On most U.S. packaged foods, find Total Sugars in the Nutrition Facts panel, then read the indented Includes Added Sugars line beneath it. The added-sugar grams are already part of Total Sugars—not an extra amount to add. Check serving size before comparing products, then use grams and % Daily Value (%DV) to see how much added sugar one serving provides.
Where to find added sugars on the label
- Check the serving size. Added-sugar amounts apply to one labeled serving. If you eat more or less, adjust the amount accordingly; also note how many servings are in the package.
- Find Total Sugars. It appears within the carbohydrates section of the Nutrition Facts panel.
- Read the indented Added Sugars line. On most packaged foods, it appears below Total Sugars and gives grams and %DV per serving. “Includes” signals that the added-sugar amount is included in Total Sugars.
For example, a yogurt with 15 grams of Total Sugars that “Includes 7g Added Sugars” has 7 grams of added sugars and 8 grams of sugars that are not added. Do not add 7 to 15. See the FDA’s explanation of added sugars on the Nutrition Facts label.

Total Sugars vs. Added Sugars
Total Sugars includes sugars naturally present in foods, such as milk and fruit, as well as any added sugars. Added Sugars counts sugars added during processing or packaged as sweeteners. That includes sugars from syrups and honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. Sugars naturally present in milk, fruits, and vegetables are not classed as added sugars.

The two lines answer different questions: Total Sugars tells you the full sugar amount in a serving; Added Sugars shows the portion counted as added under FDA labeling rules. For the declared quantitative amount per serving, use the Added Sugars line. The ingredient list can provide additional context about what is in the product, but it does not replace that number.

How to compare grams and %DV
Grams show the amount of added sugars in one serving. The %DV places that amount in context against the FDA’s Daily Value: 50 grams per day, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. It is a reference amount, not necessarily your personal daily allowance; individual calorie needs can differ.
- 5% DV or less: FDA calls this a low source of added sugars.
- 20% DV or more: FDA calls this a high source of added sugars.
These are quick comparison cues for one serving, not a judgment that a product is healthy or unhealthy. FDA notes that a limited amount of added sugars can fit within an overall healthy eating pattern. For the FDA’s consumer guidance, the 50-gram Daily Value is also an example based on the recommendation to keep added sugars below 10% of total calories on a 2,000-calorie diet.

A practical comparison
- Compare serving sizes first. If they differ, consider the amount you are likely to eat and adjust the figures to that amount.
- Compare Added Sugars grams for the amount you will eat.
- Use %DV as a quick way to compare the share of the reference Daily Value per serving.
Compare similar foods and realistic portions where possible. A smaller number per serving is not directly useful if the serving sizes differ substantially.

Single-ingredient sweeteners such as table sugar, pure honey, and maple syrup are an exception to the usual display. Their labels may show %DV for Added Sugars without grams on that line; grams may instead appear in a footnote. The FDA’s label-change guidance explains that this format avoids implying that another ingredient was added to a single-ingredient sweetener. An absent gram figure on the Added Sugars line does not mean zero added sugars.

Use the label as a whole
Added Sugars is one part of the Nutrition Facts panel. Serving size, the rest of the panel, and the ingredient list can all help you understand and compare foods. Use the Added Sugars line for the per-serving quantity, and treat %DV as a reference for comparison rather than a personalized target.
