Compare a new cyberpunk game with other open-world RPGs by checking the same five things in each: world design, role-playing agency, quests and story, combat and builds, and platform or edition details. A cyberpunk setting or an “open-world RPG” label is a starting point, not proof that two games offer similar exploration or meaningful choices.
Start with the features that change how you play
Choose the dimensions that matter most to you before making an overall judgment. If you want to build a character in different ways, give more weight to progression and choice consequences. If you want to explore, focus on the world’s structure and traversal. Avoid a single similarity score: two games may share a neon-soaked setting while offering very different quests, combat, or player agency.

Use the same evidence standard for each game
- Confirmed: A publisher’s product page or announcement states the feature. Attribute promotional descriptions to the publisher rather than presenting them as independent proof of how well the feature works.
- Reported: A named outlet describes the game, but the feature may not be independently verified or playable yet.
- Not yet established: Available descriptions do not specify the mechanic or outcome. Leave it unknown instead of filling the gap with genre assumptions.
Compare world design, not just cyberpunk aesthetics
Ask whether the game’s setting is cyberpunk in both theme and visual style, then look at how exploration works. Check whether the world is broad or densely packed, how districts differ, what traversal options are documented, and whether the game describes optional places or activities. A city setting alone does not tell you how much there is to explore or how exploration is structured.
For example, Bandai Namco Europe describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world action-adventure RPG set in Night City. That establishes its official framing and setting; it should not be treated as evidence that another game with an urban map has the same world design.

Test whether the RPG systems offer real agency
Look for named mechanics, not just the letters “RPG” on a store page. Compare what players can customize, whether different builds change available approaches, and whether choices affect quests or later outcomes. A game can have character progression without offering branching story consequences, or dialogue choices without substantially different playstyles.
CD PROJEKT RED’s official framing for Cyberpunk 2077 highlights character and playstyle customization, jobs, reputation, and upgrades. Its 2018 introduction describes the game as narrative-driven and role-playing. These are useful reference points, but they do not establish how deep another title’s choices or builds are; each game needs specific evidence for its own systems.

- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world, an action adventure story set in night city
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night city
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
One reader discussion phrases the question as “How are the RPG elements in Cyberpunk 2077?” and raises choices, builds, branching story, and customization. That is a useful way to frame your own comparison, not evidence of what players in general think.

Descriptions such as “narrative-driven” tell you how a publisher presents a game, not whether its quests branch, how optional content works, or whether decisions change later events. For each title, distinguish the advertised story premise from confirmed quest behavior. Record branching or consequences only when a source names or demonstrates them.

Compare combat by tactics and build interaction
Weapon lists alone make a weak comparison. Ask which combat approaches are documented and whether upgrades change how encounters can be handled. A skill tree may offer numerical improvements without changing tactics; vehicle combat or other distinct systems may affect the kinds of encounters a game supports.
In its 2023 Ultimate Edition announcement, CD PROJEKT RED said Update 2.0 introduced redesigned skill trees, vehicle combat, and enhanced enemy and police AI. Those are publisher-reported update features, not a guarantee that a new game with a skill tree or driving has equivalent combat. Attribute the claim and compare the documented systems rather than inferring parity.

Check platforms and edition contents separately
Do not let a gameplay comparison obscure what a particular purchase includes. Confirm the platform, region, and current edition contents on the official product page, especially when comparing a base game with a bundle or expansion. Edition availability can change over time.
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as including the base game and Phantom Liberty. The publisher’s 2026 Battle.net announcement described a Battle.net release and separate purchase choices for the base game, expansion, and Ultimate Edition. These are time-sensitive publisher statements; check the current listing for the platform and region you plan to use.

Use a comparison table without pretending unknowns are facts
For two or more games, put the same categories in each column and label the evidence. A concise table makes it easier to spot where a comparison is solid and where a new game’s description is still incomplete.
| Axis | What to record | Evidence threshold |
|---|---|---|
| World and setting | Theme, world structure, exploration density, districts, traversal | Official description for confirmed setting and map or traversal details; clearly attributed reporting for hands-on observations |
| RPG agency | Character builds, customization, choice consequences | Name the actual mechanics or outcomes; a genre label is insufficient |
| Narrative and quests | Mission-led or open-ended structure, branching, optional content | Separate advertised story framing from verified quest behavior |
| Combat and builds | Available approaches and whether progression changes tactics | Compare documented systems rather than weapon lists alone |
| Practical details | Platforms, regions, editions, included content | Check current official product information for the relevant platform and region |
How to assess a newly announced game such as No Law
Neon Giant’s No Law is described in PC Gamer’s report as an announced cyberpunk, first-person, open-world shooter RPG. Treat that as a reported description, not confirmation that the game has particular systems or that they are already playable. PC Gamer also cautions that “open-world shooter RPG” by itself does not establish deep role-playing agency, systemic interaction, or immersive-sim depth.
Apply the same scorecard as for an established game, but mark unconfirmed mechanics as not yet established. Do not call a new title “the next Cyberpunk” based only on a shared setting, first-person perspective, or open-world wording; wait for evidence about how its world, quests, builds, and combat actually work.
