Where SONiC is deployed
The Foundation’s announcement introduced four case studies spanning cloud computing, high-performance computing, telecommunications and retail payments. The examples illustrate reported uses, but do not by themselves establish how common those deployments are across each industry.
| Deployment | What the announcement reports |
|---|---|
| SAKURA internet’s SAKURAONE | An internet cloud with 800 GPUs; the announcement says it placed 49th in the global TOP500 ranking. |
| Tokyo-1 | A supercomputer deployment; no performance or cost outcome is stated in the announcement. |
| Rakuten | The telecom operator reported over 50% cost savings versus proprietary solutions. |
| Indian national retail-payments operator | The unnamed operator reported a 40% reduction in total cost of ownership. |
The cost figures and TOP500 placement are outcomes reported in the SONiC Foundation’s announcement, not independently established comparisons in the cited material. The announcement does not give the calculation methods or comparison periods for the savings figures.

What SONiC did at the Summit
SONiC’s presence extended beyond case studies. The Foundation said the community held a co-located workshop, presented live demonstrations and ran an extended workshop hosted by Google. The topics included AI and cloud-scale use cases, as well as roadmap discussions.

What the announcements show—and what they do not
The Foundation’s update points to several kinds of momentum at once: a member advancing into a higher tier and governance role, examples of deployments in different sectors, and a substantial Summit program touching on hardware, scale and AI networking. Taken together, these are signals of community activity and industry interest.
They are not a measure of SONiC’s total installed base, market share or adoption growth rate. Nor does the cited material independently verify the case-study savings claims or explain their methods. The strongest grounded conclusion is that SONiC had visible organizational, deployment and event activity at the 2025 Summit, while the announcement’s metrics should be read in their stated context.
