Sonos Alternatives: What to Look for in a Wireless Multi-Room Speaker System

The right Sonos alternative depends on how your household streams, groups rooms, and uses existing audio gear. Here’s what to check across Audio Pro, WiiM, Bluesound, HomePod, and Bose.

The best Sonos alternative depends first on how your household streams music and what audio gear you already own. Before comparing speakers, check whether the exact models can group across rooms, support your music services through the control method you use, and connect to any speakers or amplifier you want to keep.

Start with compatibility, not the speaker name

“Multi-room” does not guarantee that products from different brands will play together. AirPlay 2 and Google Cast can group compatible products across manufacturers, while proprietary systems may limit grouping to particular products and apps. Confirm the exact models and the grouping route you expect to use before buying. Crutchfield’s multi-room audio guide explains the standards and compatibility questions to check.

Streaming support also comes in distinct forms. A service may be built into a speaker maker’s app, controlled directly from the service’s app through a feature such as Spotify Connect, or played from a phone using AirPlay or Google Cast. One route does not imply the others. For example, Sonos lists supported-app control and AirPlay 2, while a July 2026 review of the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker reports Google Cast, AirPlay 2, and Spotify Connect—but says Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect were absent at launch. Sonos’s speaker page and the Bose Lifestyle Ultra review describe those specific product lineups; check current support for the individual model you are considering.

Check the whole household’s control path

  • List the phones, tablets, computers, and voice assistants people actually use.
  • For each important music service, confirm whether you can start playback in its own app, in the speaker maker’s app, or by casting or AirPlaying.
  • Verify that the desired control path also supports grouping the rooms you want. A feature available on one speaker may not work across every device in a mixed-brand setup.

Choose a system shape that fits your rooms

Some systems are built around powered wireless speakers, while others include streamers and amplifiers that can connect to audio equipment you already own. Decide whether you need a complete room-by-room speaker system or a way to add network streaming and grouping to existing passive speakers or an amplifier.

For existing passive speakers or an amplifier

A streamer or multi-room amplifier can be a better fit than replacing working speakers. A 2026 multi-room roundup includes WiiM’s Pro Plus streamer and Amp Pro alongside its Sound and Sound Lite wireless speakers. These are different kinds of products: match the exact model to your existing equipment and check its outputs, amplification needs, grouping options, and streaming support. What Hi-Fi?’s multi-room roundup describes the reviewed options.

For a straightforward wireless-speaker setup

Compare powered speakers by room coverage, mains or portable use, inputs, and how their app groups them. Audio Pro’s current alternatives guide names the C20 W, Addon C3, C5A, and C10 MkII, describing Wi-Fi, Ethernet, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, and other streaming support across the reviewed range. The guide also identifies app reliability and the relative lack of home-cinema components as trade-offs; those observations belong to the reviewed range, not necessarily every model or future software version. What Hi-Fi?’s Sonos alternatives guide has the model-specific context.

System or product family What may make it a fit What to verify
Audio Pro The reviewed range includes several Wi-Fi speakers and supports connections and streaming routes such as AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, and, on some models, Ethernet and line-in. Check the exact model’s inputs and services. The alternatives guide notes app reliability as a trade-off and says the range has relatively few home-cinema components. Source
WiiM The reviewed lineup includes the Pro Plus streamer and Amp Pro for existing audio setups, as well as Sound and Sound Lite wireless speakers. Choose between streamer, amplifier, and speaker based on your gear; confirm exact protocol and service support for that model. Source
Bluesound The reviewed system spans streamers and Pulse Cinema soundbars. One reviewed product’s listed capabilities include Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music, AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth. Do not assume that one product’s service list applies across the Bluesound range. Check the model’s specific support and its fit with your TV or other audio equipment. Source
Apple HomePod The reviewed roundup describes an AirPlay 2-centered system, a natural candidate to investigate for an Apple-focused home. In that comparison, Apple Music is the only natively supported music service listed. If you rely on other services or devices, verify how you will control playback and group rooms. Source
Bose Lifestyle Ultra Speaker A July 13, 2026 review reports Google Cast, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth 5.3, AUX, and Bose-app stereo pairing or integration with Lifestyle products. The review reports no Ethernet port and says Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect were unavailable at launch. Confirm current features and regional availability. Source
Sonos (baseline) Sonos lists Era, Five, Roam, Move, and Play options, supported-app control including Spotify and TIDAL, AirPlay 2, and whole-home grouping. Use the system you own—or would otherwise buy—as the comparison point for services, portability, line-in, and TV integration. Source

Account for inputs, local libraries, and TV use

Inputs can make a system more useful than its wireless-speaker description suggests. If you want to connect a turntable, CD player, television, or another source, check for the specific input you need—such as line-in, AUX, optical, or RCA—and whether playback from it can be grouped into other rooms. Bluetooth may work only on the receiving speaker or may be redistributed by the system; do not assume multi-room Bluetooth from the presence of Bluetooth alone.

For music stored on a computer, NAS, or home server, look for DLNA or UPnP support and confirm which app will browse and play the library. These standards can make local files available over the network, but setup and app experience may differ from streaming services. The same compatibility guide covers local playback, inputs, and grouping considerations. Read the guide.

If you want music and TV audio in one ecosystem, check whether it has a suitable soundbar, the TV connection you need, and a supported way to integrate other speakers. Not every music-first multi-room platform offers a Sonos-like home-theater path; Audio Pro’s alternatives guide, for example, identifies a relative lack of home-cinema components in its reviewed range. Include software and support lifetime in the decision

A speaker can keep producing sound after its cloud service or software support changes, but the way you control and group it may change substantially. Before investing in a system, check how it depends on cloud services, what functions remain if those services end, and whether the manufacturer continues to provide firmware and security updates.

Bose’s SoundTouch changes show why this matters for existing owners. Bose says its cloud functionality has ended. Following the May 6, 2026 app update, the app retains limited control of systems on the same Wi-Fi network, including setup, configuration, remote control, and grouping. Browsing music services or starting music from within the SoundTouch app no longer works. Bose also says SoundTouch products no longer receive security updates and firmware updates are unavailable. Bose’s SoundTouch end-of-life support page describes the changes.

  • Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.

Ways SoundTouch owners can still play music

  • For Spotify, Bose directs users to choose the SoundTouch system from Spotify Connect.
  • For TuneIn and Pandora, Bose describes streaming from their apps by AirPlay or Bluetooth. Some Android users without Bluetooth may be able to use an AUX-connected wireless receiver, if the speaker has the necessary input.
  • AirPlay multi-room use requires AirPlay 2. Confirm that the particular SoundTouch model and the device sending audio support the required connection.

Bose says existing presets may continue to work, but does not guarantee they will, and users can no longer change them. The remaining controls and playback routes depend on the speaker model and devices in the home. Check Bose’s SoundTouch instructions.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Write down your must-have services and devices. Identify the apps and phones that need to control playback, not just the services you expect a speaker to list.
  2. Choose the grouping standard or platform. Decide whether cross-brand AirPlay 2 or Google Cast matters, or whether a single manufacturer’s ecosystem meets your needs.
  3. Map the rooms and existing equipment. Note where you need a powered speaker, where a streamer or amplifier could reuse existing gear, and whether portability matters.
  4. Check source connections and libraries. Verify required inputs, local-library support, and whether those sources can play in multiple rooms.
  5. Plan for television separately. Confirm the TV connection, soundbar options, and speaker integration instead of assuming a music system will also serve as a home-cinema system.
  6. Verify model-specific and regional details. Check current service support, app features, availability, and update policy on the manufacturer’s page before purchase; the cited comparisons do not establish live stock, prices, or support commitments for every model.
