A solar string showing 0 volts is a fault symptom, not proof that one panel has failed. Weather, shading, wiring, protective devices, polarity, and—in some systems—rapid-shutdown equipment can all produce zero or low readings. Check the system display and safe, accessible indicators first; leave live PV measurements and conductor work to a qualified solar technician.
What a 0-volt string reading does—and does not—tell you
A string is a group of solar modules connected together. A system may report zero current, zero string voltage, low voltage, or voltage too low for the inverter or charge controller to start. These are different conditions and can have different causes. A displayed 0 V does not by itself establish that a module is defective.

For example, Tesla’s Powerwall 3 troubleshooting documentation describes the symptom as “One string has a DC input of 0V despite having a string of panels connected.” Its diagnostic steps are specific to Powerwall 3 and its equipment architecture; they should not be assumed to apply to a different inverter or off-grid system. Confirm the exact symptom and conditions
- Note whether the display reports 0 V, 0 A, a fault code, or simply no charging or production. Record which string or input is affected and whether other strings are producing.
- Check the time of day and current conditions. Night, heavy cloud, shade, or dirty modules can reduce output. Victron lists irradiance, weather, shading, and dirt among possible causes of low or zero PV readings.
- Consult the documentation for the exact inverter or charge controller and compare its display with the system’s normal operating behavior. Startup and operating thresholds are product-specific.
Look only at accessible indicators
Without opening equipment or touching PV wiring, check whether the system display reports a fault and whether any safely accessible breaker or fuse indicator shows a trip or fault. Do not remove covers, pull fuses, or reset a protective device repeatedly to see whether production returns. A tripped breaker or blown fuse may indicate a fault that needs diagnosis.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

Why one string can read zero
Possible causes include low sunlight, shading or dirt, a damaged module, wiring damage or a disconnected connection, a blown fuse, an open or faulty breaker, a combiner-box problem, reversed PV polarity, or too few modules in series for the equipment to operate. Victron’s troubleshooting guidance lists these as possible causes; they are alternatives to investigate, not proof that any one cause applies to a particular installation. Equipment architecture can add another explanation. In its Powerwall 3 procedure, Tesla says a string can show 0 V when micro-controllers (MCIs) are detected in one string but not all. That finding concerns the specified Powerwall 3 setup, not every solar array. Tesla Powerwall 3 troubleshooting

When measurements are necessary, use the right procedure and expertise
Diagnosing a string may require measuring its open-circuit voltage (Voc), checking polarity, or testing wiring and equipment. The expected result depends on the system design and the manufacturer’s procedure. In Tesla’s specified string-test context, a voltage lower than expected can indicate a wiring error, while a higher-than-expected voltage can indicate an open circuit. These interpretations are not universal rules for other equipment. Tesla MCI and PV string troubleshooting

These are not casual DIY tests. Victron warns that PV cabling in the cited Inverter RS Smart Solar guidance can reach 450 V DC and describes voltages above 50 V as generally dangerous. It also warns that a very high voltage may be present on PV cabling even when the array is disconnected or switched off. Tesla instructs installers working on Powerwall 3 to disable the unit and confirm the absence of voltage at AC and PV terminals before modifying conductors. Follow the exact equipment maker’s current safety procedure; if live measurements or conductor work are involved, use a qualified solar technician. Owning a multimeter with DC-voltage or diode-test capability does not make energized PV work safe. Manufacturer procedures that call for these tools are intended to be followed with the appropriate training, isolation steps, and equipment-specific precautions. Victron’s SmartSolar manual also gives product-family-specific charging criteria: charging starts when PV voltage is 5 V above battery voltage and continues if PV remains 1 V above battery voltage. Those figures apply to the cited SmartSolar models, not as universal thresholds for diagnosing a string. Victron SmartSolar troubleshooting
What a qualified technician may check
After identifying the equipment and design, a qualified technician can compare measured string voltage and polarity with the expected values, then follow the inverter, controller, or module-level device manufacturer’s diagnostic sequence. For a Powerwall 3, Tesla’s procedure includes checking that the string is connected, confirming MCIs are present as expected, checking the MPPT diode-test range, and then checking polarity and true string Voc. Its stated 0.3–0.55 V MPPT diode-test range applies only to that Powerwall 3 test. Tesla’s separate MCI/PV-string reference gives a 0.25–0.5 V diode-test range for its specified MCI procedure. Do not apply either range to unrelated equipment. Powerwall 3 procedure MCI and PV string procedure

If the installation uses Tigo TS4-F or TS4-2F devices, Tigo’s guidance describes a 0.6 V safety voltage per unit while rapid shutdown is activated. That is specific to those devices and that shutdown state, not a general safe-voltage limit for solar strings. Tigo TS4-F/TS4-2F troubleshooting

- The system requires measurements on energized PV conductors, or you are unsure how to isolate the equipment and verify it is de-energized.
- A string remains at zero after ordinary conditions and accessible indicators have been checked.
- There may be damaged conductors, a ground fault, water intrusion, equipment damage, or a fault inside the inverter, controller, combiner, or module-level electronics.
- A breaker trips again or a fuse appears to have failed. Do not keep resetting or replacing protective devices without finding the cause.
Ask the technician to identify the fault location and confirm the replacement or repair is compatible with the array design and equipment requirements. The symptom alone does not establish that a panel needs replacement.
