Generate a Garry’s Mod Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT) at Steam’s Game Server Account Management page by entering App ID 4000, adding a memo, and selecting Create. Copy the token, place it in your host panel’s GSLT or Steam Account Token field—or pass it with +sv_setsteamaccount on a self-managed server—then restart the server.

Your Steam account must own Garry’s Mod, have a qualifying registered phone number, and not be community banned, locked, or limited. Use one token for each server, keep it secret, and remember that changing your Steam password invalidates every active token on the account.

A GSLT is a Steam Game Server Login Token. It lets a dedicated Garry’s Mod server authenticate to Steam as a persistent game-server account rather than relying only on the Steam account used to administer the machine. Since the May 2020 Garry’s Mod update, servers are expected to use a GSLT.
The token is issued for a specific Steam application. For Garry’s Mod, guides consistently identify the application ID as 4000. After creation, Steam shows the application ID alongside the token, so verify that the new entry is for Garry’s Mod before putting it into a live server.

A token is not a player login password and it does not grant access to your Steam account. It is nevertheless a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to authenticate a server with it. Store it in private configuration, never paste it into a public support post, and revoke it if it is exposed.
Check your Steam account before you start
Token creation is controlled by Steam account eligibility. Confirm these conditions first:

| Account capacity | Steam’s retrieved account-management guidance has stated a limit of up to 1,000 game-server accounts per Steam account. Because that figure appeared in older crawled snippets, check the live page if you are approaching the limit. |
If your account is limited or lacks a qualifying phone number, creating additional tokens will not work until Steam removes the restriction or accepts the account’s phone verification. Do not substitute a random account that does not own the game.
Generate the GSLT in Steam

Open the official management page
Sign in to Steam and open https://steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers. This is Steam’s Game Server Account Management page, not a control-panel page supplied by a hosting company.

Enter Garry’s Mod’s App ID
In the App ID field, enter 4000. This is the application ID consistently identified for Garry’s Mod. After you create the entry, check the App ID displayed in the resulting row; if it is not 4000, do not use that token for a Garry’s Mod server.

Add a memo that identifies the server
Enter a short memo such as

Create the account and copy the token
Select Create. Steam reloads the page and adds a row containing the memo, login token, and App ID. Copy the token exactly. Avoid adding spaces or line breaks when you paste it into the server configuration.

Record which server owns the token
Keep an inventory of the memo, the server name, and the date you assigned the token. Do not publish the token itself in that inventory if other administrators can read it. Creating a separate token for every server makes it possible to revoke one server’s credential without disrupting the others.
Add the token to your server
The setting is the same even though the interface differs by host. Look for a field named GSLT, Steam Account Token, or a similar label.
Hosted control panels
- Stop or schedule a restart of the server according to the panel’s normal procedure.
- Open the server’s startup, launch-parameters, or settings page.
- Find the GSLT or Steam Account Token field. Some panels place it under an advanced or Steam integration section.
- Paste the token without quotation marks, leading spaces, or trailing spaces.
- Save the settings and start or restart the server.
Panel labels and layouts change, so use the panel’s current field name rather than expecting a particular menu path. If the panel has both a token field and a general command-line editor, use the provider’s documented token field unless its instructions explicitly require a launch parameter.

Self-managed or command-line servers
Add the token as the +sv_setsteamaccount launch parameter. A typical command-line fragment is:
+sv_setsteamaccount <GSLT>
Replace <GSLT> with the token you copied from Steam. Keep the parameter in the same startup script or service definition that launches your Garry’s Mod server, then restart the process so the new argument is read. If your startup system separates arguments with spaces, ensure +sv_setsteamaccount and the token remain part of the same launch command.
Do not mix tokens between servers
Use one GSLT for each server instance. If you operate development, staging, and production instances, create three entries and give each one a distinct memo. Reusing one token makes ownership and revocation difficult and defeats the purpose of per-server credentials.
Restart and confirm that Steam can see the server
Saving a token does not retroactively authenticate a running process. Restart the Garry’s Mod server after changing the panel field or launch command. Once it connects successfully, it should appear in the public server list.
Use this verification sequence:
- Open the Steam token-management page and confirm the entry’s App ID is 4000.
- Confirm the exact same token is present in the panel field or startup command.
- Restart the server rather than only changing a saved setting.
- Wait for the process to finish loading and then search the public server list using the server name, map, or other identifying information.
- If it remains absent, review the troubleshooting branches below before creating another token.
A listing problem does not automatically mean the token is invalid. The most common causes are a wrong App ID, a truncated paste, a token assigned to a different server, or a restart that never actually occurred.

Troubleshoot GSLT creation and authentication
Error 24: phone number is not qualified
Error 24 is commonly reported when Steam does not accept the account’s phone number for persistent game-server accounts. Having a phone number visible in your profile is not proof that it meets Steam’s qualification rules. Check that the number is registered to the same Steam account and that it is still active.
If Steam rejects the number, the practical options are to associate a different qualifying number or contact Steam Support. Do not repeatedly create partial entries or copy a token from another account; those actions do not correct phone eligibility.
Error 24: the account is banned from creating tokens
The same error can also indicate a ban on creating game-server tokens. This is a different problem from an unqualified phone number. If the number appears valid and the account otherwise meets the requirements, treat the message as a possible account restriction and ask Steam Support to clarify the account’s status.

Check the items in this order:
- Confirm that the Steam entry was created with App ID 4000.
- Compare the token in Steam with the value in the panel or startup command character by character. Re-copy it if necessary.
- Make sure the token belongs to this server and was not accidentally replaced with another server’s token.
- Verify that the server was fully restarted after the change.
- Check the server’s startup output for a malformed parameter or an argument that was omitted by the panel.
If the server still does not list after those checks, create a support ticket with your host or consult Steam Support without exposing the token. Include the App ID, the time of the restart, and the visible error text—not the credential itself.
The token was pasted with extra characters
Tokens can fail when copied with quotation marks, spaces, or a line break from a formatted document. Paste directly into the panel field or startup configuration, then inspect the beginning and end of the value for accidental whitespace. Never “fix” a token by changing individual characters; generate a replacement if the value is damaged or uncertain.

You changed your Steam password
Changing the Steam password invalidates all active GSLTs on that account, regardless of whether the password change was made voluntarily or forced as a security recovery. If you run several servers, every one of them may stop authenticating at the same time.
After a password change, review the token list, create replacement entries as needed, update each server’s token field or launch command, and restart each server. Maintain a per-server inventory so you can complete this recovery without guessing which token was assigned where.

A token was exposed
Treat a leaked token as compromised. Delete it from Steam’s game-server account page immediately, create a new token with the correct App ID, replace the value in the server configuration, and restart the server. Do not leave the old token active while waiting to see whether someone uses it.
Operating multiple Garry’s Mod servers
Separate tokens are especially important when one Steam account manages several communities or environments. Use a naming convention in the memo that identifies the game mode, region, and instance number, for example TTT-US-02. Keep the memo free of secrets because other administrators may be able to see it.
Document the assignment in a restricted password manager or equivalent secret store. The record should identify the server and its configuration location, while access to the actual token should be limited to the administrators who need to restart or migrate that server.
When moving a server to a new machine, carry over the token only through a private administrative channel. The token represents the server account, not the physical host, so a migration does not require a new token by itself. Generate a new one when the old value is unknown, exposed, or intentionally retired.
