Update affected SMA 1000 appliances now. NHS England Digital reports active exploitation of CVE-2026-83548, a pre-authentication server-side request forgery (SSRF) flaw in the Appliance Work Place interface. Its September 2, 2026 alert lists SMA 1000 models 6210, 7210 and 8200v running 12.4.3-03453 or earlier, or 12.5.0-02835 or earlier, as affected. The listed fixed hotfixes are 12.4.3-03526 and higher, or 12.5.0-02952 and higher. Confirm the current approved package and upgrade path in SonicWall advisory SNWLID-2026-0016 before making the change.

What is CVE-2026-83548?

CVE-2026-83548 is a pre-authentication SSRF vulnerability in the SonicWall SMA 1000 Appliance Work Place interface. An SSRF flaw can cause a server to make requests to other resources on an attacker’s behalf. NHS England Digital says this issue could let a remote, unauthenticated attacker access sensitive functionality and perform unauthorized operations. The alert assigns it a CVSS v3 score of 10.0; that is a severity rating, not a measure of the likelihood that a particular appliance has been compromised.

The same September alert also describes CVE-2026-83549, a separate command-injection vulnerability that requires administrator authentication and has a CVSS v3 score of 7.8. Do not treat the two flaws as interchangeable: their attack requirements differ. NHS England Digital identifies SonicWall advisory SNWLID-2026-0016 as the vendor update for both issues.

Which SMA 1000 models and firmware are affected?

The September 2, 2026 alert identifies these models and firmware cutoffs for CVE-2026-83548:

#1 Best Overall
SonicWall Global VPN Client - License - 10 Licenses (01-SSC-5311) - Secure IPsec VPN Connectivity for Remote Work & Site-to-Site Access
  • SonicWall Global VPN Client - License (01-SSC-5311)
  • Secure IPsec VPN Access: Enables encrypted remote connections to SonicWall firewalls using robust IPsec tunneling protocols.
  • Consistent Remote Access Experience: Delivers a reliable and high-performance VPN connection for employees working remotely or from branch sites.
  • Compatible with Windows OS: Designed for Microsoft Windows environments, with simple installation and configuration.
  • Policy-Based Access Control: Enforce connection rules and restrict access to resources based on user identity and endpoint status.
Model Affected firmware Listed fixed hotfix branch
6210, 7210 or 8200v 12.4.3-03453 or earlier 12.4.3-03526 or higher
6210, 7210 or 8200v 12.5.0-02835 or earlier 12.5.0-02952 or higher

These are branch-specific version thresholds: compare your installed release with the corresponding branch, and do not assume that a version number from one branch is a valid substitute for the other. The alert’s listed models and ranges define the scope covered here; if your hardware, deployment or version is an edge case, ask SonicWall to confirm its status.

Which patch should you install?

For the affected ranges above, NHS England Digital lists 12.4.3-03526 and higher, or 12.5.0-02952 and higher, as fixed platform-hotfix versions. Because vendor releases and approved upgrade paths can change, use SonicWall’s current advisory SNWLID-2026-0016 to confirm the correct package for your appliance and the route to install it. Do not select a package solely because its version number appears higher than your current release.

  1. Identify the appliance and installed release. Record the model and full firmware version, including its branch and build number.
  2. Check the vendor advisory. Consult SonicWall advisory SNWLID-2026-0016 for the current fixed package and applicable upgrade path.
  3. Apply the approved hotfix. Follow SonicWall’s instructions for the specific appliance and verify the resulting firmware version after installation.
  4. Escalate suspected compromise. If you find indicators of compromise, use the response steps below rather than treating patch installation alone as incident recovery.

Is the vulnerability being actively exploited?

Yes. NHS England Digital’s September 2, 2026 alert says SonicWall investigated a case indicating active exploitation. CERT-In’s September 3, 2026 note also says the vulnerabilities are being actively exploited. An active-exploitation report raises the urgency of checking and patching affected appliances, but does not establish that any specific organization or appliance has been compromised.

What should you do if compromise is suspected?

If indicators of compromise are detected, NHS England Digital advises organizations to contact SonicWall Technical Support for review. It also recommends re-imaging hardware appliances or re-deploying virtual appliances, changing all user and administrator passwords, and resetting TOTP tokens. Coordinate these actions with SonicWall Technical Support so that response and recovery account for your deployment.

Is this the same as the July 2026 SMA 1000 SSRF?

No. The July 15, 2026 SonicWall advisory SNWLID-2026-0008 covers CVE-2026-15409, a different pre-authentication SSRF, and CVE-2026-15410, a separate authenticated code-injection issue. That July advisory has its own affected-version thresholds and mentions checks involving extraweb_access.log, ctrl-service.log and /var/lib/unit/conf.json. Those checks and version cutoffs should not be carried over to CVE-2026-83548 without confirmation from SonicWall’s September advisory.

Are SonicWall firewall SSL-VPN or SMA 100 Series products affected?

The July advisory explicitly says CVE-2026-15409 and CVE-2026-15410 do not affect SonicWall firewall SSL-VPN or SMA 100 Series. That statement concerns the July vulnerabilities; it does not by itself establish the product scope of the September CVE-2026-83548. For the September issue, the listed affected products are SMA 1000 models 6210, 7210 and 8200v. Confirm any other product or model with SonicWall.
