Choose Tracer if you want a close-range, mobility-led duelist who can reposition repeatedly and rewind to an earlier position and health. Sombra is the better match if you’re drawn to information and disruption—but Blizzard’s latest indexed patch notes describe a major shift to Support, so don’t assume she currently plays as a conventional flanker. Check her live kit in-game before deciding.
How Tracer and Sombra differ
Tracer’s documented kit is built around getting into close range, changing position quickly, and surviving with a personal rewind. Sombra has been associated with stealth, scouting, hacking, and disruption, but her kit and role have changed across patches. The latest available Blizzard patch-note result describes her as a Support hero whose Hack ability was removed and replaced by Weaken.

That means “which flanker?” is a useful way to describe the playstyle you want, not a guarantee that both heroes currently fill the same role. Blizzard’s official Sombra hero page still lists Hack and Damage-role framing, which conflicts with the newer patch-note result; confirm her current role and abilities in your game client.

Her movement and reset tools
Tracer’s official hero page lists Pulse Pistols, Blink, Recall, and Pulse Bomb. Blink teleports her in the direction she is moving, while Recall returns her to a previous location and health. Together, these abilities support a rhythm of engaging, repositioning, and deciding when to retreat or reset. Blizzard’s Tracer hero page

The skills her kit asks you to build
Her Pulse Pistols are short-range automatic weapons. That makes tracking aim at close range, movement timing, and knowing when to spend Recall central to getting value from her kit. If you like taking repeated duels and relying on your own movement to survive, Tracer is the clearer fit.
Choose Sombra if you prefer information and disruption
Her role is changing
Sombra’s official hero page lists Machine Pistol, Hack, Translocator, Virus, and EMP, and describes Hack as disabling enemy abilities. However, that page conflicts with a newer indexed Blizzard patch-note result: the newer result says Sombra moved from Damage to Support, Hack was removed, and Weaken halves an enemy’s damage and healing output. Treat the patch-note result as the freshest available account, not a guarantee of what is currently live in every client or region. Blizzard’s Sombra hero page · Blizzard patch notes

What that means for your playstyle
If you enjoy information-led disruption and helping your team through utility, Sombra may appeal to you. But don’t pick her expecting a fixed stealth-and-hack flanker loop: her role expression has shifted, and precise current ability details require checking the live client.
Compare the fit at a glance
| Playstyle question | Tracer | Sombra |
|---|---|---|
| What kind of engagement do I want? | Repeated close-range engagements, with Blink for repositioning and Recall as a reset. | Historically, scouting and disruption; the latest indexed patch notes describe Support utility through Weaken. Verify the live kit. |
| What movement or escape tools define the kit? | Blink moves in the direction of travel; Recall returns Tracer to a previous location and health. | Translocator and Stealth have changed across patches; check the client for current details. |
| What skills should I enjoy practicing? | Short-range tracking aim, movement timing, and deciding when to use Recall. | Information and timing around disruption or team utility; exact current abilities depend on the live kit. |
| Who is the clearer match? | Players who want to get close, take duels, and use movement and rewind to stay alive. | Players attracted to information and disruption, and to the Support-oriented utility described in the latest indexed notes. |
How to make the choice in-game
- Check Sombra’s current role and abilities in the client. Her official hero page and newer patch-note result conflict, and her kit has changed over time.
- Try Tracer if you want close-range action. Focus on aiming with Pulse Pistols, using Blink to reposition, and judging when Recall is worth spending.
- Try Sombra if utility is what attracts you. Evaluate her using the abilities and role actually shown in your current client, rather than relying on older guides.
- Choose based on the decisions you enjoy making. Tracer’s published kit points toward personal mobility and duels; Sombra’s recent reported redesign points toward team utility. Neither choice is established as universally superior.
Why pick rate won’t settle it
Blizzard defines pick rate as a hero’s share of total playtime. The statistics page also notes that its data reflect the start of the latest patch and may take time to update. Those numbers describe play patterns, not whether a hero suits your preferences. Blizzard hero statistics

Bottom line
Tracer is the more straightforward recommendation for a mobility-focused flanker who wants close-range duels and a personal rewind. Sombra fits better if you’re interested in disruption and team utility, but her recent reported move to Support makes checking the live client essential before treating her as a flanker.
