Stop the server before editing it, make a backup, save the JSON, and restart. Startup identity, networking, passwords, save intervals and coefficient-template selection are normally supplied as command-line parameters; those parameters take precedence over overlapping Engine.ini values. For fast, temporary adjustments, an administrator can use the in-game GM coefficient panel.

What controls a Soulmask dedicated server?
Soulmask settings are split between persistent gameplay coefficients and startup options. The coefficient file controls progression and survival values such as experience, gathering, durability and decay. Server identity, network ports, passwords, save timing and the selected preset are commonly passed when the server process starts. Keeping those roles separate makes troubleshooting much easier: a value that belongs to startup arguments will not necessarily change when you edit the JSON, and a JSON value can appear correct while a command-line argument overrides it.

The persistent coefficient file
On a dedicated-server installation, open WS/Saved/GameplaySettings/GameXishu.json. This is the file to edit for lasting coefficient changes. The file is generated and maintained by the server, so stop the process before opening it. A clean shutdown can rewrite the file; an edit made while the server is running can therefore disappear when the process exits.
Startup command-line parameters
Use the server launch command for settings that identify or expose the server and for values intended to be fixed at startup. Common examples include the server name and password, game and query ports, save and backup intervals, and a coefficient template selected with -coef=[name]. If a command-line argument and Engine.ini define the same option, the command line wins. Treat the launch command as authoritative and remove contradictory entries from other configuration files.

Templates shipped with the server
Official-style baselines are stored under WS/Config/GameplaySettings. The package analysis for dedicated-server build 25117130, extracted on 2026-09-05, found 132 templates. One documented example is -coef=PvE_10P_3x. A template is a starting point, not a universally best profile: the right values depend on whether the server is PvE or PvP, the size of a tribe, desired progression speed, tolerance for death and decay, and how much convenience you want without removing the survival loop.
How the three GameXishu blocks work
GameXishu.json contains three coefficient blocks. They are meaningful mode or schema contexts, not three copies that should automatically receive identical numbers. The package analysis found 131 of the 132 templates differ across blocks. It also found that 181 of 282 settings have a different minimum, maximum or default depending on the mode schema and block.

Because ranges and defaults can change by block, copying a convenient value into every section can silently overwrite distinctions intended by the game. Preserve the structure and key names supplied by the selected template. If a setting is absent from a block, do not invent a key; compare the block with the matching shipped template first.

Safely edit GameXishu.json
Use this workflow for persistent changes. It minimizes the two most common causes of lost settings: editing a live process and allowing the server to rewrite your work during shutdown.
- Decide the target profile. Record the server mode, tribe-size assumptions, progression target and tolerance for decay or loss. Start from a shipped template when possible.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the control panel’s Stop action or the host operating-system service command. Wait until the process has fully exited; do not edit while it is still writing saves.
- Back up the world and configuration. Copy the save data and the complete configuration directory to a dated location. Keep the original
GameXishu.jsonso you can roll back one change without rebuilding the server. - Open the file in a JSON-aware editor. Navigate to
WS/Saved/GameplaySettings/GameXishu.json. Preserve braces, commas, quotation marks and numeric types. A missing comma can prevent the server from loading the file. - Change only the required keys. Match each key to the correct block and mode schema. Check the minimum, maximum and default in the corresponding shipped template or schema before entering a number.
- Validate before saving. Run the editor’s JSON validation, check that all three blocks remain present, and confirm that no duplicate keys were introduced. Keep a copy of the original and note each changed key and old value.
- Save, then start the server. Use the panel’s Save action if one exists, followed by Start. A representative panel sequence is Stop, Configuration Files, open
GameXishu.json, edit, Save, then Start. - Verify in game. Join as a normal player and test one affected action, such as gaining XP, harvesting, taking durability damage or waiting through a decay interval. Also inspect the startup log for JSON or parameter errors.
Why live file edits are lost
The server can serialize its in-memory settings back to disk during a clean shutdown. If you edit while it is running, the in-memory copy may still contain the old values; when the process exits, that copy can overwrite your file. Always stop first, and restart after saving.
Change coefficients live with the GM panel
The in-game panel is useful for a quick experiment or an emergency adjustment when a restart is inconvenient. It requires a configured administrator password and grants broad control, so use it only for trusted administrators.

- Start the server and join it with an administrator account.
- Press
~to open the command console. - Enter
gm key <admin-password>, replacing the placeholder with the configured administrator password. - Open the coefficient-settings screen from the GM interface.
- Edit the required values, observing the range shown for the selected block or mode.
- Press
Escapeto close the coefficient screen. This step allows the panel to commit the changes. - Leave admin mode only after closing the screen, then test the result with a controlled action.
Use the GM route for short-term balancing or troubleshooting. For a repeatable community server, copy the final values into the stopped-server JSON workflow, retain a backup and document the change. Otherwise a later restart or template reload can return the server to its previous profile.
Choosing a practical baseline
There is no evidence-based single set of numbers that is best for every Soulmask community. Choose a baseline by answering these questions before touching individual coefficients:
- Mode: Is the world PvE, PvP or a harder variant where loss and conflict are central?
- Population and tribe size: A value that feels fast for two players can trivialize progression for a large, organized tribe.
- Progression speed: Decide whether players should reach advanced crafting in days, weeks or a longer season.
- Death and decay tolerance: Lower friction can help casual groups, while harsher decay creates a maintenance-focused game.
- Convenience versus survival: Faster gathering and durability can reduce repetitive chores, but pushing every multiplier upward removes scarcity and decision-making.
Use a template before hand-tuning
Start with a shipped preset such as PvE_10P_3x when you want an official-style foundation. Record the template name in your server documentation, then change only the few values that solve a demonstrated problem. This makes later updates and rollbacks manageable and avoids accidentally replacing mode-specific defaults.

Change one group at a time
Adjust related settings in a small batch: for example, gathering speed and the durability cost of tools, or XP gain and the pace of awareness progression. Restart and test that batch before changing another. If ten multipliers change simultaneously, you cannot tell which one caused an unexpected economy, combat or progression result.

Do not paste these numbers into every installation without checking port availability, firewall rules, hosting-panel fields and your existing scripts. A typo in a parameter name can leave the default active while making the launch command appear configured.
Networking, passwords and access control
Open only the required ports
The game and query services use UDP ports in the documented deployment examples. Configure matching UDP firewall and router rules for the ports in your launch command. RCON should be exposed only when you have deliberately configured and secured it. Opening additional ports increases attack surface and does not make coefficient edits work.

The password used by gm key grants access to the GM panel and full settings control. Do not post it in community chat, screenshots, public launch scripts or shared panel notes. Use a long, unique secret, restrict panel accounts, and change the password if it has been disclosed. A regular player password and the administrator password serve different purposes; configure both intentionally.
Container example
An unofficial container deployment example maps game port 27050/UDP and query port 27051/UDP, with BACKUP=900 and SAVING=600. Those values describe that image’s conventions, not a Soulmask-wide standard. Check the image documentation and map the host firewall to the ports actually published by your container.
File editing versus the GM panel

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
The settings themselves are the same, but operational responsibilities differ. Choose based on who will maintain SteamCMD or the server files, scripts, ports and backups.

Managed hosting is the practical route for administrators who want configuration access without maintaining the entire SteamCMD, networking and backup stack. Self-hosting suits operators who need unrestricted launch arguments, local automation or complete control over files.

Troubleshooting settings that do not apply
The JSON value reverts after a restart
- Check whether the file was edited while the server was running. Restore the backup, stop the server completely, edit again and restart.
- Confirm that the panel saved the file in the active instance, not a staging or inactive server directory.
- Look for a startup
-coeftemplate or another argument that reloads different values at launch.
The value is accepted but gameplay does not change
- Verify that you changed the block used by the current mode; the three blocks can have different ranges and defaults.
- Check for a command-line value that takes precedence over
Engine.inior the JSON setting. - Test with a measurable action and allow the relevant save or respawn interval to pass; some effects are not immediate.
The server fails to start after editing
- Run a JSON validator and repair missing commas, unmatched braces, invalid quotation marks or duplicate keys.
- Restore the last known-good backup, start the server, then reapply one validated change at a time.
- Compare key names and numeric ranges with the shipped template for the selected mode. Do not substitute a key from another block merely because its name looks similar.
The GM command is rejected
- Confirm that you joined the intended server and entered
gm key <admin-password>exactly, including capitalization and spacing. - Check that an administrator password is configured in the active startup settings and that you are using that password, not the ordinary player password.
- After editing, press
Escapeto close the coefficient screen before leaving admin mode.
A repeatable maintenance checklist
- Keep a dated copy of the world, configuration directory and launch command.
- Record the selected template and every manual coefficient change.
- Stop the server before persistent edits and validate JSON before starting it.
- Review command-line arguments whenever a setting appears ignored; they take precedence over overlapping
Engine.inivalues. - Test one change group with representative player actions before announcing a new ruleset.
- Review administrator access and rotate the password after staff changes or accidental disclosure.
- Verify that automated backups can actually be restored, not merely that files are being created.
