1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose anaglyph if you want to view 3D on a standard screen with matching color-filter glasses and can accept reduced color fidelity. Choose side-by-side if your player and display support the file’s stereoscopic layout and you want to keep separate left- and right-eye views. Neither format works independently of the playback chain: the source, player, display, and viewing method all have to fit together.
How the two formats encode 3D
Both formats carry two views intended for the viewer’s left and right eyes. They differ in how those views are combined and how the viewing setup separates them.

Side-by-side: two neighboring image areas
Side-by-side (SBS) places the left- and right-eye views in adjacent regions of one image. A compatible player and display must interpret those regions as a stereo pair and present the right view to each eye. If you open the file in a regular 2D viewer without that handling, you may simply see two images next to each other, often appearing compressed.

The resolution available to each eye depends on the particular encoding and output dimensions; side-by-side does not imply one fixed per-eye resolution. Maxon’s Cinema 4D stereoscopic documentation describes side-by-side as a rendering mode and includes controls for aligning the image halves.
#1 Best Overall
- CHECK THE FORMAT FIRST: These red/cyan anaglyph glasses are made for compatible anaglyph photos, books, prints, DVDs and online videos. They are not for polarized cinema 3D, active-shutter 3D TVs, VR, sunglasses or solar viewing.
- RED LEFT, CYAN RIGHT: The white cardboard frame places the red filter over the wearer’s left eye and cyan over the right, helping separate the two color channels in compatible anaglyph content so the intended depth effect can appear.
- LIGHTWEIGHT FOLD-FLAT FRAME: Cardboard construction keeps each pair light and easy to store. Fold the temples along the scored lines for compatible movie nights, comic books, classroom demonstrations, visual activities and themed events.
- APPROX. 5.7 X 1.5 IN FOLDED: The compact profile fits in a drawer, folder or event supply box without a bulky plastic frame. Handle the filters gently, keep the cardboard dry and store the glasses flat between uses.
- CHOOSE 3, 10 OR 50 PAIRS: Pick 3 for a first anaglyph experience or spares, 10 for family and small groups, or 50 for classrooms, libraries, clubs and events. Each pack size is sold as a separate variation.
Anaglyph: overlapping color-encoded views
Anaglyph superimposes the two views using different color encodings, commonly red-cyan or red-green. Glasses with matching colored filters separate the views so each eye receives its intended image. The International Stereoscopic Union defines anaglyph as “A type of stereogram (either printed, projected or viewed on a TV or computer screen) in which the two images are superimposed but are separated, so each eye sees only the desired image, by the use of coloured filters and viewing spectacles (commonly red and cyan, or red and green).”
Because the views are encoded through color filters, anaglyph can be shown on an ordinary screen, but it cannot preserve color in the same way as distinct full-color eye views. The glasses must match the color scheme used by the content: red-cyan glasses are for red-cyan anaglyph, not side-by-side video.

Side-by-side vs. anaglyph at a glance
| Decision point | Side-by-side | Anaglyph |
|---|---|---|
| How views are encoded | Left- and right-eye views occupy separate neighboring image regions. | The views are superimposed with different color encodings or filters. |
| What you need to view it | A player and display that support the file’s side-by-side layout and route the views for stereoscopic viewing. | Glasses with filters matching the content’s color scheme; an ordinary screen can display the image. |
| Color | Can retain distinct full-color views in the source, subject to the source resolution, display, and playback chain. | Color reproduction is constrained by the filter encoding. |
| Main practical advantage | Suitable when compatible stereoscopic playback is already available and separate eye views are desired. | A straightforward way to view or distribute anaglyph content without a specialized 3D display. |
| Main limitation | Compatibility depends on the specific player, display, and layout. | Color loss and possible ghosting or retinal rivalry; the glasses must match the encoded colors. |
Which format should you choose?
Choose anaglyph for a simple standard-screen setup
If you do not have a confirmed side-by-side-capable playback setup, anaglyph is the simpler option: use a standard screen and matching red-cyan or other appropriate color-filter glasses. It is a compromise, not a way to retain ordinary full color, so it fits best when ease of access matters more than color fidelity.
Choose side-by-side when your playback chain supports it
If your player and display can interpret the exact side-by-side layout, that format is generally the better fit for preserving separate color views. The recommendation is conditional on compatibility; the label “3D” or “SBS” alone does not establish that a particular device will handle a file correctly.

Check the file and device before converting or buying
- Confirm how the source stores its left- and right-eye views; do not assume all side-by-side files use the same dimensions or layout.
- Check that the player supports the source’s stereo method and can send the views correctly to the display.
- For anaglyph, check the encoded color pairing and use glasses with matching filters.
- Test the complete setup before converting a file or purchasing equipment. A generic 3D-capable label does not by itself confirm compatibility with your specific content.
Color, rivalry, and viewing comfort
Anaglyph’s color compromise can also affect how the two eyes’ images compare. Maxon’s Cinema 4D documentation notes that its red-cyan mode can produce retinal rivalry on red surfaces when the image intensity differs between the eyes. Its “Optimized” anaglyph mode is described as improving color reproduction and minimizing this effect relative to the other modes in that software. These are descriptions of Cinema 4D’s modes, not a guarantee about every anaglyph encoder.
Neither format can be promised to feel comfortable for every viewer. A 2016 Annual Reviews article on 3D displays emphasizes that stereoscopic perception depends on compatible capture or image generation, display, and viewing parameters. The available evidence does not establish a head-to-head comfort ranking between side-by-side and anaglyph. Stop viewing if it causes discomfort rather than assuming a different format will necessarily solve the problem.

Where standards fit
SCTE-187-1 is described in the SCTE catalog as defining video-formatting and encoding parameters for high-definition frame-compatible stereoscopic 3D distributed on cable systems. That narrow cable-distribution scope shows that delivery formats can have defined requirements; it is not a general consumer compatibility list and does not make side-by-side the universal 3D standard.
