The main difference is how each game is built around racing. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds uses Travel Rings to send racers between worlds mid-race; Team Sonic Racing puts cooperative team racing at the center. CrossWorlds is also the newer release and has a broader currently listed platform range. If you’re choosing between them, start with the kind of race you want, then check player limits and the edition available for your platform.
How are the racing mechanics different?
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds shifts between worlds
SEGA describes Travel Rings as portals that take racers from one world to another, changing the setting during a race. The game’s official slogan is “Get ready for races that transcend dimensions!”—promotional language for its world-hopping premise, not an independent assessment of how the game plays. SEGA also describes races across land, sea, air and space. SEGA’s CrossWorlds site and its launch announcement outline that concept.

Team Sonic Racing makes teamwork the focus
Team Sonic Racing is explicitly presented as a team-racing game: the defining idea is racing as part of a team and using team-oriented mechanics. CrossWorlds also includes team-oriented Festival events, according to SEGA, but its distinctive headline hook is Travel Rings and changing worlds—not the same team-first pitch.

When did each game launch?
| Game | Date | What the date represents |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | September 25, 2025 | Launch date announced by SEGA Corporation. |
| Team Sonic Racing | May 21, 2019 | Release date listed on SEGA Asia’s regional product page; treat it as the date that page lists. |
The dates establish that CrossWorlds is newer. They do not, by themselves, establish that it is a direct sequel; the cited sources establish chronology, not a formal sequel relationship.
How many people can play locally or online?
| Game | Local play | Online or network matches | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | 1–4 players; up to 8 through local communication on Nintendo Switch | Up to 12 players | SEGA’s current official CrossWorlds site lists these specifications. The 8-player figure is a Switch local-communication exception, not the general local-play count. |
| Team Sonic Racing | 1–4 players | 12 in network matches | These figures are listed by SEGA Asia for its regional product page; they should not be assumed to describe every platform and mode identically. |
For a particular setup, check the game’s listing for your platform and region. A published player limit does not establish current server health or how many people are online.

The cited Team Sonic Racing regional page does not provide a comparable, complete current platform-and-format list, so platform availability should be checked in the relevant regional store rather than inferred from this comparison.

SEGA also describes CrossWorlds modes including World Match, a 12-player race, team-oriented Festival events and Time Trial. Its support overview covers offline and online modes, vehicle building, unlockable gadgets and power-up items: SEGA Support’s CrossWorlds overview. These details help explain CrossWorlds’ advertised offering, but they do not answer which game performs better or has more content across editions.
Current prices, platform-by-platform performance, track and character totals across editions, and current online population are not established by the cited product information. Check the store and platform details that matter to you rather than using those unknowns to assume one game is superior.
