Dual-ported RAM is memory with two access ports connected to the same memory array, so two agents or logic paths can access the shared memory concurrently. The term does not, by itself, tell you whether both ports can write: simple dual-port RAM commonly separates reading and writing, while true dual-port RAM gives each port read and write capability.
What does “dual-ported RAM” mean?
RAM means random-access memory: data can be accessed by address rather than only in sequence. In dual-ported RAM, the same memory array is exposed through two access interfaces, or ports. Each port provides a way to address the memory and perform the operations supported by that configuration.

The two ports can serve separate logic paths or agents, enabling overlapping access to one shared memory space. “Concurrent” describes access through both interfaces during overlapping operation; it does not guarantee that every combination of simultaneous operations is supported or produces a predictable result.

Simple dual-port versus true dual-port RAM
Documentation uses these labels for different port capabilities. Intel’s version 24.3 parameterizable macro documentation distinguishes simple dual-port RAM, with dedicated read and write ports, from true dual-port RAM, where both ports can read or write.

What can happen when both ports access memory at once?
Two ports allow concurrent access, but the outcome depends on the addresses, operations, clocking, and specific memory primitive. In particular, do not assume that simultaneous writes to the same address are safe. Altera’s Quartus Prime Pro Edition User Guide version 25.1 states that simultaneous writes to the same location on both ports result in indeterminate behavior for the documented true dual-port synchronous RAM.

Other same-address read/write cases—often called read-during-write behavior—also vary. A design must use the rules for its selected device and configuration, rather than treating one vendor’s documented result as universal. Intel’s embedded-peripheral documentation, for example, describes undefined results for simultaneous same-address access in the configuration covered by that page.
How FPGA implementations use dual-port RAM
In an FPGA, dual-port RAM describes the access arrangement, not one required physical memory structure. AMD’s Vitis Model Composer User Guide, version 2022.2, describes two independent sets of ports for simultaneous reading and writing and notes that the RAM block can be implemented with distributed memory, block RAM, or UltraRAM resources where supported. The available resources depend on the FPGA and design tools.

Before relying on a particular behavior, check the target device’s memory documentation for the permitted port operations, clocking options, and read-during-write and same-address collision rules. AMD’s Vitis Model Composer Dual Port RAM documentation, Intel’s embedded-peripheral memory type guidance (page dated 2023-08-15), and Altera’s true dual-port synchronous RAM guidance provide device- or tool-specific details.
