State of Decay 2: keep a community going
State of Decay 2 puts community decisions at the center of survival. You scavenge supplies, maintain shelters, manage survivors, and deal with relationships between your group and neighboring communities. Its loop gives you concrete responsibilities and goals: keep people alive and make the settlement work. Undead Labs’ official overview describes survival as shaped by those community choices.

DayZ: survive what the world throws at you
DayZ is a gritty open-world survival game with horror and MMO elements. Its official FAQ emphasizes limited in-game guidance, high consequences for failure, and emergent play in a post-apocalyptic landscape. You must navigate environmental dangers and decide how to respond to other players, who may help you or attack you. State of Decay 2: cooperative play with a host
State of Decay 2 supports solo play or four-player co-op: you can play with up to three other people. Its additional modes make the group play more structured. Heartland is a story-oriented return to Trumbull Valley, while Daybreak has up to four players defend against waves of undead. The Xbox listing describes the edition’s included Heartland, Daybreak, and Independence add-ons.

For cross-play, the official support FAQ says players can connect across platforms and storefronts using Xbox accounts. Multiplayer is peer-to-peer, so the host’s connection matters; guests are tethered and must stay near the host. Steam also lists online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, and says a free Xbox Live account is required for its version (Steam listing).
DayZ: encounters are part of the uncertainty
DayZ’s open-world design leaves more room for encounters to define a session. The official FAQ lists PC, Xbox, and PlayStation availability and says official modding is supported on PC. Its 2018 FAQ describes separate PC and console server pools and says cross-platform play was unlikely. Because that information is old, do not assume a particular pair of platforms can play together; check current platform and server compatibility before buying.

Which one is more structured?
State of Decay 2 is the more goal-oriented choice: its community, supply-gathering, and base responsibilities give a session a clear shape, and Heartland and Daybreak offer distinct modes. DayZ is the more open-ended choice. Its sparse guidance and unpredictable player encounters put more weight on your decisions in the moment, rather than on maintaining a roster and settlement.

- State of Decay 2: Steam lists a free Xbox Live account as a requirement for its version. Confirm the requirements for the storefront and platform you plan to use.
- DayZ: The official FAQ identifies PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, and official mod support on PC. It does not establish that all platform pairs can share servers today, so verify the exact combination you and your friends use.
- DayZ content: Bohemia Interactive’s Update 1.25 announcement, dated May 27, 2024, says Livonia became included with the base game from that point forward. Store packaging and prices can vary by region and change over time; check the current listing for your platform.
