Haunted Chocolatier, the in-development game from Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone, puts a chocolate shop—not a farm—at the center of play. Barone describes it as “more of an action-RPG compared to Stardew Valley,” with combat receiving more emphasis alongside ingredient gathering, chocolate-making and shopkeeping. It remains in development, with no release date announced.
What kind of game is Haunted Chocolatier?
The official description places Haunted Chocolatier in the RPG/simulation category, while Barone says its direction is more action-RPG than Stardew Valley. The player lives in a haunted castle, gathers rare ingredients, makes chocolate and sells it through a shop. That makes the business of producing and selling chocolate the central loop, rather than tending a farm.

Barone has also described combat as a bigger focus than in Stardew Valley. The game is expected to include different ways to make chocolate, as well as getting to know townspeople and making progress through multiple activities. These are announced design directions, not a guarantee that every detail will remain unchanged.
How is it different from Stardew Valley?
| What to compare | Haunted Chocolatier | Stardew Valley |
|---|---|---|
| Main activity | Gather ingredients, make chocolate and run a shop. | Farm-centered play. |
| Combat | Barone has said combat will have greater emphasis. | Combat is less central by comparison, according to Barone’s description of the new game. |
| Town life and progression | Includes some familiar town-game elements, such as meeting townspeople and progressing in different ways. | Provides the point of comparison for those shared social and progression elements. |
The comparison describes the developer’s announced direction, not a complete or final feature list. Barone says the games are separate projects: Haunted Chocolatier is being written from scratch on a different engine, rather than added to Stardew Valley.
