The exact paper, its acceptor, measurements and device results cannot be identified from the available bibliographic record. What can be explained is the photophysical problem behind the claim and what evidence would be needed to establish it.
What happens between absorbing light and producing current?
In an organic solar cell, absorbed light creates an excited state, often called a local exciton: the electron and the positively charged hole remain associated on a molecule or molecular region. At a donor–acceptor interface, that excitation may form an interfacial charge-transfer (CT) state, in which the electron and hole occupy different materials but are still attracted to one another. Further separation is needed to produce charges that can travel through the device and be collected as photocurrent.

These are distinct events. Seeing emission from an excited state does not, by itself, show that free charges form efficiently. A radiative transition releases energy as a photon; charge transfer and separation instead move the system toward current. Whether emission is useful or competes with current generation depends on which states are involved, their energies, and the rates of the competing processes.

What does “thermally accessible” mean?
In this context, “thermally accessible” means that thermal energy may help a system reach a state or pathway that is not energetically available from the starting state alone. The title does not identify the particular states, energy difference, activation process or rate being described. It therefore cannot establish whether thermal motion enables emission from a CT state, repopulates a local exciton, or affects another step.

That distinction matters because the title joins two ideas—solid-state emission and thermal access—without specifying their connection. A paper would need to identify the emitting state and show how temperature changes the relevant pathway before the proposed mechanism could be assessed.
Why emission does not automatically mean better charge generation
An excited state that emits before charge transfer can no longer contribute that excitation to charge generation. In a low-offset blend, insufficient energetic driving force for transfer may leave excitons more likely to decay before charges separate. The balance between emission, other excited-state decay, charge transfer and charge separation—not emission alone—determines whether a radiative pathway helps explain device performance.

In a 2026 Advanced Materials perspective, Dieter Neher and Manasi Pranav conclude that the offset between the local exciton and interfacial CT state should be at least 100 meV, corresponding in their discussion to an approximately 300 meV frontier-orbital offset, for photocurrent generation in the low-offset blends they analyze. Those are the perspective authors’ conclusions, not measurements or results attributable to the unidentified work named in this title. Read the perspective.
