SonicWall SMA 1000 vs. SMA 100: Features, Deployment, and Support

SMA 100 and SMA 1000 are distinct SonicWall remote-access families. Compare their models and deployment options—and understand why SMA 100’s end-of-support status matters.

SonicWall SMA 100 and SMA 1000 are separate Secure Mobile Access product families, not two editions of the same appliance. The SMA 100 family includes SMA 210, SMA 410, and virtual SMA 500v; the SMA 1000 family includes physical SMA 6200, 6210, 7200, and 7210 appliances, plus virtual SMA 8200v. The deciding issue for many buyers is lifecycle: SonicWall currently describes SMA 100 as end of sale and end of support, so it should not be treated as a supported choice for a new deployment.

Which models belong to each family?

Start with the model number rather than the family label. The two names cover distinct hardware and virtual-appliance lineups.

SMA 1000 SMA 6200, SMA 6210, SMA 7200, SMA 7210, SMA 8200v SMA 8200v is virtual; the other listed models are physical appliances. The 6200 and 7200 are also named in the CMS Global HA platform list. SonicWall SMA 1000 Series datasheet

These model lists establish family membership, not equivalent capacity. The available SonicWall materials do not establish matched throughput, concurrent-session limits, street prices, or total cost for comparable models. Do not infer those figures from model numbers or marketing descriptions.

What deployment and management options differ?

Physical appliance versus virtual appliance

Both families include a virtual model: SMA 500v in the 100 Series and SMA 8200v in the 1000 Series. Choosing virtual versus physical is a separate decision from choosing management or high availability. Confirm that the intended appliance form and firmware are supported in the target environment.

SMA 1000 CMS and Global HA

SonicWall documents centralized management through Central Management Server (CMS) and Global High Availability (Global HA) for SMA 1000. In the SMA 12.5 CMS administration guide, supported CMS platforms include VMware ESXi 7.x or higher, Microsoft Hyper-V on Windows Server 2016 or 2019, KVM 2.11.1, AWS, and Azure. The guide names SMA 6200, 6210, 7200, 7210, and 8200v as supported SMA 1000 appliances. These are version-specific guide details, not a guarantee for every later or earlier release; check the platform matrix for the exact version you plan to deploy. SonicWall SMA 12.5 CMS Administration Guide

Global HA supports load distribution and disaster recovery across appliances in one datacenter or dispersed datacenters. SonicWall says Global HA replaces the older HA Pair model; SMA version 11.4 was the last version supporting HA Pairs. They are distinct architectures, so a legacy HA Pair design should not be assumed to transfer directly to Global HA. SonicWall Global HA documentation

Broader deployment choices

SonicWall describes SMA deployment across physical, private-cloud, and public-cloud environments. The exact combination available depends on product, release, and configuration. Validate the target model, firmware, cloud or hypervisor platform, and CMS compatibility together before committing to an architecture. SonicWall Secure Mobile Access overview

What access and security features are documented?

SonicWall describes SMA generally as a way to provide secure remote access to corporate resources hosted on-premises, in cloud, or in hybrid datacenters. Its overview also lists granular access control, context-aware device authorization, and application-level VPN. Those are platform-level descriptions; they should not be read as proof that every model, firmware, or license includes an identical configuration.

The SMA 1000 datasheet specifically lists the following feature categories:

  • Layer 3 tunneling, split tunneling, and redirect-all tunneling.
  • Always On VPN, HTML5 access, per-application VPN, and application proxy.
  • Identity and authentication integrations, endpoint and device checks, and role-based access control.
  • Management, reporting, and licensing options.

Configuration and entitlement can vary by software version and license. The supplied product materials do not provide a feature-by-feature comparison establishing that these SMA 1000 datasheet items are unique to that family or absent from SMA 100.

Why SMA 100 lifecycle status changes the comparison

SonicWall currently marks SMA 100 as end of sale and end of support and points to an upgrade offer for Cloud Secure Edge. That makes SMA 100 an installed-product or migration consideration rather than a currently supported new-deployment recommendation. SonicWall Secure Mobile Access overview

For an existing unit, confirm its exact model, firmware, support contract, and migration route with SonicWall before relying on a continuity or security assumption. A SonicWall lifecycle table snapshot accessed October 7, 2026 displayed June 30, 2027 as the end date for SMA v12.4.3; that date is specific to the listed software version and the captured table, not a universal support date for every SMA 1000 model or firmware branch. Check the live lifecycle record for current status. SonicWall Product Lifecycle Tables

  1. Identify the installed or proposed model. Record whether it is an SMA 210, 410, 500v, 6200, 6210, 7200, 7210, or 8200v; do not treat the family names as model specifications.
  2. Map access requirements. Identify users, applications, remote-access patterns, identity integrations, and endpoint checks needed. Confirm the exact features and licensing for the intended firmware.
  3. Choose the deployment form and site design. Decide whether a physical or virtual appliance fits, and whether the design is single-site or multi-site. For SMA 1000 resilience, validate Global HA topology and its fit for the deployment; do not assume a legacy HA Pair is interchangeable.
  4. Verify the platform matrix. Check CMS, hypervisor, AWS, or Azure compatibility for the exact SMA release and appliance model before implementation.
  5. Confirm lifecycle and migration eligibility. Ask SonicWall to verify support status, firmware and client compatibility, contract coverage, licensing, and the migration path for the specific installation.
  6. Request comparable commercial and capacity figures. The cited materials do not establish matched throughput, session capacity, current street pricing, or total cost. Obtain figures for the exact models, licenses, and configuration under consideration rather than estimating from family labels.
