offer. Once admitted, compare the actual financial-aid offer from each school to understand what that institution is offering.
For award-year details, use the applicable official form and instructions. The 2026–27 FAFSA form contains current award-year information; it should not be assumed to govern a different award year. Check the relevant school and state sources for their separate aid deadlines.

What a direct-admission offer does—and does not—confirm
For Common App Direct Admissions specifically, an offer indicates that a participating college believes an applicant meets its basic requirements; it is not itself final confirmation of an official spot. Common App says participating colleges verify submitted application information before confirming admission. Read the college’s own conditions and complete any required application steps. See Common App Direct Admissions for program details.

- Use ChatGPT for: organizing questions, explaining unfamiliar terms, and making a checklist of items to verify.
- Verify before acting on: deadlines, required materials, testing rules, aid eligibility, costs, and program conditions.
- Do not treat as settled: a generated admission prediction, an unsupported citation, or an offer that the responsible college has not confirmed.
Policies, prompts, deadlines, FAFSA details, and program conditions change. Recheck the official source for your own application cycle before submitting or making a financial decision.
