The crypto-to-fiat conversion may happen before you shop, when you preload a fiat balance, or as the card purchase is processed. The exact timing, exchange rate and final debit depend on the card program.
What happens when you pay with a crypto card?
- You present the card. The card credential starts a payment through the usual card acceptance system.
- The card program finds the funding source. Depending on the program, it uses fiat you loaded earlier or draws value from a linked crypto balance.
- Crypto is converted on the customer or provider side, if needed. In a common debit-style arrangement, the issuer sells enough cryptocurrency from the connected wallet to fund the purchase. That is a general description, not a guarantee of an on-chain sale at the instant you tap.
- The merchant receives fiat. The card network and its financial partners route payment in the merchant’s currency. The merchant ordinarily does not receive the customer’s bitcoin, ether or stablecoin directly. Visa describes this merchant-side flow in its crypto-card explainer; Mastercard also explains how crypto-linked cards work in its 2026 overview.
When is the cryptocurrency converted?
Before the purchase: sell and preload fiat
Some prepaid or preload arrangements require you to sell crypto into a fiat balance before spending. The card then draws on that balance, so the purchase itself may not trigger a new crypto sale.

At the point of sale: fund from a crypto balance
Other programs allow a purchase to draw against crypto and convert the necessary value as part of the payment process. Visa notes that both pre-conversion and point-of-sale conversion approaches exist. Do not assume which one applies without checking the specific card’s current terms.

The label does not tell you whether the card spends crypto directly, borrows fiat, or simply gives crypto rewards. Mastercard distinguishes several broad designs:

- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Debit-style: existing crypto may be sold to fund spending.
- Prepaid: the user may need to top up a fiat balance in advance.
- Credit: the issuer lends fiat; crypto may be a reward rather than the source of funds.
- Secured credit: crypto may serve as collateral for a credit facility.
A credit card that awards crypto for purchases therefore does not necessarily sell your crypto balance at checkout. Mastercard’s card overview describes these distinctions.
Why the final amount can differ from the amount you expect
Conversion fees and exchange-rate spread
A stated transaction fee and the exchange-rate spread are separate costs. Visa says fees are set by the issuing bank or crypto exchange and advises customers to check the provider’s details. Mastercard notes that a provider may apply a less favorable sale price than the market price; that spread can cost you even when a transaction fee is advertised as zero. Compare the rate used for conversion as well as any listed fees. See Visa’s fee guidance and Mastercard’s crypto-card explainer.

Authorization and settlement timing
A card purchase can be authorized before it is finally settled. In one issuer-specific example, OKX says transactions are authorized and settled in fiat, and that the final stablecoin debit may change if exchange rates move between authorization and settlement. That rule is specific to OKX’s agreement, not a universal feature of crypto cards. Review the relevant issuer’s card agreement.
A separate foreign-currency conversion
Crypto-to-fiat conversion is not the same as converting between two fiat currencies. If a merchant charges in a currency different from the card account’s currency, a separate foreign-exchange conversion may apply. The applicable rate and any fee depend on the product and transaction; there is no universal rate or fee established for all crypto cards.

What varies from one card program to another?
- Supported assets and spending order: some programs may let you choose an asset or set a priority when one balance is too small; others may offer different controls.
- Custody and approval: an exchange-linked provider may hold assets and handle the sale, while a self-custody setup may leave key control and transaction approval with the user.
- Fees, exchange rates and settlement adjustments: these are set by the specific program and can affect the amount ultimately debited.
- Country availability and eligibility: card access and features depend on the provider and location.
These are program-level differences, not guaranteed features. Visa’s overview, Mastercard’s 2026 overview and the OKX agreement illustrate why the named provider’s current terms matter.

How to assess a card’s checkout conversion
- Identify the structure. Check whether it is debit, prepaid, credit or secured credit, and whether purchases use crypto or a fiat balance.
- Find the conversion point. Look for whether you must preload fiat or whether conversion happens when you spend.
- Check the price of conversion. Review explicit transaction and foreign-exchange fees, the exchange rate and any spread.
- Read the settlement rules. Confirm whether the amount authorized can change before final settlement.
- Check assets, custody and location. Verify supported coins, spending priority, who controls the wallet, and whether the card and its features are available where you live.
